Trailer with several independent axles, provided with a steering device comprising a drawbar and intended to be attached to a road vehicle The object of the present invention is a trailer with several independent axles, provided with a steering device comprising a drawbar and intended to be attached to a road vehicle.
In known trailers of the type mentioned, the steering device often comprises a pivoting neck integral with the front axle and the drawbar. In this case., The wheels of the front axle are mounted either on journals, or at both ends of a single axle, these journals or this axle being integral with said axle.
In other cases, the drawbar is integral with the frame and the wheels of one of the axles are mounted on steerable spindles capable of pivoting freely about vertical axes fixed relative to the frame.
These vertical axes are located in front of the axes of the corresponding wheels and the spindles are connected to each other by a floating cross member, so that the wheels of this axle are kept in alignment with the trailer, their axes remaining parallel to each other. the other. When the towing vehicle imparts to the trailer only a rotating movement, the lateral force exerted on the drawbar causes the two free rockets to pivot at the same angle relative to the chassis,
which allows the trailer to follow the towing vehicle. In these trailers, the steering device then consists of the drawbar and the chassis of the trailer.
Finally, in certain two-axle trailers, of the type mentioned, the drawbar is articulated on the frame and the front axle comprises steerable knuckles, also capable of pivoting with respect to the frame, the axes of the wheels mounted on these knuckles remaining parallel between them.
In this case, the steering knuckles are connected to the drawbar by a linkage system which keeps them constantly in an orientation such that the axles of the front wheels remain perpendicular to the drawbar. The steering device then consists of the drawbar and the wheelhouse.
It is known that known trailers of the type mentioned above have the great drawback of not being able to be driven in reverse by the towing vehicle with great difficulty. Indeed, whatever the type of the steering device with which these trailers are provided, the wheels of at least one of the axles are, when the trailer is driven in reverse,
in unstable equilibrium with respect to the wheels of the other axle (s). An irregularity of the ground, for example, is enough to make them take a different orientation from the one they should have and to make the trailer deviate from the path it should follow, without it being possible, by maneuvering the driving vehicle. , to correct these deviations.
Attempts have already been made to remedy this drawback to some extent. Thus, for example, on certain trailers comprising an axle whose wheels are mounted on normally free steerable rockets, it has been proposed to mount a positive device making it possible to block these rockets or to limit their pivoting possibilities.
However, in doing so, we also limit them. possibilities of maneuvering the trailer, which hardly facilitates its driving in reverse.
In trailers whose steering device is constituted by a linkage and a drawbar articulated on the chassis, it has also been proposed to block the drawbar in a position parallel to the axis of the trailer, and to release the knuckles from the axle. forward, normally driven by the wheelhouse. In this way, this prevents the drawbar from stepping abruptly, with the risk of causing the trailer to overturn.
However, as the knuckles of the front axle are then released and they can pivot around vertical axes which are located in front of the axes of the corresponding wheels, the latter are still in an unstable equilibrium, in reverse, so that the mentioned disadvantage is not. deleted.
The object of the present invention is to completely eliminate this drawback, by creating a trailer with several axles of the type mentioned, which, put in the reverse position and driven in this direction of travel by the towing vehicle, can roll at a low speed. absolutely stable while remaining easy to handle,
and be guided very easily both in a straight line and in a curve of any radius.
For this, in the trailer according to the invention, each wheel of one of the axles is mounted on a part of the latter capable of pivoting freely about a vertical axis located behind the axis of the wheel,
these parts being interconnected so that the axes of the wheels which they carry remain parallel and can be blocked in a determined orientation with respect to said steering device, when the trailer is driven in forward gear, and released, when the trailer is driven in reverse.
Two embodiments of the trailer forming the subject of the invention are shown, by way of example, in the appended drawing of which FIG. 1a is a plan view, in reverse position of the first embodiment.

The trailer shown in Figs. la and lb are two independent axles. It comprises a frame 1 and a drawbar 2 fixed, by hinges 3 of horizontal axis, to a frame 11 carried by the front axle of the trailer. This front axle comprises (fig. 2 and 3) a fixed cross member 4 at both ends of which vertical pivots 5 are mounted.
A pair of front wheels 6, each pivoted on a part having a horizontal axis forming the axis of rotation of said wheel and consisting of a steerable spindle 7, support the front axle. Each of these rockets 7 is subject to one of the pivots 5 so as to be able to turn around this pivot on either side of a central position. The axle is arranged so that, whatever the angular position of the rockets. 7, the axis of each of them is in front of the axis of the pivot 5, around which it can rotate.
A transverse bar 8, articulated at each of its ends on one of the rockets 7 connects the latter to one another, so that the axes of the front wheels are kept parallel to each other. When they are in the middle position, the axes of the rockets 7 are perpendicular to the axis of the drawbar and they are aligned with one another.
