Fig. 42 shows, schematically, the various drive mechanisms of the machine.
The machine, shown in the drawing, comprises a frame 1 supported at its opposite ends by two spaced bases 2 and 3. On the upper face of each of these bases are fixed end covers 4 and 5 and a cover median 6 is fitted between the covers 4 and 5 while being supported by them. A camshaft is journaled in the two bases, this shaft actuating certain members described below.
In the base 3 is housed the set of transverse tool-holder carriages, the spindle-holder mechanism, the work-advancing mechanism, the mechanism with work-holder chucks and the locating mechanism (divider) of the spindle holder, the drive devices for these members being described below.
In the base 2 are housed several spindles for end machining and a gripping spindle, the cam group for controlling the end machining, the pumps for delivering the mixture used for greasing and cutting, as well as than their training mechanisms.
The spindle holder and the divider plate are shown more specifically in figs. 6B and 39. The spindle holder 263 is of the well known cone type and supports six spindles rotating at high speed and being generally designated 265.
On the spindle holder 263 is fixed, by means of a threaded shaft 266, a threaded stop 267 and a key preventing the rotary rotation, a sleeve 268 por as a flange on which is attached, by means of screws, a divider plate 269 which supports, by means of screws and lugs, marking elements 270, between which grooves are formed suitable for receiving the marking arm by which the positions of the spindle holder are determined .
The chuck operating mechanism is shown in figs. 6B, 12B and 37.
Each of the spindles comprises a work-holder mandrel actuated by a profiled disc 51 which comprises a boss 258 formed on either side of its plane to come into contact, firstly, with the arm 260 which opens the mandrel and allows work to advance to the stop that determines the first machining position after a completed work has been removed. Then, when the spindle holder stops at the first position, the work has advanced fully during the registration operation and the boss has reached the arm 259 which causes the chuck to close.
The two arms 259 and 260 act on the jaws 261 of the mandrel which are supported by the rods 262 and slide on them, said rods 262 being mounted on the spindle holder 263..
The adjustable advance mechanism of the work is shown in figs. 12B, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41. The advancement of the work takes place using the cam drum 52, a roller 325 and an arm 326 which can pivot about an axis 327. Another roller 329 can slide in a groove 328 formed in the lower end of the arm 326, this roller bearing on part of a block 330 provided with a dovetail which can slide in a groove 331, of corresponding shape, the arm 332 pivots around an axis 333. On the left end of the arm 332 is fixed a lug 334 engaged in a groove 335 of the feed shaft 336.
This mechanism acts on the push-sleeves 337 which re-press the work in one or the other direction and at the appropriate time, when the head 339, carrying these push-sleeves, is stopped in a position marked between the heads. 341 and 342.
The push-sleeve is first moved rearward against the action of spring 340 and is ready to advance the work through the feed mechanism and into the head 341. When the work has advanced to in the position shown in fig. 41, the shaft 336 moves the head 342, for example by means of the nuts 343 and the springs 344. The spring 340, which has been compressed, helps the advance mechanism to operate more smoothly. A member 345 is wedged on the shaft 336 and slides on the stabilizer shaft 346 fixed in the frame of the machine. The amplitude of the advance is adjustable using a crank 347 fixed to a threaded rod 348 journaled in the shaft 332 and screwed into the block 330 so that it can be moved in the grooves -331 and 328.
The stopping mechanism of the work is shown mainly in fig. 27.
It is actuated by the cam drum 70 using a roller 250 mounted on an arm 251 of an angled lever, the other arm of which carries a toothed sector 252. The teeth of the latter mesh with those of a rectilinear rack 253 supported in a bracket 254 fixed to the upper part of the base 3, on a split sleeve 255 supported between the two bases 2 and 3, this sleeve also being used to support accessories used for centering from the rear, drilling, etc. The lower end of the rack 253 carries the curved line head 256 to stop the work in place as it advances while the spindle holder is moved from one marked position to the next.
The transverse work carriers are shown in fig. 27, 28 and 29.
