The present invention relates to a machine for forming garments collars and capable of forming collars of a wide variety of shapes, models and sizes for various garments. for men, women and children. These garments can be women's blouses and shirts, jackets, pajamas, etc., for men, women and children. For the sake of simplicity, this description will be made with reference to men's shirts.
A large and growing number of men's shirts are of the sport type in which the conventional stand-up collar is omitted. In such shirts, the collar is attached directly to the body of the shirt by a seam generally referred to in the trade as the shirt neckline. Due to the wide variety of designs and shapes, as well as sizes, it is difficult to form the collar prior to packaging after the shirt is made and after laundering and ironing.
In addition to the differences between collars of various manufactures, there are differences in the way they are folded. In some cases, it is advantageous if the collar is folded so that a determined constant length of the back of the collar is exposed. In other cases, it is advantageous to expose the label and form the neck around the label so as to obtain a pleasing symmetrical arrangement. In addition, it is necessary to be able to process shirts that are not of the sport type and all ordinary shirts.
With the equipment known so far for forming collars, it is impossible for any one machine to be suitable for all shapes and sizes. Every year, the introduction of new forms of collars by manufacturers aggravates the problem. A garment manufacturer or a laundering or dry-washing establishment which must be able to handle the various designs, shapes and sizes of collars for adults and children must use different machines, each machine capable of handling a certain type and a certain class of collars.
The present invention aims to provide a machine having sufficient flexibility and adaptability to process garment collars of a wide variety of models and sizes.
The machine forming the object of the present invention for forming the collars of garments, comprising a front forming block and two lateral forming blocks disposed sy metrically with respect to the front block, these forming blocks being arranged to enter the opening collar of the garment, is characterized in that each forming block is removably mounted on a separate guide block supported by a base part of the machine, and in that it comprises a mechanism arranged to bring the body closer together. '' from each other the guide blocks carrying the side forming blocks, to allow the application of the garment to the machine and its removal, and to move the side forming blocks away from each other to form the collar.
The arrangement of the training blocks and their ability to move allow different shapes and models of necks to be processed.
In a particular embodiment, the forming blocks are advantageously arranged to exchange heat with the respective guide blocks capable of being heated, for example by steam or by an electric element.
A thin pressure plate may be associated with each side forming block, these plates extending towards each other and generally remaining aligned throughout the movement of the blocks towards each other. The pressure plates can thus overlap one another over the entire course of the formation blocks.
In some cases, it is advantageous that the front forming block can be moved simultaneously with the side blocks and, therefore, the mechanism for moving the guide blocks carrying the side forming blocks can include a driver which performs the movement of the side forming blocks and which is likely to engage with the front forming block in order to be able to move that front block along with the side blocks away from the line of movement of the blocks lateral when they move away from each other.
In a preferred embodiment, the forming blocks are mounted on one side of the base part of the machine while the mechanism for moving the guide blocks is mounted on the other side of this part and is coupled to the base part. forming blocks through openings in said room. A fixed plate on which the work can rest for pressing may be supported by a heated support block which carries a pressure plate cooperating with the pressure plates carried by the side forming blocks, said heated block being able to exchange pressure. heat with the fixed top.
An iron can be mounted so as to move towards these trays and away from them. It can be biased into the re-passage position in which it is closest to the pressure plates, and means can be provided to move the iron against this bias when the two side forming blocks are moved toward each other. other, that is, when a garment has to be removed from the machine.
In some applications, it is desirable that at least one of the forming blocks include a pocket in communication with the atmosphere and a supply of water or steam. A valve can be arranged to automatically communicate between the pockets and the water or steam supply for a short period only, when the forming blocks move away from each other.
When the connection connecting the bag to the atmosphere is covered by the garment, water or steam can be supplied through the bag.
Different degrees of pressing of the neck can be obtained if there are individual electric radiators to heat the forming blocks and the iron, and switching means to excite in successive stages the iron, the iron blocks. side forming blocks and the iron, and finally the side forming blocks, the front forming block and the iron.
