Caliper
The present invention relates to a caliper.
This caliper is characterized by the fact that it comprises a rod of circular cross section at one end of which is fixed one of its jaws, the second jaw being mounted so as to be able to both slide and rotate on said rod, the whole in such a way as to allow the measurement of both lengths and angles.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example. an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a caliper.
Fig. 2 is an end view, the movable jaw being placed in an angular position different from that of FIG. 1 and,
fig. 3 is an axial section of a detail, on an enlarged scale.
The caliper shown comprises a rod 1, of circular cross section, at one end of which is fixed one of the jaws 2 of the caliper. The second jaw, designated by 3, is fixed to a sleeve 4 mounted on the rod 1 so as to be able to slide and turn on it.
A longitudinal groove 5 is made in the rod 1. This groove is intended to receive a retractable finger 6 fixed to the sleeve 4 by means of an elastic blade 7 which, when it is engaged in the groove 5, maintains the jaw. 3 in the plane formed by the jaw 2 and the axis of the rod 1. In this angular position of the jaw 3, the caliper can be used like an ordinary caliper and makes it possible to measure lengths.
For this purpose, the rod 1 bears a graduation 8, formed of a series of circular lines, which bears a numerical scale 9 of which only part of the figures have been indicated in the drawing. A window 10 is made in the sleeve 4 and allows the reading of the scale 9. The sleeve 4 also carries a vernier 11.
When the finger 6 is lifted, so as to be released from the groove 5, the sleeve 4 can rotate around the rod 1. The angular position of the jaw 3 can be read using a scale 12, expressed in degrees, carried by the sleeve 4 and which cooperates with a longitudinal line 13 carried by the rod 1. The caliper thus makes it possible to measure angles such as the angle formed by two faces of the same part, in which case the two jaws are applied l 'against each other and the jaw 3 displaced angularly with respect to the first until each of them rests against one of the faces of the part to be measured. It is also possible to measure the angle formed by two surfaces distant from each other.
I1 will then suffice to move the jaw 3 axially until the two jaws each come into contact with one of the surfaces, then to bring the jaw 3 into the desired tongue position.
In order to facilitate this operation, the caliper comprises a ring 14, movable axially, carrying a locking screw 15 bearing on the bottom of the groove 5. When the jaw 3 occupies the desired axial position, the ring 14 is blocked against it, which makes it possible to rotate the jaw 3 on the rod without modifying its axial position. The ring 14 carries a repository 16 enabling the angular position of the jaw 3 to be read.
Finally, it should be specified, this detail not being visible in the drawing, that the numerical scale 9 is repeated four times on the rod 1, along four generatrices arranged at 900 from each other and that the The opening of the window 10 extends over more than 900. As a result, one or the other of the digital scales is always visible through the window 10, regardless of the angular position of the jaw 3.
