Process for the production of curable mixtures of polymerizable ethylene derivatives and unsaturated polyesters The known mixed polymerization of unsaturated polyesters with polymerizable ethylene derivatives, in particular aromatic vinyl compounds such as styrene, to cured, insoluble plastics is already widely used.
The unsaturated polyesters are preferably made from α, f3-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, such as fumaric or maleic acid, and mainly dihydric alcohols, such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol or 1,4-butanediol , produced, mostly still saturated dicarboxylic acids, such as succinic acid, adipic acid. Phthalic acid and terephthalic acid can also be used.
The mixtures of such unsaturated polyesters with polymerizable ethylene derivatives, such as styrene, divinylbenzene, acrylic or methacrylic acid derivatives and esters of vinyl or allyl alcohol, are, after addition of polymerization-initiating catalysts, e.g. B. organic peroxides, cured in the heat or optionally after further addition of accelerators, such as metal salts soluble in organic solvents, in particular cobalt salts or tertiary amines, at room temperature.
While processing the mixed polymerizing mixtures in closed molds leads to curing products with perfect surfaces, the known polymerization-preventing effect of oxygen has a disadvantageous effect when the mixtures are hardened in open molds and especially when they are used as paints. The hardening remains limited to the deeper layers, while the surfaces in contact with the air remain more or less sticky and soft.
The lower the hardening temperature, the more pronounced the defect, and as a result creates particular difficulties wherever heat-sensitive materials such as wood are to be coated with the hardenable mixtures.
In order to get dry surfaces anyway, the sticky layer can be removed by washing with solvents. According to another proposal, tack-free surfaces should be achieved by adding substances to the hardenable mixtures which form an air-impermeable skin on the surface during hardening. Such additives, however, impair the adhesive strength of the coatings on the substrates.
Another disadvantage, which can be attributed to the unsatisfactory nature of the surface of the paint films produced from curable mixtures of the type mentioned, is that post-treatment by grinding and polishing is practically impossible. On the one hand, the sandpaper is very quickly smeared, and on the other hand, the surfaces are unclean.
It has now been found that even at room temperature or at only moderately elevated temperature in air, mixtures of the type mentioned which can be readily cured on the surface can be produced by using such unsaturated polyesters which have a bis (oxycyclohexyl) as the alcohol component. alkane or bis (oxycyclohexyl) cycloalkane of the general formula.

contain, where A is a divalent alkane or cycloalkane radical.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Such diols are z.
B. obtainable by nuclear hydrogenation of the corresponding bisphenols. Preference is given in particular to those diols which are derived from bisphenols which are obtainable by condensing monohydric phenols with aldehydes or ketones and are therefore particularly easily accessible industrially.
Examples include: bis (oxycyclohexyl) methane, a.a-bis (oxycyclohexyl) ethane, ss, P-bis (oxycyclohexyl) propane and 1,1-bis (oxycyclohexyl) cyclohexane. In the technical bisphenols, in addition to small amounts of the 2,2'- and 2,4'-isomers, the isomers with p-hydroxyl groups predominate. The hydrogenation products of these bisphenols obtained as mixtures of geometric isomers can be used as such. However, the higher melting isomers alone are also very suitable.
In addition to the bis (oxycyclohexyl) alkanes or cycloalkanes, the unsaturated polyesters can also contain other alcohol components, but the content of bis (oxycyclohexyl) alkanes or cycloalkanes is advantageously not less than 30% of the total weight of the Polyester.
The unsaturated polyesters can be prepared in the usual way by condensing the dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides with the alcohols, e.g. B. happen in the melt. The still liquid polyesters are advantageously mixed with small amounts of a stabilizer such as hydroquinone or tert. Butyl catechol, which improves the shelf life of the polyesters then mixed with polymerizable ethylene derivatives.
The technical effect associated with the new process occurs particularly with those curable mixtures which contain an aromatic vinyl compound, such as styrene, as the copolymerizing component, but the other ethylene derivatives already mentioned at the outset can also be used or included.
The mixtures presented according to the invention provide curing products whose surfaces exposed to the ingress of air are very hard and, for example, in the case of copolymerization carried out without external heat supply with the aid of the above-mentioned catalysts, that is to say during cold curing. B. do not result in permanent fingerprints. This also enables the production of well-adhering, air-drying lacquers which, compared to lacquers based on other unsaturated polyesters, are distinguished by significantly improved grinding and polishing properties. The paints can also be pigmented and, if necessary, blended with non-polymerizing solvents such as ethyl acetate.
However, the new mixtures can also be used with advantage in general in those cases in which curing does not take place in molds closed on all sides, e.g. B. when used as casting and leveling compounds or in the production of castings. If necessary, the correspondingly catalyzed mixtures can also be cured in the heat and z. B. are used to produce stoving enamels.
Example I 294 parts by weight of maleic anhydride, 1036 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride, 450 parts by weight of 1,3-butylene glycol and 1200 parts by weight of ss, ss-bis (oxycylclohexyl) propane (mixture of the geometric isomers) are passed through nitrogen at a temperature gradually increasing to 200 in a The stirred tank is esterified until an acid number of 21 is reached. 140 parts by weight of a 55% solution of the unsaturated polyester thus obtained in styrene are mixed with 2,
8 parts by weight of 1-oxy-1'-hydroperoxydicyclohexyl peroxide and shortly before processing with 0.8 parts by weight of a 20% cobalt naphthenate solution in toluene. The clearcoat obtained in this way dries after being painted on within 2-4 hours at room temperature to form a tack-free film, which after 24 hours exhibits good hardness and mechanical strength. achieved. The same film properties are obtained after 3 hours when drying at 50.