Fig. 27 shows a fan or radial arrangement of these carriages around the pins. Each carriage is made up of two parts, that is to say, an internal slide 301 and an external slide 300, shown in detail in FIGS. 28 and 29. The external slide 300 supports the tools and is fixed to the micrometric adjustment mechanism carried by the internal slide 301. This internal slide is, in turn, controlled by an adjustable cam, this cam being generally designated by 302 and adjusted by means of the worm mechanism 303 while being actuated by the cam drum 49.
The outer slider 300 is micrometrically adjusted by the inner slider 301 using a micrometer 257, of the barrel type, acting on a lug 304. Each pair of inner and outer sliders slides, forming an assembly, in the usual grooves with respect to the frame of the machine and these slides are suitably keyed to be able to be held in place.
The mechanism for positively stopping the lower transverse slides is mounted in figs. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6B and 28. This mechanism is actuated by the profiled face 275 formed on the internal edge of the rotary disc 269. The latter rotates with the spindle holder and said face is in contact with a mounted roller 276. on a support 277 fixed on the transverse shaft 278. On the ends of this shaft are wedged levers 279 and 280 to which are articulated rods 281 and 282 which, in turn, are articulated to the angled levers 283 and 284 which can pivot on either side of the base 3.
The upper arms of these angled levers have upright end faces 285 against which stops or positive stop screws, generally designated by 286, abut (six stops being provided on each of these two lower slides ) when the two lower slides 301 approach the structure (fig. 28). Each of the four upper slides has only one stopper. The reason there is this difference between the number of these stops is that the first two slides are used for roughing (positions one and two) and only need a stopper.
The slide in the third position, at the front, is a finishing slide, so a stopper for each spindle position is required. The slide in the fourth position, at the rear, is also a finishing slide and needs six stops. The slide which occupies the fifth position is generally used for planing and only needs a stopper because the accessory used for planing is sufficient to ensure that the desired dimensions are maintained. The slide which occupies the sixth position is the cutting slide and it is not necessary to provide great precision for this purpose, so that only one stopper is sufficient.
The stops or stop screws are engaged in the transverse slides or in consoles fixed to the slides.
The carriage 200 for the end machining tools is shown in Figs. 1, 3, 6A, 6B and 27. It is supported by a shaft 201, one end of which can slide in the support of the work spindle, while its other end is journaled in a bearing carried by the right-hand base 2. It is slidably controlled by the cam drum 62 mounted on the main camshaft by means of a roller 202 acting on a lever with two arms 203 pivots around an axis 204. The lower end of this lever is engaged in a groove 205 formed in the shaft 201.
To prevent the carriage or the turret 200, as well as the shaft 201, from rotating with respect to one another, the shaft 201 is made to comprise two flat flats with opposite shoulders (FIG. 20) on which rest two rollers 206 supported by pins 207 screwed into a sleeve 208. The rollers and the sleeve move towards the shaft 201, the rollers rolling in. grooves 209 cut in a sleeve 210 rigidly supported by the two walls 211 and 212 of the right-hand base 2, the sleeve being prevented from rotating by being held in place by a key.
The controls for the gripping spindle and auxiliary spindles for end machining are shown in figs. 6A, 12A, 13, 14 and 18.
The group of cams for axial feed is formed by a series of cams, a cam being provided, at each spindle position, to move the gripping spindle and the auxiliary spindle for end machining, towards the work. , these pins being returned by springs.
When the machine is fully equipped, it has five auxiliary spindles for end machining and a gripping spindle, the tool spindles being fitted with tools suitable for the machining envisaged. To avoid unnecessary repetition and unnecessary detail, only an auxiliary spindle for end machining 29 as well as gripping spindle 30 will be described. Figs. 13, 15, 18 and 21 show that four holes are drilled in each of the transverse partitions of the base 2 for the other four auxiliary pins.