The cross member 4 carries elliptical suspension springs 10, on which the frame 11 is fixed. The latter is integral with a pivot ring 12 which is pivoted under a table 13 fixed to the chassis 1 of the trailer. Rollers (not shown) housed between the ring 12 and the table 13 ensure the pivoting of the ring 12 relative to the frame 1.
As for the rear axle, it comprises a fixed axle 14 at each end of which a wheel 15 is mounted.
A locking mechanism makes it possible to alternately block, on the one hand, the rockets 7 relative to the cross member 4 and to the frame 11 in a median orientation where their axes are perpendicular to the drawbar 2, the pivot ring 12 then being free to pivot relative to the table 13, and, on the other hand, this pivot ring relative to the table 13 and to the frame 1 in a position such that the drawbar 2 is located in the axis of the frame 1,
the rockets 7 then being able to pivot freely around the pivots 5.
This mechanism comprises two cylinders 9 (fig. 3 and 4) each rigidly mounted on an arm 16 of the cross member 4, which extends behind one of the pivots 5. Immediately below each of the arms 16 s' extends another arm 17, integral with one of the rockets 7.
These arms 17 have a frustoconical opening 18 with a vertical axis. A cylindrical rod 19, the frustoconical lower end of which is fitted to the opening 18, carries at its upper end a piston 20 which can slide in the cylinder 9. This rod 19 is further guided so as to move along a strictly vertical axis.
Its free lower end can move downwards, so as to engage in the opening 18 to block the arm 17 and consequently the rockets 7 relative to the cross member 4. A spring 21, placed inside of cylinder 9, acts on the upper face of piston 20 and pushes it downwards, so that said locking mechanism is normally kept in the locked position.
To release it, it suffices to bring compressed air through a pipe 22, leading to the lower part of the cylinder 9. If we cut this compressed air supply, the spring 21, by acting on the upper face of the piston. 20, brings the rod 19 into the locking position provided that the opening 18 is located in the axis of the rod 19.
To block the pivot ring 12, the locking mechanism further comprises a cylinder 23 similar to cylinder 9 (fig. La and lb). This cylinder 23 is rigidly fixed to a lug 35 of the table 13. Another arm 36, provided with a frustoconical opening 37 of vertical axis (FIG. 6) is integral with the crown 12 and extends immediately below. cylinder 23.
However, in a variant, the arm 36 could also be fixed to the table 13 or to the frame 1, the cylinder 23 then being mounted on the frame 11. A rod 38 is secured to a piston 39 capable of sliding in the cylinder 23. .
When the crown 12 and the frame 11 are oriented such that the drawbar 2 is in the axis of the frame 1, the rod 38 can engage in the opening 37 against the action of a spring 40 which normally maintains the rod 38 out of the opening 37, the pivot ring 12 being released. To block it, it is necessary to bring compressed air into the upper part of the cylinder 23 through a pipe 41. The air pressure, exerted on the piston 39, then engages the rod 38 in the opening 37 by compressing the res comes out 40.
The front axle also carries a rocket straightening mechanism 7 which is formed by two groups of maneuvering members (fig. 2 and 3). Each of these groups comprises a cylinder 25 and a piston 26. The cylinders 25 are fixed horizontally and back to back under the cross member 4, so that the pistons 26 are directed outwards. One end of each piston 26 is fixed to a support 27 integral with the transverse bar 8. Two pipes 28 (FIG. 5), each leading to one of the cylinders 25, allow them to be supplied with compressed air.
One of the groups of maneuvers 25-2î serves to rotate the rockets 7 in one direction, the other to rotate them in the other direction.
Finally, a housing 29, fixed to the cross member 4, contains elements of a control device which comprises an arm 30 movable in rotation about a horizontal axis, on either side of a central position. This arm 30 is slaved to the bar 8 by a rigid rod 31 articulated at its ends, on the one hand, to the arm 30, and, on the other hand, to an arm 32 rigidly fixed to the bar 8. Any movement of the bar. bar 8, and consequently rockets 7, in one direction or the other, from said median position, thus causes a rotation of the arm 30 around its axis in one direction or the other from its middle position.
The control device of the trailer, of which the members 29-32 form part, has the function of actuating at will, on the one hand, the maneuvering members 25-27, and, on the other hand, the rusting worm mechanism 9, 16-21 and 35-40. For this, this device comprises an electric switch 42 (fig. 5) with two positions, connected to the positive pole of a direct current source 43. In one position, the switch 42 puts said positive pole in contact with an element 44. and in the other with an element 45.
The control device further comprises two bipolar electrical contactors housed in the housing 29. These contactors each consist of two parallel flexible blades 46 and 47. Each of them carries a contact element at one of its ends and it is rigidly fixed by its other end to the housing 29. Normally, these contactors are open, that is to say that the contact elements of the blades 46 and 47 are remote from one another.