Spring means may be provided for biasing the side guide blocks into one position, as can means including an air cylinder and a piston for overcoming the bias of the spring means for moving the side guide blocks to their other position. , and means for restricting the passage of air discharged from the cylinder to control the return stroke of the side blocks in response to the bias of the spring means.

Before describing the machine shown, it is necessary to give a brief description of the problem which arises with a men's shirt. We see at the fia. 2 a man's shirt 10 having shoulders 11 and 12 and a collar 13. The collar 13 is fixed to the body of the shirt at a neckline 14 and has a straight rear part 16 and side parts 17 and 18 meeting at the front 20 of the neck. The body of the cap 10 has a part 21 just below the rear part 16 of the neck, called the rear median part.
In the correct formation of a cheerleader neck, a large number of variables arise on their own, apart from those concerning dimensions. Thus, for example, the opening of the neck constitutes an important point and requires the creation of a triangular shape corresponding to the back and to the sides of the neckline. A triangle with an accentuated opening has sharp angles at the ends of the rear part 16 of the collar where the side parts of the collar meet it. Fig. 2 shows a triangle with a slight opening, therefore presenting curved corners. These corners can be rounded even more to form a triangle forming a round or verture or even a heart shaped opening.
Apart from the nature of the opening of the neck, the shape of the neck must be considered with regard to the various dimensions. Considering the general shape of the opening of the neck as triangular, it is possible to maintain this same triangular shape and to have a series of similar tri angles for necks of increasing size. It is also possible to maintain a constant distance between the rear part 16 of the neck and the front part 20. If the height of the triangular opening (that is to say the distance from the front part 20 to the center of the rear part 16) is kept constant, it is clear that if the size of the neck increases, the base of the triangle formed by the rear part 16 becomes larger.
It is also possible to keep the base of the triangle constant and to increase the height with the size of the neck, which moves the front part 20 downwards.
In addition to the possibilities above, the angle of the rising part of the neck can be determined. Thus, if the rear part 16 of the neck rises perpendicularly to the rear median part 21, this angle is zero. In practice, however, the rear portion of the neck is inclined rearwardly from vertical and the angle defined above may be between zero or a low angle of 10 degrees, for example up to 90 degrees. The angle is measured laterally between the rear part 16 and a plane perpendicular to the plane on which the liner is placed.
In addition, the processing of the collar tips and the rolling of the collar from the neckline close to the frontal part of the collar can be changed to achieve different effects.
It is clear, therefore, that a machine designed to form the collar must be able to account for a large number of variables to produce satisfactory work for a wide variety of shirts.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 to 8, the machine comprises a cover 25, preferably made of metal, having a longitudinal channel 26 extending from the front part to the rear part of the machine. The cover 25 is arranged to receive a plug 10 so that the shirt rests on the cover, the buttons of the shirt being housed in the channel 26. The cover 25 has a cutout 27 of generally tri-angular shape intended to receive the collar of the che put. The cover 25 is bolted to a base piece 28 having front and rear vertical flanges 29, 30.
A rectangular tray 31 is hingedly mounted on the cover 25 so that the liner can be neatly folded when the tray 31 is bottomed up on it.
The side forming blocks 32 and 33 and a front forming block 34 are slidably mounted on the base 28. The side blocks 32, 33 are supported so that they can move towards and away from each other, Say that the front block 34 is supported so as to be able to move in a line normal to the line of movement of the side blocks 32, 33. A triangular screen 36 is disposed above the upper surfaces of the formation blocks 32. , 33, 34.
The side block 32 is removably attached by a peg 37 to a base block 38 which is in turn attached by one or more bolts to a movable control block 39. The side forming block 33 is attached from the bottom. same way to a movable control unit 40. The side blocks 32 and 33 have external shapes suitable for exerting the desired neck forming action which will be explained below.
The front forming block 34 is likewise removably mounted on a base block 42. The front block 34 usually has a different shape from the side blocks 32 and 33 because the front block 34 acts on the front part of the. col and determines the frontal or lower vertex of the triangle shown in fig. 2. The side blocks 32, 33, on the other hand, cooperate with parts of said side parts 17 and 18 of the neck, so that the effective surfaces of these blocks may be different from those of the front block 34.
