Process for the preparation of oxidized azo compounds
The present invention relates to a process for preparing new compounds which are optical brighteners.
Optical brighteners have found extensive use in recent years in the treatment of textile materials, especially when washing the same, and are intended to cancel out the yellow or gray color which white textile materials, especially cellulose materials, can have, especially after repeated washing.
Such optical brighteners also improve dyed textiles because they give the same gloss.
They can also be used to give other cellulosic materials, especially paper, a distinctly white appearance.
Optical brighteners usually absorb light in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum and emit light in the visible part of the spectrum, usually cyan to blue-violet.
Therefore, the fluorescence of these compounds counteracts yellowing in white materials, as is the case e.g. B. occurs with repeated washing of white cotton or linen fabrics. The compounds used as optical brighteners have to attach substantively to the fibers of the treated material and be practically stable when they are colored onto the material to be treated.
In general, best results are obtained with optical brighteners that have a fluorescent color that is complementary to that of the aged fiber, so that the colors cancel each other out.
Since the most common discoloration of textiles from aging or repeated washing is yellow, the most suitable optical brightener is one that fluoresces blue.
It is important that the optical brightener is not destroyed or removed by bleaching agents, i.e. it must be bleach-resistant. The fluorescent optical brighteners are generally incorporated into soaps and synthetic detergents which are then marketed for household use.
The articles washed with it are often subjected to bleaching with various bleaching agents, e.g. B. Na trium hypochlorite, subjected. It is therefore desirable that the optical brighteners already on the fiber or in the washing solution are attacked as little as possible by any bleaching agent that is present.
It has been found that certain new compounds of the formula

The nomenclature for the compounds mentioned above is based on the following numbering:
EMI2.3
The compounds prepared by the process according to the invention are substantive for cellulose materials and show a blue fluorescence, which gives the material to be treated a particularly pleasing tint; ht.
They are practically bleach-proof and have good "enrichment" properties, as the whiteness of the tissue to be treated increases continuously to a maximum due to the well-balanced substantivity after repeated treatments in a bath of the same concentration, which is generally not an unpleasant visible color or tint, as often happens otherwise.
The compounds mentioned can advantageously be incorporated into preparations commonly used for the treatment of textiles, e.g. B.
Detergents and soaps in solid or liquid form.
They can also be added to baths for treating cellulose loose materials during their manufacture and for treating finished textile articles. Furthermore, the new compounds can also be added to preparations for treating paper and photographic paper where high whiteness is necessary.
Mild oxidizing agents are preferably used to carry out the oxidation of the o-aminoazo dye. Suitable oxidizing agents are, for example, alkali metal hypochlorites, e.g. B. sodium hypochlorite, tetrammine copperII sulfate, copper sulfate in the form of a soluble complex with pyridine, thio nyl chloride and sulfuryl chloride.
The above-mentioned o-amino dyes can be prepared in any convenient manner, e.g. B. by diazotization of a compound of the formula
EMI3.1
wherein X and n have the aben mentioned meaning, and coupling of the diazotized compound with 5 amino-pyrazole or a substituted derivative thereof, for. B. 1-Phenyl-3-methyl-5-aminopyrazole.
If desired, the intermediate, the diazo compound, can be separated off before the coupling.
The parts mentioned in the following examples are parts by weight.

The diazo compound is separated off, suspended in aqueous pyridine and for the purpose of coupling the components with a solution of
8, 65 parts of l-phenyl-3-methyl-5-aminopyrazole mixed in aqueous acetic acid. The acid content of the mixture is kept constant by adding sodium acetate during the coupling.
After the coupling has ended, the o-aminoazo dye obtained is salted out and filtered off at 25-30 ° C., dissolved in aqueous alcohol and sodium hydroxide and oxidized at 70-75 ° C. by adding an excess of sodium hypochlorite solution dropwise.
After the end of the oxidation, which can be seen from the change in color from red to orange, the 2-stilbyl- (1-phenyl-3-methyl) -pyrazolyltriazole obtained is salted out. The compound is slurried with aqueous alcohol, made alkaline and treated with sodium hydroxide sulfite for a few hours at 70 ° C. to remove the last traces of colored impurities. Finally, the compound is recrystallized from aqueous alcohol.
The compound so obtained is a light yellow powder which, in dilute solution, gives vivid blue fluorescence. If a piece of cotton is washed in a detergent that contains a small amount of this compound, the material will appear much whiter than it was before treatment.

The diazo compound is separated off, suspended in water and mixed with a solution of 9.35 parts of 1- (p-tolyl) -3-methyl-5-aminopyrazole in dilute hydrochloric acid for the purpose of coupling the components. The acid content of the reaction mixture is kept constant by adding sodium acetate.
After the coupling has ended, the o-aminoazo dye obtained is salted out, filtered off at 25-30 ° C., then dissolved in pyridine and oxidized by refluxing for three hours with 30 parts of copper sulfate, 35 parts of ammonia and 60 parts of water. After the oxidation has ended, the mixture is acidified and the crude product obtained is recrystallized from aqueous acetone. AmaX = 345 m ?.

2- (4 "-Styryl-3" -sulfo-phenyl) [1 '- (p-sulfo-phenyl)
3'-methyl-pyrazolyl-4 ', 5'-4, 5] -1, 2, 3-triazole.
A solution of 16.5 parts of the sodium salt of 4-aminostilbene-2-sulfonic acid (purity 90 liters) and 3.45 parts of sodium nitrite in 150 parts of water is indirectly diazotized at 8-10 ° C. with 20 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The diazo compound is separated off, slurried in water and, for the purpose of coupling the components, mixed with a solution of 12.65 parts of 1- (phenyl-4's, sulfonic acid) -3-methyl-5 aminopyrazole and 5.3 parts of sodium carbonate in water. The pH of the mixture is maintained at 7-8 by adding sodium acetate during coupling.
After the coupling has ended, the solution is saturated with salt, the o-amino azo dye is filtered off at 25-30 ° C., then dissolved in water and oxidized by refluxing for three hours with 30 parts of copper sulfate and 35 parts of ammonia. When the oxidation is complete, the mixture is acidified and the crude product obtained is recrystallized from aqueous alcohol in the presence of sodium hydrosulfite. ? max = 344 m ?.