Two cams 48 integral with the arm 30 are arranged in the housing 29 such that when the arm 30 is in its middle position, each of them is located near one of the blades 47. When the arm 30 moves in one way, one of the cams 48 comes into contact with one of the blades 47 and closes the corresponding contactor. The other cam 48 closes the other contactor when the arm 30 moves away from its middle position in the other direction.
The blades 46 of each of the contactors (46, 47) are connected to the element 44 of the switch 42. As for the element 45 of the latter, it is connected to one of the poles of an electromagnetic valve 49, l 'other pole of this tap being grounded like the negative pole of the source 43. The contactors (46, 47) each control a tap 50, the taps 50 being identical to the tap 49. These three taps lead to a pipe 51 from a compressed air tank 52.
On the other hand, each <B> d </B> e these taps 49, 50 is connected to an outlet pipe. Thus, the pipes 28 constitute the outgoing pipes of the taps 50 and that a pipe 24 constitutes the outgoing piping of the valve 49. The latter ends in a three-way tap 33.
Normally, the valve 33 puts the pipe 24 in communication with the pipes 22 and 41 supplying the cylinders 9 and 23 respectively. If it is rotated in the direction of arrow a (fig. 6), the pipes 41 and 22 are directly connected to the reservoir 52 by a pipe 34. Thus this valve 33 allows, if necessary, to actuate the locking mechanism 9, 16-21 and 35-40 by hand.
However, as a variant, the pipe 24 can also be permanently connected to the pipes 22 and 41, the valve 33 and the pipe 34 then being removed.
When the taps 49, 50 are closed, the end of each of said outlet pipes ends in the corresponding tap, at an exhaust port in the open air. On the other hand, when they are actuated by the closing of the contactor which controls them, said valves open and then connect the corresponding outgoing piping to the reservoir 52.
When the trailer described is in the forward position (fig. Lb), the knuckles 7 of the front axle are maintained. in their middle position by the rods 19, which are then engaged in the openings 18 under the action of the springs 21. The cams 48 are then also maintained in their middle position and none of the contactors (46, 47) can close. The taps 50 therefore remain closed. On the other hand, the crown 12 is free to pivot relative to the table 13, because the spring 40 maintains the rod 38 outside the opening 37.
The trailer can thus perform rotating movements. To maintain it in this state, it suffices to leave the switch 42 in contact with the element 44.
To put the trailer described in a state to be driven in reverse (fig. La), it suffices to place the switch 42 on the element 45, the drawbar being brought beforehand into alignment with the chassis. The valve 49 opens, so that the air pressure reaches under the piston <B> 20 '</B> and on the piston 39. The pivot ring 12 locks while the rockets 7 are released.
To put the trailer again in a condition to be pulled in forward gear, it suffices to return the switch 42 to the contact element 44. The valve 49 closes and discharges the air from the cylinders 9 and 23. Left to the influence of the spring 40, the rod 38 then unlocks the crown 12, while the rod 19 moves in the direction of the arm 17 under the action of the spring 21.
If the rockets 7 are in a position away from the middle position, the rods 19 cannot enter the openings 18, but one of the cams 48 then closes one of the contactors (46, 47) which, connected at the current source 43, actuates one of the taps 50. One of the cylinders 25 is consequently pressurized and its piston 26 causes the rockets 7 to pivot so as to bring them to their middle position. As soon as this position is reached, the rods 19 can engage in the openings 18 and lock the front wheels in the position shown in the drawing.
On the other hand, the two contacts (46, 47) are then open and the taps 50 are closed.
An additional switch 53 is interposed between the current source 43 and the tap 49, in parallel with the switch 42. This switch makes it possible to keep the tap 49 open while the switch 42 is on the contact 44. Thus the rectifying mechanism 25 -27 can operate while the rod 19 is held out of the opening 18. However, care must be taken to open this switch again when the rockets have been brought to their middle position. To facilitate this check, two indicator lights 54 are connected in parallel with the taps 50.
Each lamp 54 lights up when the corresponding contact (46, 47) is closed. The extinction of the two lamps indicates that the rockets are in their middle orientation and that we can open the switch 53.
In the forward position, the rockets 7 are blocked by the rods 19. They are kept coaxial and fixed relative to the cross member 4. On the other hand, the ring 12 is movable relative to the table 13, so that the trailer can be guided by means of the drawbar 2 exactly like a conventional trailer with slewing ring. When the rod 38 blocks the crown 12 and the drawbar 2 in a position parallel to the axis of the chassis, the rockets 7 are then free to move around the pivots 5 and driving of the trailer in reverse is possible.