The control blocks 39 and 40 are each mounted on guide blocks 44 and 44a respectively, passing through slots 46 and 46a made in the base 28. The guide blocks 44 and 44a are retained in the corresponding slots by a split retaining plate 47 (fig. 8) bolted to the bottom of the base 28. The slots and the guide blocks shown allow a rectilinear movement of the guide blocks, but it is understood that these members can be curved so that the path of the blocks is curved from the front forming block 34. Bolts 48 and 49 are fixed in the lower part of the guide blocks 44 and 44a, the heads of these bolts being spaced from the heads. guide blocks.
The bolts 48, 49 function as pegs and cooperate respectively with split ends 50 and 51 of angled levers 52 and 53. These levers 52, 53 pivot at 54 and 55 on the base 28. They have split ends 56 and 57 respectively which are offset vertically so as to overlap (fig. 5).
The split ends 56 and 57 of the angled levers cooperate with a control pin 59 rigidly fixed to a carriage 61 acting below the base 28. The carriage 61 has an end portion 62 which is rigidly attached to a connecting yoke 63 which itself votes on a push rod 64. The rod 64 extends through a hollow bracket 65 and carries a compression spring 66 extending around the rod between a rod 67 inside it. the bracket 65 and adjusting nuts 70 at the other end of the rod 64. The latter is pivotally fixed at 71 to an oscillating arm 72 arranged to be moved manually or by any other means. The arm 72 is mounted on a pivot 73 at the front part of the base 28.
When moving the swing arm counterclockwise, looking at fig. 5, the push rod 64 is moved towards the rear of the machine against the action of the spring 66 and thus forces the carriage 61 to move back. The backward movement of the carriage 61 causes the displacement of the city plug 59 and thus actuates the two angled levers to produce the movement of the control blocks 39 and 40 inwardly towards each other. The carriage 61 is supported in position by the retaining plate 47 and by the console 65 bolted to the bottom of the base 28 (fig. 8).
The front forming block 34 is carried by the base block 42, which is itself supported on a control block 75. The latter has a number of pairs of threaded holes 76 into which the bolts coming from the screw can be screwed. block 42. Base block 42 and front forming block 34 can be arranged in any desired position relative to control block 75 by inserting the bolts through either pair of holes 76. control 75 is rigidly attached to guide block 78 (or may be formed integrally with block 78), guide block 78 carrying pins 79 and 80 extending downwardly through an elongated slot 81 provided in the carriage 61.
The che towns 79 and 80 have shoulders 82 and 83 intended to elevate the control block 75 above the base 28 to ensure smooth movement of the block along the base. The peg 80 supports one end of a coil spring 85, the other end 86 of which is fixed to a movable part 86a fixed to the carriage 61. The control block 75 carries a stop bolt 87 which is adjustably fixed to the block. so as to determine at will the extreme front position of the control unit 75.
In a position of the various parts of the machine, the compression spring 66 places the carriage 61 in the position shown in FIG. 5, so that the side forming blocks 32 and 33 are in their outermost outer positions, while the control block 75 is in the outermost forward position determined by the stop bolt 87. During movement of the swing arm 72 and the resulting movement of the push rod 64, the carriage 61 actuates the two angled levers as indicated above and, at the same time, moves the control unit 75 backwards, in the direction of the line of movement side forming blocks 32 and 33.
The control block 75 has a part 88 immediately below the movable block 42 containing an electric heating element 90 embedded in this part. Element 90 may include a thermostat so that the temperature of movable block 42 and of the front training block is maintained at a value suitable for the iron shot. Likewise, control blocks 39 and 40 house heating elements for heating side forming blocks 32 and 33 (Figs. 5-8).