The mechanism, used to control the six spindles, comprises a group of cams 61 driven by the camshaft 43 by means of the gears 58, 59 and 60. The spindle 29, established in the fourth position, is actuated by a cam 171 (fig. 6A and 12A) acting on a roller 172 mounted on an arm of an elbow lever which can pivot around the axis of a vertical shaft 162. The other arm of the shaft elbow 173 carries a roller 175 housed in a slot of an arm 176 wedged on the vertical shaft 168. Another arm 176a is wedged on the lower end of this shaft 168 (fig. 6A, 13 and 14).
When the arm 176 is angularly moved by the cam 171, it advances a rod 199 connected, in an adjustable manner and by a bracket 198, to the spindle 29 occupying the fourth position, so that the spindle also advances. The return movements of these members are obtained by means of springs 177 and 178 which are connected respectively to the shaft 176 and to the crank lever 173.
By similar mechanical connections, the group of cams can act on the other auxiliary spindles for end machining occupying the first, second, third or fifth position. Thus, the cam 182 (fig. 13) oscillates an arm 192 wedged on the upper end of a sleeve 193 which surrounds the vertical shaft 187 and comprises an arm 192a, at its lower end, advancing a similar rod 199. to that shown in fig. 6A for the spindle occupying the first position.
Similarly, the spindle, occupying the second position, is controlled by the cam 181, by an arm 189 mounted on the upper part of a sleeve 190 and by an arm 191 mounted on the sleeve. lower part of said sleeve 190.
The spindle, occupying the third position, is controlled by the cam 180, by an arm 186 wedged on the upper part of the shaft 187 and by an arm 188 wedged on the lower part of this shaft.
The spindle, occupying the fifth position, is controlled by the cam 179, an arm 183 mounted on the upper part of a sleeve 184 and an arm 185 mounted on the lower part of this sleeve (fig. 14).
The gripping pin 30, which occupies the sixth position, is controlled by a cam 160 acting on a roller 161 carried by an arm of an angled lever 162 (fig. 13), the other arm 163 of which (fig. 14). carries a roller 164 housed in the slot made in an arm 165 wedged on the upper part of a sleeve 166 which can oscillate around the axis of the shaft 168. An arm 167 (fig. 6A and 12A) is wedged on the lower end of this sleeve 166. The arm moves forward and backward one of the rods 199 connected to the gripping pin 30 by adjustable connection means.
The backward movements of this spindle are caused by the springs 169 and 170 (fig. 13). Analogous or equivalent springs are arranged to move the auxiliary pins back into each of the other positions. Both cams 194 and 195 are used to actuate special accessories and cam 196 is generally intended for tapping mechanisms. At the upper end of the cam group is established another cam 197 which can be used to control various limit switches for special accessories.
The gripping spindle and auxiliary spindles for the end machining are brought together and away from the work area by means of rods 199 which are connected to different consoles 125 and corresponding arms established at the end of the machine where the cam group is located.
The cam group 61 can easily be lifted, as a whole, to be replaced by another group when moving from one job to another. The cam group can be housed in a housing B which can be opened, so that this group can be separated from its driving members by moving the gears 59 and 60 away from each other.
The chuck of the gripping pin is shown in Figs. 6A and 21 to 26.
The whole of the gripping pin is moved until its mandrel is engaged on the work, after which the cam 63 moves the arm 120 angularly by rolling the pinion 12.1 on the toothed sector 122 established at the 'lower end of the arm 120. The pinion 121 is set on a shaft 123 which can rotate and slide and which carries a right-hand thread and a left-hand thread on which are respectively engaged a fork 124 and a bracket 125, which causes the 'separation of these two members, the fork 124 acting on a sleeve 126 which forces the mandrel 127 to clamp the part when the latter is cut from the bar housed in the gripping pin 30.
This is achieved using a clamping mechanism with balls 128 which works as follows.
