Process for the production of vat dyes According to the process of German patent specification No. 517195, by condensation of naphthoylenaryl- (or alkylaryl-) - imidazole-peri-dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides with o-diamines, asymmetrically constructed vat dyes are obtained, which are very good for Dyeing and printing cotton, cell wool and viscose rayon are suitable.
They have the following composition:
EMI0001.0011
wherein R1 and R., mean substituted or unsubstituted aryl radicals which are different from one another. Insofar as mixtures of isomers are present, these can be separated from one another, for example according to the method of German Patent No. 536911 or its additional patent No. 538314, 567210, 576132 and 607945.
Although all of these dyes have a pronounced drawability to vegetable fibers, they also have good detergency, chlorine and very good lightfastness, but their fastness to soda cooking leaves much to be desired. It is also not 'possible to convert these dyes into their leuco-sulfuric acid esters according to the numerous processes that have become known so far.
It has now been found that vat dyes are obtained which also meet high demands with regard to the fastness to soda and can be converted into their sulfuric acid esters via their leuco compounds via a wide variety of methods, surprisingly, if naphthoyleneariamidazoleperidicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides are used substituted or unsubstituted 1,
2-diamino anthraquinones condensed to a compound with two imidazole rings. As 1,2-diaminoanthraquinones, for example, compounds of the following general formula come into consideration:
EMI0001.0036
wherein R is hydrogen, an alkoxy, benzoylamino, chlorobenzoylamino or fluorobenzoylamino group.
You can prepare the compounds with two imidazole rings in a single operation in which the naphthoylenearyl-imidazole-peri-dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides with the 1,2-di-aminoanthraquinones in the presence of organic solvents or diluents or condensed in aqueous suspension at higher temperatures directly to the compounds with two imidazole rings.
But you can also first condense the naphthoylenaryl-imidazole-peri-dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides with the 1,2-diaminoanthraquinones in a low-boiling solvent or diluent to form an intermediate and the latter by further condensation at higher temperatures into the compound with two imidazole rings over lead.
The new dyes are characterized by their great color strength.
Example 1 340 parts by weight of naphthylene-benzimidazole-peridicarboxylic acid anhydride and 250 parts by weight of 1,2-di-aminoanthraquinone are heated to 210 for about 15 hours with 3000 parts by weight of trichlorobenzene. After cooling to 150, it is filtered off with suction and the filter residue is washed out with 2000 parts by weight of hot trichlorobenzene. The adhering solvent is removed with methanol or ethanol and the press cake is dried.
In this way, a deep dark brown, crystalline pigment is obtained in a very good yield which, from a reddish brown vat, dyes cotton in a clear copper shade. The dye has very good wash, chlorine, soda boiling and lightfastness.
Example 2 38 parts by weight of naphthoylene-benzimidazole-peridicarboxylic acid anhydride and 40 parts by weight of 1,2-di-amino-4-benzoylaminoanthraquinone are heated to boiling in 380 parts by weight of trichlorobenzene for 15 hours. Working up is carried out as given in Example 1. The dye obtained dyes cotton from a red-brown vat in blue-tinged red-brown shades with very good fastness properties.
Example 3 374 parts by weight of naphthoylene-4'-chlorobenzimidazole-peri-dicarboxylic acid anhydride and 250 parts by weight of 1,2-diaminoanthraquinone are refluxed with 3000 parts by weight of quinoline for 10 hours. The dyestuff formed is sucked off while it is still hot, and the presscake is first washed with hot quinoline and, after cooling, with methanol. The dark brown crystal powder obtained dyes cotton from a red-brown vat in copper-colored shades.
Example 4 20 parts by weight of naphthylene-4'-ethoxy-benz-imidazole-peridicarboxylic anhydride and 10 parts by weight of 1,2-diaminoanthraquinone are refluxed with 150 parts by weight of quinoline for 6 hours. Working up is carried out as given in Example 3. The dye obtained in good yield dyes cotton from a red-brown vat in deep dark brown shades.
The dye produced in this way can be converted into the leuco-sulfuric acid ester in the following way: 20 parts by weight of the dye and 15 parts by weight of copper powder are added at 35 ° C. to an esterification mixture prepared from 200 parts by weight of a-picoline and 40 parts by weight of chlorosulfonic acid at 20-25 ° C. The mixture is stirred for one hour at 45 ° C. and the resulting dark mass is then added to a mixture of 500 parts by weight of water, 500 parts by weight of ice and 10 parts by weight of kieselguhr.
The dark precipitate is filtered off with suction, washed with cold water and added to a solution of 40 parts by weight of caustic soda in 1000 parts by weight of water. The a-picoline is removed by vacuum distillation and the ester solution is clarified.
The clear brown solution of the leuco sulfuric acid ester is salted out with common salt. The leuco-sulfuric acid ester, which is dried and stabilized by adding soda, dyes cotton, viscose rayon and cellulose in dark brown shades that correspond to the original vat dye and have the same very good fastness properties.
Example 5 100 parts by weight of naphthylene-benzimidazole-peri-dicarboxylic acid anhydride are mixed with 115 parts by weight of 1,2-diamino-4- (4'-chlorobenzoylamino) anthraquinone in 1000 parts by volume of trichlorobenzene while continuously distilling off the reaction water 20 Heated to the boil for hours. Working up is carried out as indicated in Example 1. The dye obtained dyes cotton from a brown vat in strong red-brown shades with very good fastness properties.
Example 6 50 parts by weight of naphthoylene-benzimidazole-peridicarboxylic anhydride and 65 parts by weight of 1,2-di-amino-4- (2'-fluorobenzoylamino) anthraquinone in 1000 parts by volume of α-chloronaphthalene for 20 hours heated to boiling. The condensation product is worked up as described in Example 1. A red-brown pigment is obtained which dyes cotton from a brown vat in strong bluish red-brown shades with very good fastness properties.