The liner support screen 36 (Fig. 4) is supported by a block 94 by means of bolts or other fastening means. Block 94 has a portion 95 which rests on a heater block 96 enclosing a heater element 91. Block 94 and heater block 96 are rigidly joined by bolts 97. Heater block 96 has bosses 98 for relief. space block from base 28, screws 100 holding heater block and block 94 rigidly attached to base 28. Bolts 97 which pass through portion 95 of block 94 also retain a pressure plate 102 (fig. 5) having an active pressure part 103 facing upwards.
The part 103 is engaged on its opposite sides by pressure plates 104 and 105 in the form of a blade capable of sliding. The trays 104 and 105 are carried by the lateral formation blocks 32 and 33 and move with the latter. The heating block 96 serves to heat the screen 36 and the pressure plate 102.
In this described embodiment of the machine, the side forming blocks 32 and 33 do not pivot about the pegs 37, but remain stationary. The pressure plates 104 and 105 are fixed, for example by bolts, to the side forming blocks and thus these blade-shaped plates move longitudinally.
In a variant shown in FIG. 9, a side forming block 33a is pivotally mounted on a base 106 by means of a pivot socket 37a screwed into a base 106. The latter is rigidly fixed to the control block 40 of the machine. It is necessary to provide a relative angular movement between the forming block 33a and the pressure plate 104, and for this purpose the block 33a and the plate 104 are constructed as shown in FIG. 9 to cooperate with each other in the manner of a door hinge. A spring 107 is disposed around the ankle 37a and its ends bear against the block 33a and the pressure plate 104, the spring tending to separate these members.
It is necessary to keep the tray 104 in a fixed position relative to the base 106. To this end, the base 106 is slotted and the lower edge of the tray 104 is housed in the slot. Thus, the spring which tends to produce a relative angular movement of the block 33a and of the plate 104 tends to move the block 33a.
The same construction thus modified can be used with the other teral forming block 32. As the blocks 32 and 33 approach each other, the pressure plates 104 and 105 slide towards each other. another, these two plates (fig. 9) being placed on the opposite sides of the part 103 of the fixed pressure plate. In this variant, the pivoting block can adapt itself to a neck and press on a maximum length of the neck. In all variations, conduction heat maintains the various pressure plates at the desired temperature for the iron shot.
Another variant is shown in FIG. 10, in which the fixed block 95 carries a part 103 'of a fixed pressure plate, the edges of which are folded back. Pressure plates 104 'and 105' are capable of sliding in grooves of block 95 and are held in place by these folded edges of part 103 '. Coil springs 104a and 105a are held between pegs carried by the block 95 and pegs carried by the respective ends of the pressure plates 104 'and 105', urging these plates so as to move them away from one of the 'other.
A side forming block 33b is attached to a base 106 'by a bolt 37', the latter being tightened to lock the forming block 33b in a determined set position. A pressure plate 105 'has a curved part 105b arranged to match the end part of the block 33b of generally circular shape. Thus, the spring 105a holds the pressure plate 105 'tightly against the rounded end of the forming block 33b. The corresponding side forming block 32 can be constructed in the same way.
Fig. 11 shows a variant of the side forming block. A side forming block 110 is rigidly attached to a base block 111, for example by bolts. Block 111 is attached to control block 112 by a number of bolts. The training block 110 has an electric heating element 114 embedded in the block, the conductors connected to this element exiting the base block 111. The training block 110 carries a pressure plate 116 rigidly fixed on it. This plate has a part 117 fixed rigidly to the forming block 110; for example by bolts.
It is obvious that hot water or steam heating means can be used in place of the electric heating element. This is true, moreover, for all the heating means described or shown. When a training block such as block 110 of FIG. 11 has heating means, the base unit can be heated independently or not, at will.
Fig. 12 shows another variant of the training block. In this case, a training block 119 came integrally with a base block 120. The latter is bolted to a control block 121 having a transverse slot 122. The training block 119 and the base block 120 are intended to house a tubular heating element 124 whose conductors 125 extend downwards and not feel in the slot 122, then through a hole 126 drilled in the control block 121.