The console 125 is interposed between two collars 129 and 130, wedged on an outer tube 131 forming part of the assembly of the gripping pin 30, so that it cannot move. On the other hand, when the shaft 123 rotates the fork 124, the sleeve 126 moves to force the balls into the mandrel 128 between the two corners. 136, which forces these to move away one towards the outer tube 131 and the other towards the inner tube 132. As the tube 132 is retained by the nut 133 established near the pinion 32, it cannot move and the pressure exerted by the balls therefore causes the displacement of the outer tube 131 which slides on the clamping head 134, which closes the mandrel on the workpiece.
When this has been cut out and the gripper pin assembly has retracted, the chuck opens and the workpiece is ejected. This gripper spindle can also be used as follows for a second machining operation. With the workpiece cut and clamped in the gripping mandrel and the spindle having retracted, a second machining tool can intervene, for example a tool for drilling a centering hole can be placed in the path of the spindle, after which the one -c here advance until the part comes into contact with this tool. The spindle then moves back and the part is ejected.
As regards the drive mechanisms, reference is made to FIG. 42 which shows schematically the various mechanisms actuated by a positive motor device rotating at constant speed and consisting of a grooved pulley 10 wedged on a shaft 11 and driving a differential 12 actuating a gear transmission 13 for the spindles and the shaft 14. From this shaft 14, the drive takes place in three directions.
A first drive is done using a pinion 15 which meshes with the outer teeth 16 of a ring gear 17 externally and internally toothed and whose inner teeth 18 mesh with a pinion 19 wedged on a shaft 20 carrying a pinion 21 meshing with the outer teeth 22 of another ring 23 toothed externally and internally, the inner teeth 24 of which mesh with the pinions 25 actuating the pins. A second drive takes place from the shaft 14 by the pinion 15, the ring gear 17, an internal pinion 26 to a shaft 27 and by a large gear 28 and a pinion 28a to the pins 29 of the accessories and the gripping pin 30 using the gears 31 and 32.
A third drive takes place from the shaft 14 by a worm 33, mounted on this shaft, and by a tangent wheel 34 mounted on a feed shaft 35, mechanically actuated (fig. 15, 16, 17 and 19). which is driven by this mechanism at a reduced speed and transmits its movement to the variable speed transmission 36 for advance and to a shaft 37. The latter carries a slip clutch 38 coupled to a shaft 39.
It is assumed that all the tool carriages have retreated and are ready to approach the work quickly. The disc clutch 40 is tightened to connect the pinion 41 to the shaft 11 and thereby transfer the high speed movement from the gear 42 to the shaft 39. The two shafts 35 and 39 then rotate at different speeds. in opposite directions. but the shaft 39, which turns faster, makes the clutch 38 slip and the camshaft 43 is driven at a high speed by a worm 39a of the shaft 39 and by a tangent wheel 43a mounted on the shaft. 'camshaft 43, which drives the tool carriers quickly inward to a specific location. When this point is reached, the clutch 40 is released and the clutch 38 for the advance takes place as explained below.
The transverse carriages are actuated by the camshaft. 43 by means of the gears 44, 45, 46 and 47 as well as by the shaft 48 (fig. 12B) and the cams 49 (fig. 30) attached to these carriages.
The drive is transmitted, at this point, to the spindle holder, to a cam 50 which controls the locking lug, to a disc 51 which controls the mandrel, to the cam drum 52 for the advance of the work, to the locating gears 53, 54 and 55 of the spindle holder and to the locating arm 56 (fig. 39 and 40). The camshaft consists of two parts connected to one another, for example at the place where the clutch 57 is located (FIG. 12B), by a coupling controlled by hand, which will be discussed later.
At the other end of the camshaft 43, the high speed transmission takes place using gears 58, 59 and 60 to the cam group 61 which advance the accessory spindles for end machining.
On the camshaft is also mounted a camshaft 62 which controls the movements of the end turret in addition to those of. pins or accessories for them. machining. at the end. A drum also carries a cam 63 which controls the clutch 40 for the high speed drive. Cam drum 63 controls the mandrel of the gripping spindle as explained later. The cam drum 70 controls the stopping of the work.
