Heat treatment furnace This invention relates to a heat treatment furnace in which a controlled atmosphere can be maintained for such purposes as gas carburizing, deep quenching, carbon nitriding, carbon restitution and carbonation. annealed.
According to the present invention, an oven for heat treatment comprises a treatment chamber, open at its base for charging and emptying, means for heating the contents of the treatment chamber, an antechamber located below the chamber treatment chamber and extending horizontally therefrom, a quenching tank located below the part of the anti-chamber which is not directly below the treatment chamber,
a lower door of the treatment chamber, means for raising and lowering this door, means for transporting a load horizontally from the lower door to a position above the tank to be quenched and for lowering said load from in this tank.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the treatment chamber, which may be of generally cylindrical shape with its vertical axis, has heating bodies incorporated in its side walls and distributed all around its vertical axis. A fan is preferably provided at the top of the treatment chamber and a cylindrical shield or partition extends inside the chamber over most of its length.
height, so that the atmosphere is drawn upwards through the batch by the fan, and thus to be rejected outside the chamber and then d e up and down between the protection and the heating bodies located in the walls of the chamber, so as to be heated by this means.
An embodiment of the oven will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing in which FIG. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a heat treatment furnace and FIG. 2 is a sectional plan taken along line II-II of FIG. 1.
In the embodiment shown of the furnace, the latter is intended for hot treatment, such as carburization; it comprises a cylindrical treatment chamber 10, the axis of which is vertical, the chamber 10 being constituted by a refractory cylinder with lateral walls 11 and closed at its upper part by a refractory roof 12.
The bottom of the chamber 10 is open, but can be closed by a vertically movable door 13, on which a trolley or a shelf containing the material to be treated, indicated schematically at 14, is carried in the chamber 10.
A centrifugal fan 15 is mounted at the top of the chamber 10, the fan is driven by a shaft 16 which passes through, the ceiling 12 of the chamber 10 and is driven by an electric motor 17.
A protective cylinder 18, made of sheet metal is mounted coaxially inside the chamber 10, its upper part is closed by a wall 19 in which an opening 20 is made constituting the housing of the fan 15. Thus when the fan 15 is set to:
movement by the motor 17, the atmosphere sphere in the chamber 10 is sucked up into the interior of the protection cylinder 18 and expelled by the fan 15 between the roof 12 of the chamber and the upper wall 19 of the protection cylinder and from there sucked down, between the protective side wall and the wall 11 of the chamber 10.
Body parts; electric heaters 21 are incorporated in the walls 11 of the chamber 10 at locations distributed all around the vertical axis of the chamber 10 so as to produce a substantially uniform heating effect.
The door 13 lined with refractory material by which the bottom of the chamber 10 can be closed is carried by a. cylinder. vertical hydraulic or pneumatic 25, mounted in a pit 26, below the furnace chamber 10:
the jack serves to lift the door from its open position, as indicated by the dashed line 13 ', to its closed position shown in solid lines, so that the bottom of the chamber 10 is closed and sealed.
A corridor-shaped anteroom 28 directly occupies the space below the treatment chamber 10 and also extends on one of its sides to cover a tank 29 to be soaked in oil.
Within the anteroom 28 is a roller conveyor 30 extending horizontally from a position below the processing chamber 10 to a position above the oil quenching vessel 29. and passing it through a door 31, at the end of the anteroom, to an exterior loading dock.
The roller conveyor 30 is composed of sections, namely a movable section 32 carried by the refractory door 13 of the treatment chamber and a second movable section 33 is carried above the tank 29 to trem per by a second cylinder. hydraulic or pneumatic 34 mounted in a vertical position on the top of the anti-chamber 28. The other sections 35, 36 and 37 of the roller conveyor 30 are fixed.
The whole of the anteroom 28 is bounded by the side walls 38 and a roof 39, and a controlled atmosphere is maintained in the anteroom so as to avoid contamination of the atmosphere in the treatment chamber 10.
For operation, a shelf or trolley, containing. toothed wheels or other parts intended to be heat treated, is placed on section 37 of the conveyor on the loading dock outside the oven door 31, as shown schematically at 14A.
The door 31 is then opened and the loaded trolley is moved by an extension rod adapted to the trolley, in the anteroom 28 to the position indicated by 14B, the door is, then closed behind it. After remaining for some time in position 14B, during which the material to be treated is freed of the air it contains,
the door 13 of the treatment chamber 10 is lowered by means of the jack 25 and the loaded carriage is driven horizontally in the position designated by 14C,
wherein it is supported by section 32 of the movable conveyor on the lower door. The door is then lifted from its lower position 13 'by the jack 25 to its raised position 13, which introduces the loaded carriage 14 into the treatment chamber 10, itself located inside the protector. tion 18.
The heat treatment is then. performed in chamber 10, fan 15 circulating the atmosphere inside the chamber, and at the end of the treatment period door 13 is lowered again, the loaded cart is withdrawn back from position 14C in position 14B in which it is placed on the movable section 33 of the conveyor carried by the jack 34.
The latter is then actuated to lower the loaded carriage into the quenching tank 29 for the quenching operation. After quenching, the loaded carriage is raised by the jack 34 and, after the outer door 31 has been opened, the loaded carriage is driven out of the anti-chamber 28.
The device described is intended for closed cooling, that is to say that the quenching takes place without removing the objects from the atmosphere of the furnace, this together with quite uniform and effective heating of the chamber. Provision is also made, if necessary, for the possibility of cooling the batch in a protective atmosphere in the anteroom 28 before taking it outside the oven.
Other forms of heating can be employed, for example gas heating.
If desired, a separate door can be provided in the side wall 35 of the antechamber along the top of the soak pot 29 to allow side access to the antechamber on one side of the conveyor 30 for the removal of water. the batch laterally after it has been lowered from the processing chamber 10.