Fig. 13 shows a further variation in core, comprising a forming block 128 and a base block 129 within which is disposed a heating element 130, the latter having pins 131 extending downwardly from the base. base of the base block 129. A control block 131 has a plurality of jacks 134 intended to receive the pins 131 of the heating element. Contacts and wiring are arranged in control block 133 so that pins 131 can be depressed in a number of positions.
Several holes 135 of the bolt receptacles are provided in the control block 133, so that the forming block can be bolted in a number of positions.
Fig. 14 shows a new variant, of general construction similar to that shown in FIG. 10, but having a massive part 105c arranged to rest against the rounded forming block. The latter can move around a pivot 37 'or not, as desired. The solid part 105c remains in contact with the forming block and absorbs an appreciable amount of heat. The intimate thermal connection between the solid part 105c and a pressure plate 105 'results in a more uniform temperature. In general, if the formation block comprises its own heating means, only mechanical considerations dictate the fixing of the formation block on its base block.
However, if the heating means are housed in the base block, in addition to the mechanical considerations there is the question of the connection between the base block and the training block which must ensure good thermal conduction. This is achieved by providing precision machined mating surfaces on the base and forming blocks. It is advantageous to provide a construction in which the front forming block (cooperating with the front part of the neck) can be moved or kept fixed at will.
As stated above, it is frequently desirable to form or mold a neck so that the height of the generally triangular-shaped opening is kept constant, while the base of this opening along the neck. back of collar varies. Figs. 15 to 22 show variants in which the front forming block can be moved with the side forming blocks or not, at will. Furthermore, the machine is similar to that described above. The front training block 34 is rigidly attached to a base block 140. The latter may include, internally, an electric heating element. It has a portion 141 extending downward to support and guide the conductors.
The training block can include heating means if desired. The base block 140 has protruding sliding parts 142 and 143 resting on a carriage 61 'having an elongated slotted portion 145. The carriage 61' operates between the fixed base 28 of the machine and a lower plate 146 held down. by bolts 147 at a certain distance below the base 28. To maintain the spacing between these parts, bosses 148 extend between the base 28 and the plate 146. The base block 140 and the carriage 61 'are independently movable in the absence of a drive connection between them. The side of the base block 140 carries a pivot bolt 149 to which is attached a latch 150 having engaging portions 151 and 152 directed downward from both ends of the latch.
The carriage 61 'has a notch 153 intended to cooperate with the engagement part 151 of the lock. We see in fig. 17 that the engagement portion 151 of the latch can be positioned so that its end is in the notch 153. This forms a drive connection between the carriage 61 'and the base block 140. In the position shown at Figure 17, the front forming block 34 can be moved in the direction of the line of motion of the side forming blocks 32 and 33, or in the reverse direction.
In the position of the lock shown in FIG. 20, the engagement portion 152 is lowered into a notch 154 cut in the base 28 and the engagement portion 151 is lifted away from the carriage 61 '. The front forming block 34 now remains in this position even during machine operation when the carriage 61 'is moved.
A device provided with an index makes it possible to hold the lock in one or the other of the positions shown in fi-. 17 and 20. The lock can be pushed from the position shown in fig. 20 in an intermediate position shown in FIG. 21. Thus, when the carriage reaches the position shown in FIG. 17, the lock falls into the notch 153.
As indicated above, the various forming blocks can comprise individual heating means, or these can be contained in their basic blocks. Fig. 23 shows a control switch for the electric heating elements, while fig. 24 gives the circuit diagram of these various elements. The control switch 160 shown in FIG. 23 can be arranged in any desired position on the cover 25, in particular in the position shown in FIG. 1. It comprises a rotary knob 161 fixed to the axis of the switch. The button 161 can take four positions, and the switch 160 has indexes allowing the four positions to be identified.
It includes, for example, the indications Off, Rear block, Rear and side blocks, Four blocks. In addition, each switching position carries an il lustration of the various blocks constituting the assembly of neck formation. The illustrations of the particular blocks which are fed in the particular switching positions may appear in color or be marked in some other way so that the operator can easily see what is happening in each switching position. We see in fig. 24 that the button 161 is coupled to a movable contact 163 arranged to cooperate with fixed contacts 164, 165 and 166.