When the tools have been brought at high speed near the work, the clutch 40 is released and momentary braking is exerted at 64 on the gear 64a, the speed of which decreases and the clutch of the advancement mechanism drives the one. - here at reduced speed and the speed of all the tools is reduced until it is equal to that of slow travel. At the end of the forward cycle, clutch 40 is re-tightened and the tools are again drawn aside at high speed and stopped, locking pin 108 is raised, spindle holder is brought to its position marked next and the locking lug is replaced.
The cycle is thus repeated as long as the machine is running.
Close to the pulley 10 are the gears for driving the pump and the chain transmissions 65, 66, 67, 68 and 69.
A reversing coupling 71 is mounted on the shaft 11 of the pulley, near its end which carries the pulley, this coupling being driven by a toothed wheel 72 and forming part of a safety mechanism described below.
The means for obtaining the disengagement of the camshaft are shown in fig. 32 to 36.
If the operator wishes to disable the work advancement mechanism and the work clamping and locating mechanisms, while he is finishing a test sample of the work or during that he proceeds to the adjustment of a tool he acts on a lever 100 (fig. 32 and 33) to release the clutch 57. He thus also removes the cam 50, which controls the locking pin, d A gear 44. The right part of the machine then operates normally while the left part stops. The handle 100 is wedged on a rod 101 whose internal end carries a part provided with a lug 103 engaged in. a groove 104 of a sliding member 105.
This member slides on a rod 106 to put the clutch 57 in contact with the graining 44 or to move it away from the latter, this gear 44 being engaged, with a long key, on a part of a shaft to cams 43 in two pieces. The device with a locking pin, shown in the aforementioned figures, is constituted by a lever with two arms, the horizontal arm 107 of which carries the locking pin 108 while a vertical arm 109 co operates with the cam 50, which controls the locking lug.
The two-arm lever 107, 109 is articulated to an eccentric axis 110 (fig. 32) and is adjustable by rotating a plate 111 (fig. 33 and 36) mounted on the outside of the axis 110 to correct everything. misalignment between locking lug 108 and block 112 forming part of the spindle holder. A spring 113 exerts pressure on the arm 109 and also on the lug 108 to prevent any play between these parts.
The reversing and safety mechanisms are shown in fig. 17, 18 and 19.
It is sometimes advantageous to be able to reverse the direction of travel of the machine for setting tools or checking parts. It is then necessary to bring in a safety or locking mechanism so that the machine cannot be started, at forward speed, in both directions at the same time. To this end, a lever 140, controlled by hand, is mounted on the shaft 141, the operation of this lever serving to release the clutch 38.
When the shaft 141 is rotated in the indirect direction (that of clockwise) with respect to fig. 18, the flat 142 (FIG. 19) is forced to lift the lower arm 143 of the lever 144 and to move the upper arm 145 to the left of FIG. 18, which releases clutch 38 for advancement. At the same time, a part 146, wedged on the shaft 141, rotates to present a groove 147 to a lug 148 mounted on a lever 149 so that this lever can be moved to the right or to the left to tighten the reverse clutch 71 and release the clutch 40 for the high forward speed,
the two control members of these clutches being interconnected by a rod 15a (FIG. 16), so that these members are moved simultaneously. The procedure is carried out in the reverse order to tighten the clutch 40 for the advance at high speed and to release the reverse clutch 71 at high speed. Slow travel must not be possible when reverse speed is used. When the lever 140 comes to its initial position, the part 146 is lowered and the lever 149 can only be moved to the left to allow high speed advancement.
The large handles 150, attached to the shaft 151, one of which is at the front and the other at the rear of the machine, are used to produce the clamping, by hand, of the high-speed clutch 40 in the event that the operator wishes to advance the tool-holder carriage step by step while adjusting a tool or checking a part. A cam, mounted on the drum 62, involves high speed advancement, during the regular operating cycle, with the aid of the lever 152 and the connecting rod 153. The cam, for high speed, can be switched off. action as usual, by pulling a button 154 (fig. 1, 12A and 18) which moves a roller 155 from this cam.