A similarly structured clear lacquer made of an unsaturated polyester, the composition of which corresponds to the above with the modification that the bis (oxycyclohexyl) propane is replaced by an equal molar amount of additional 1,3-butylene glycol, results even after several days of drying in the air no tack-free surface.
Example 2 An unsaturated polyester is prepared by the process described in Example 1 from 392 parts by weight of maleic anhydride, 888 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride, 186 parts by weight of ethylene glycol, 180 parts by weight of 1,3-butylene glycol and 1200 parts by weight of ss, ss-bis (oxycyclohexyl) propane, the is freed from low-melting geometric isomers by recrystallization from methanol and washing with acetone and has a melting point of 180. 0.27 parts by weight of hydroquinone are stirred into the polyester obtained with an acid number of 23 in the melt.
Then it is dissolved in styrene to form a 55% solution. The clearcoat obtained in this way is after the addition of 2 percent by weight of 1-oxy-1'-hydroperoxydicyclohexyl peroxide and 0.6 percent by weight of a 209% cobalt naphthenate solution in toluene and after adjusting to spray consistency by diluting with ethyl acetate with a spray gun on a wooden panel When applied, the clear varnish, which runs well and covers all the unevenness of the wood, dries to a colorless, transparent film within 3-5 hours at room temperature.
The excellent hardness achieved after 24 hours is combined with good adhesive strength and good elastic behavior. B. is expressed in the fact that the film
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
withstands 20 temperature changes of 1 hour at 50 and 1 hour at -15 without cracking.
Example 3 Using the unsaturated polyester described in Example 2, the following putty is produced: 75 parts by weight of unsaturated polyester, 65 parts by weight of styrene, 60 parts by weight of calcium carbonate, 35 parts by weight of barium sulfate, 5 parts by weight of titanium dioxide, 2 parts by weight of 50% toluene solution of a short oil ricinene alkyd - Resin, 2.8 parts by weight of 1-oxy-1'-hydroperoxy-dicyclohexyl peroxide, dissolved in 25 parts by weight of ethyl acetate.
If this mixture is sprayed onto a wooden surface after stirring in 0.8 parts by weight of a 20% cobalt naphthenate solution in toluene, it dries tack-free in 2-4 hours and can be perfectly sanded and polished after 24 hours.
Example 4 A mixture is prepared which consists of equal parts by weight of styrene and one of 392 parts by weight of maleic anhydride, 888 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride, 260 parts by weight of ethylene glycol, 212 parts by weight of diethylene glycol and 960 parts by weight of SS, SS-bis (oxycyclohexyl) propane according to the information of Example 1 and stabilized with 0.01% hydroquinone, unsaturated polyester with an acid number of 25 and 2 percent by weight of 1-oxy-1'-hydroperoxydicyclohexyl peroxide.
If 0.4 percent by weight of a 20% cobalt naphthenate solution is added to the mixture shortly before use and poured into a glass mold open at the top, which can contain an object to be embedded, it solidifies after about 20 minutes and polymerizes into one within 3-4 hours hard, crystal-clear body, whose surface exposed to the air is just as hard and tack-free as the other surfaces enclosed by the form.
Example 5 580 parts by weight of maleic acid, 740 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride, 250 parts by weight of ethylene glycol, 180 parts by weight of 1,3-butylene glycol and 1120 parts by weight of 1,1-bis- (oxycyclohexyl) -cyclohexane are gradually increased to 1800 parts by passing through Nitrogen esterified in a stirred tank to give an unsaturated polyester with an acid number of 20.
A 50% solution of this unsaturated polyester in styrene is mixed with 4% by weight of a paste made from equal parts of 1-oxy-1'-hydroperoxydicyclohexyl peroxide and di-butyl phthalate and 0.5% by weight of a 20% cobalt naphthenate solution in toluene. If the mixture obtained is painted in a thick layer on a rust-free sheet of iron, the polymerization which soon sets in at an air temperature of 25 results in a coating that hardens on the surface and also in deeper layers and has good adhesive strength.
After 2-3 hours it is tack-free, after 24 hours it does not leave any permanent fingerprints.
EXAMPLE 6 A mixture of 882 parts by weight of maleic anhydride, 148 parts by weight of phthalic anhydride, 419 parts by weight of ethylene glycol, 212 parts by weight of diethylene glycol and 480 parts by weight of SS, SS-bis- (oxycyclohexyl) -propane is stirred in a stirred vessel while passing a weak stream of nitrogen within 2 Heated to 180 hours. The water formed is distilled off via a column. After heating to 180 for 3 hours, most of the water has passed over and the acid number has fallen to 75.
The column is then removed and, after the addition of 0.2 part by weight of hydroquinone, the esterification is continued at a temperature gradually increasing to 200 and the nitrogen flow gradually increasing until an acid number of 21 is reached. After cooling to 160, another 0.2 part by weight of hydroquinone is stirred in. When the temperature has fallen further to 1300, 840 parts by weight of styrene are added and the mixture, which continues to cool, is stirred until it is completely dissolved.
The polyester-styrene solution obtained in this way can be used to produce castings and glass fiber laminates which are distinguished by their excellent thermal stability. The solution mixed with 2% by weight of benzoyl peroxide hardens after being poured into a mold by heating for 4 hours at 75 to form a crystal-clear test specimen which, after 8 hours of tempering at 110, has the following properties: impact strength: 3.3 cmkg / cm2 Flexural strength: 1000 kg / cm Brinell hardness: 10 sec. 1460 60 sec. 1410 Martens heat resistance: 114.
In connection with glass fibers, even better heat resistance with over 200 degrees of martens is achieved.