The movable contact 163 has an angular extent substantially equal to the total angular extent of the contacts 164 to 166, so that when the movable contact 163 is rotated counterclockwise by looking at FIG. 24, it successively engages the fixed contacts. It should be noted that the moving contact 163 simultaneously engages all the contacts 164, 165 and 166 in the last switching position.
The mobile contact 163 is connected to a pole 170 of a supply line. The fixed contact 164 is connected by a conductor 171 to a terminal of a heating element 172. The fixed contact 165 is connected by a conductor 173 to a terminal of each of two heating elements. 174 and 175. The fixed contact 166 is connected by a conductor 176 to a terminal of a heating element 177. The heating elements 172, 174, 175 and 177 are connected by their other terminals to a conductor 180. The conductor 180 is connected to one terminal of a thermostat 181, the other terminal of which is connected by a conductor 182 to the other pole 183 of the supply line. The various conductors 171, 173, 176, 180 and 182 are connected by terminal blocks shown in dotted lines.
The conductor 176 has a branch 184 connected to one terminal of an indicator lamp 185, the other terminal of which is connected to the pole 183.
Heating elements 172, 174 and 175 are associated with block 94, side forming blocks 32 and 33, and front forming block 34 respectively. If desired, each block can include an individual thermostat connected in series with the corresponding heating element. As already indicated, the heating elements can be placed in the formation blocks or in the base blocks.
By virtue of the device for controlling the heating elements described above, new methods of forming shirt collars become possible. When the control knob is in the position shown in fig. 23, the heatable units, fixed or mobile, are not powered and are therefore cold. If the control knob 161 is turned counterclockwise when looking at fig. 23 in the first position, the fixed block 94 for the back of the neck is heated.
The neck itself is stretched as a result of the movement of the side training blocks and the front training block. For some types of shirts, only the back part of the collar needs to be ironed. This iron stroke can be beneficial for sports shirts of certain types which do not have a neckline.
Rotation of control knob 161 to the next position (second active position) causes heating of rear block 94 and side forming blocks. The stretching of the collar combined with the action of the cold front forming block gives the front part of the collar a rounded appearance which is sought after for some sports shirts. The first active position with the cold side forming blocks and the hot back block extends the rounded appearance of the front part of the collar to the side parts.
The third active position of the control knob 161 causes the heating of all the blocks and is used for regular shirts and other shirts having necklines and which require a blow of iron practically on the whole collar. As a result, by stretching the neck and heat distributing areas along the entire length of the neck, an effect practically equivalent to a blow of iron is obtained along the entire length of the neck.
The neck forming mechanism and the cover are carried by a suitable support. The whole mechanism can be placed on a table. The lower part of the mechanism is enclosed between metal sheets 190 and 191 forming a box (fig. 25). These sheets are fixed to the base of the mechanism and extend longitudinally to the machine.
The folding plate 31 (fig. 1) is placed at the rear part of the machine, the operator generally standing in front of the cover 25, facing the plate 31 when the latter is in the position shown in FIG. 1. The sheets 190 and 191 have lower parts folded towards each other inwards (fig. 25). However, the free edges of the sheets 190 and 191 are spaced from each other, a marginal portion 192 of the sheet 191 being folded back as shown in FIG. 25 to form a vertical part offset below the free edge of the sheet 190.
A drop corridor is thus formed at the lower part of the box and allows pins, buttons and other objects that may fall into the machine to pass.
Although the collar forming machine just described gives full satisfaction, it may be useful for certain types of collars to iron the outside of the back of the collar. In addition, it may be advantageous to prepare the fabric for the iron stroke by applying a mist of steam or hot water to the fabric to moisten it, in order to obtain a smooth ironed surface. These results can be obtained by adding certain constructive characters to the machine described above.