Indeed, the wheels 6 can be oriented to one side or the other of their median position according to the lateral movements of the drawbar 2. Thanks to the particular position of the pivots 5 relative to the axes of the wheels 6, the latter are , when reversing, constantly brought back in the direction of travel and thus stabilize the trailer throughout the period of reverse.
The control device described makes it possible to put the trailer automatically in the reverse gear position or in the forward gear position, by simple operation of the switch 42. This switch 42 can be advantageously placed in the towing vehicle, for example on the dashboard. It is then connected to the control device by a cable passing from said vehicle to the trailer. The same is true of indicator lamps 54 which can be placed on either side of switch 42 on the instrument panel.
Said switch can even be easily coordinated with the gearshift lever of said towing vehicle, so that no special maneuver is required to shift from the forward position to the reverse position.
However, the passage from the reverse gear position to the forward gear position, instead of taking place in a fully automatic way thanks to the action of the operating members 25-27, could also be done without the assistance of these bodies.
Thus, in a variant, the members 25-27 as well as the control and slaving members 50, 29-31 and 46-48 can be omitted. In order to be able to pass in this case from the reverse gear position to the forward gear position, it is first of all necessary to maneuver the trailer in such a way that the axes of the wheels 6 are perpendicular to the axis of the trailer, so that the rods 19 can engage in the openings 18 under the effect of the springs 21, the intake of compressed air into the cylinders 9 being cut off.
In the second embodiment (fig. 7 and 8), wheels 61 forming the front wheels of this trailer which, instead of being mounted on steerable rockets, are each mounted on an axle part constituted by one end of a cross member 62.
The trailer of fig. 7 and 8 comprises a frame 55 and a steering mechanism which is constituted by a drawbar 56, articulated by horizontal hinges 57 on a frame 58, the latter carrying a pivot ring 59 on which rests a table 60 integral with the frame 55 .
The cross member 62 is connected by elliptical springs (63) to a lower frame 64 which is located under the frame 58 and which carries it. The two frames 64 and 58 are connected to each other by a vertical pivot 65 located behind the axis of the cross member 62. In addition, a slide 66 consisting of an arched U-iron is attached. at the front of the frame 58 and a slide 67 of corresponding shape, integral with the frame 64 is engaged in the slide 66.
Thus the entire front axle, constituted by the wheels 61, the cross member 62 and the frame 64 can rotate around the vertical pivot 65 relative to the steering mechanism (56, 58, 59), the slide 67 then sliding in the slide 66 and thus allowing this axle to arrive in the position shown in phantom in FIG. 8. The front axle supports part of the weight of the trailer via, on the one hand, a projection or a wedge 73 placed between the frames 64 and 58 and surrounding the pivot 65, and, d 'on the other hand, of the slide 66 pressing on the slide 67.
The trailer according to this second embodiment is also equipped with a locking mechanism. This locking mechanism comprises a cylinder 68 identical to the cylinder 23 of the first embodiment and a locking rod 69 identical to the rod 38 of this first embodiment. It also comprises a second cylinder 71 identical to one of the cylinders 9, of the first embodiment, and a second locking rod 72 identical to the rods 19 of the first embodiment.
It makes it possible to alternately block the steering mechanism (56, 58, 59) relative to the chassis 55 or the frame 64 relative to this steering mechanism.
The two cylinders 68 and 71 are fixed, the first, to the table 60, and the second to the frame 64. When the drawbar 56 and the wheels 61 are oriented so that the trailer moves in a straight line, along the longitudinal axis of its frame 55, the rods 69 and 72 are coaxial and located one above the other. They can then each engage in one of the ends of an opening 70 made in the frame 58.
The rod 69 thus makes it possible to block the steering mechanism relative to the frame 55 in an orientation such that the drawbar 56 is in the axis of the frame 55, while the rod 72 makes it possible to block the front axle relative to the steering mechanism in an orientation such that the cross member 62 always remains perpendicular to the drawbar 56.
The rods 69 and 72 are subjected to the action of springs (not shown) housed respectively in the cylinders 68 and 71 and which tend to maintain the first, the rod 69 out of the opening 70 and, the second, the rod 71 engaged in this opening.
A control mechanism similar to that which has been described as a variant of the first embodiment makes it possible to actuate the described locking mechanism to move the rods 69 and 72 at will against the action of these springs.
In the forward gear position, this control device is disabled. The slewing ring 59 is therefore released, while the frame 64 is locked relative to the frame 58. The trailer can then be driven in this direction exactly like a conventional slewing ring trailer. On the other hand, in the reverse position, the rods 6 <B> 9 </B> and 72 are actuated by the control device of the locking mechanism and the pivot ring 59 is blocked, while the front axle can be locked. pivot freely around pivot 65.
As the latter is located behind the axis of the cross member 62, the trailer can then be guided in reverse very easily. When the frame 64 pivots around the pivot 65, the slide 67 slides in the slide 66.