The general structure of the variants which will be described (fig. 26 to 34) is generally similar to that of the machine described above. In the variant shown in FIGS. 26 to 29, the machine comprises a base 200 and a cover 201. The mechanism is generally similar to that described above and comprises a carriage 203 coupled to a control rod 204 provided with a compression spring 208. The carriage 203 carries a pin 205 for operating the angled levers 206 and 207. These levers operate side forming blocks 209 and 210. These blocks include blades 214 and 215 respectively for acting on the inner side of the rear portion of the neck. So far the construction is similar to that of the previous machine.
An iron 218 is pivotally mounted on a tray 217 to act on the exterior side of the rear portion of the neck. Iron 218 is elongated and may include heating means such as an electrical element. The iron 218 is carried by arms 219 and 220 extending upward from and pivoting on the plate 217. The iron 218 is able to move to get closer and away from the neck. It is normally biased towards the neck by a coil spring 222 extending between the base of the machine and a transverse tape 223 attached to the arms 219 and 220.
The iron 218 can be moved against its spring by pins 224 and 225 carried by the bent levers 206, 207. It can be noted that only one of these pins would be necessary. The pegs 224, 225 extend through arcuate slots in the base 200. The iron 218 can be locked in its withdrawn position against its spring 222 by a latch 227 cooperating with the ribbon 223. The latch 227 is pivotally mounted on a console 228 carried by the base 200, the latch being spring loaded so as to tend to remain in the locking position relative to the transverse strip 223.
We see in fig. 30 that the latch 227 is pushed upward to engage the ribbon 223. The latch 227 carries a release pin 229 extending upwardly through the cover 201.
A tray 230 is pivotally mounted on a console and arranged to lower the peg 229 when it. is moved down on the work. The downward movement of the che town 229 unlocks the iron 218 and allows the latter to respond to the stress of its spring and engage the outer surface of the neck.
A screen 232 of generally triangular shape is carried by a post 233 extending upwardly from the base 200. The post 233 includes heating means for maintaining the screen 232 at a high temperature. The heating elements for both my 233 and the iron 218 can be connected together. Thus, in the switching device shown in FIGS. 23 and 24, heating element 172 corresponds to heating elements for post 233 and iron 218.
The side forming and ironing blocks 209 and 210 can be of various types. Fig. 32 shows a construction allowing the forming block to escape steam or hot water. The block shown comprises a body 234 and a base 235. The base can be hollowed out to form a pocket 236. The body 234 has a passage 237 extending upwards, this passage being connected to the outside by means of a number of fine openings 238 extending through the wall of the block. The size of these openings, their number and the size of the area covered by the block can be modified as required. The pocket 236 is closed by a plate 239 permanently attached to the base.
Steam or water can be sent to the pocket of the block through a connecting pipe fitting to an inlet pipe 240.
The cross-sectional areas of pocket 236 and passage 237 vary depending on whether steam or water is being supplied. In each case, chamber 236 and passage 237 occupy only a small portion of the volume of the block. Even if cold water is sent to the block through pipe 240, the amount of water supplied is small enough to be converted into steam which escapes through the openings of the block. The part of the block having these openings is in contact with the collar of the garment.
The training block can include its own heating means, for example gas, hot water, steam or electric, or the base of the block on which the latter rests can include its own heating means.
In order to use a lateral formation block of the vapor discharge type like that shown in FIG. 32, means may be provided for projecting a jet of water or steam from each of the two lateral forming blocks. Fig. 31 schematically shows a control device for this purpose. The carriage 203 for operating the side forming blocks is coupled to a piston 242 of an air cylinder 243. The cylinder includes an air pipe 244 connected through a throttle valve 245 to a two-way valve. 246 controlled by hand, comprising a compressed air inlet 247 and a control handle 248.
The valve 246 has chambers 246a and 246b arranged, with respect to the air inlet 247, at a connection 245a connected to the throttle valve and to a air outlet 246c, so that in one position of the valve, compressed air is sent to the cylinder 243. In the other position of the valve, air from the cylinder can pass through the valve d '245 throttling towards the exit. In this latter position of the valve, the compression spells (66 fig. 5, or 208 fig. 27) are powerful enough to move the forming blocks into their spread position. However, the air throttling action due to valve 245 prevents any sudden movement of the blocks when they are released.
In the neutral position of valve 246, the air in cylinder 243 maintains the forming blocks in any desired position. The valve 246, air cylinder and throttle valve 245 can be applied to any neck forming machine. The control handle 248 can be moved either to the left or to the right, to produce movement of the carriage 203 in either direction.
The control handle 248 is coupled to a pawl 250 having a point 251. The pawl 250 cooperates with an angled lever 252 pivoting at 253. This lever comprises arms 254 and 255. The point 251 of the pawl engages the end part of the pawl. arm 254 and is arranged to slide past the arm 254 when the pawl 250 has been rotated by a determined angle counterclockwise by looking at FIG. 31.
The arm 255 engages a finger 256 of an arm 257 integral with a handle 258. This handle is urged to the right by looking at the fi. 31 by a spring 259, while the arm 255 of the angled lever is biased to the left by a spring 260. The handle 258 controls a valve 262 comprising an inlet pipe 263 and an outlet pipe 264. The latter is connected to the valves. side forming blocks 209 and 210.
Valve 262 can be opened momentarily by moving handle 248 to the left (Fig. 31). In this case, the pawl 250 is moved upward and moves the handle 258 to open the valve 262 for a short time. After tip 251 has slipped past arm 254, return movement of pawl 250 is permitted by spring 260 yielding. The time of opening of the valve 262 relative to the valve 246 and the duration of opening of the valve 262 can be adjusted by varying the effective length of the tip 251 and the arm 254.
The side forming blocks can be constructed as shown in Figs. 33 and 34. In the embodiment shown in fi-. 33, a lateral forming block 210a comprises teeth 268. The latter are parallel to the neckline of the shirt and disposed on the part of the block which comes into contact with a part of the neckline of the collar. The teeth 268 thus cooperate with the fabric of the liner and prevent the liner from sliding upward as the blocks are pulled apart to stretch the liner.
In the variant shown in FIG. 34, a side forming block 209a has a portion 269 metallized to provide a rough surface. Metallization can be obtained by covering the block with metallic particles or other particles, for example by vaporization. In this variant, the surface due to the metallization is rough in all directions. The variant of FIG. 33 is different in that it allows the collar to snap into place on its own while preventing it from sliding up.
It is understood that the variants shown in FIGS. 33 and 34 may include the vapor discharge means shown in FIG. 32. It is also evident that the two side forming blocks can be similar.
The blocks shown in FIGS. 33 and 34 may include individual heating means, for example electric. These heating means can be mounted in the bases of these blocks, or else both in the blocks and in the corresponding bases. The block shown in FIG. 33 may have vapor discharge openings similar to those shown in FIG. 32.
In the variant shown in FIGS. 26 to 29, the machine comprises a front forming block 272. The latter may or may not be mobile and may be fixed in the same way as the side block in the embodiment and the variants shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 to 25.
In addition to the front forming block, the machine includes supports 274 and 275 for the neck tips on either side of the front block. These supports are wing-shaped trays (Fig. 26) and have portions 277 extending downwardly from the block to be attached to the latter. These supports can be fixed by bolts, for example, and can include means for adjusting their height and shape. Thus, for example, mounting holes can be lengthened to allow these brackets to be adjusted to any desired position and then strongly secured.
A backing tape 278 is provided for the buttonhole strip of the shirt. It includes a support part 279 which can be bolted to the base of the front block.
The iron 218 for the exterior of the rear portion of the neck is not necessarily used in conjunction with pressure plates associated with the side forming blocks. Fig. 9 shows three pressure plates for the iron shot from the inside of the rear part of the neck. While iron 218 is preferably used with such a pressure plate construction, it will be understood that only two overlapping pressure plates can be used, or only a fixed plate such as plate 103 of FIG. 9, or else do not use any pressure plate.
However, it is preferred to use pressure plates on both sides of the neck at the back of the latter if a 218 iron is used on the outside.
It is understood that the electrical switching device shown in FIGS. 23 and 24 can be applied to the variants shown in FIGS. 26 to 29.
