Folding chair The present invention relates to a folding chair, comprising an outer frame forming the backrest and the front legs, and an inner frame forming the seat and the rear legs of the chair.
It is characterized in that the inner frame is articulated on a transverse axis of the outer frame, a removable locking means of the transverse axis being intended to prevent said axis from moving axially, and at least one elastic band being stretched, d 'on the one hand, between the upper cross member of the backrest and the transverse articulation axis and, on the other hand, between the anterior cross member of the seat and said articulation axis, all so that said band constitutes the support surfaces of the backrest and the seat, thus removing the upholstery of the chair, and by rotating the inner frame around the transverse axis by folding the seat against the backrest, the chair when folded is reduced to its smaller footprint.
The accompanying drawing, given by way of example, shows an embodiment of the folding chair, object of the invention, and a variant of the means for locking the transverse axis. Figs. 1 to 3 are general views of the unfolded chair, of which fig. 1 is an elevational view; fig. 2, a plan view of FIG. 1, and fig. 3, a side view.
Figs. 4 to 6 are detail views, of which FIG. 4 is a partial vertical section of one end of the transverse axis; fig. 5, a cross section, taken along the line V-V of FIG. 4, and fig. 6, a section of the stretched strip forming an element of the file, along the line VI-VI of fig. 5. FIG. 7 is a side view of the folded chair.
Figs. 8 and 9 show a variant of the means for locking the transverse axis, of which FIG. 8 is a vertical section, and FIG. 9 a cross section, taken along the line IX-IX of FIG. 8.
The embodiment shown com takes an outer frame 1 (fig. 1 to 3), provided with a transverse axis 2 on which is articulated an inner frame 3. Each of the lateral uprights 4, 4 'of the frame 1 and lateral uprights 5, 5 'of the frame 3, has the general shape of an L at an obtuse angle, the axis 2 which passes through said uprights being situated in the vicinity of the apex of the obtuse angle.
The backrest frame is formed by the axis 2 and by the upper parts of the uprights 4, 4 'of the frame 1, the upper ends of which are interconnected by a cross member 6. The lower parts of said uprights, interconnected by a cross member 7, form the front legs 8, 8 'of the chair. The frame of the chair seat is formed by the axis 2, and by the front parts of the uprights 5, 5 'of the frame 3, the front ends of which are interconnected by a cross member 9, the rear ends of said uprights, re linked between they by a cross member 10, forming the rear legs 11, 11 'of the chair.
Inside the backrest and seat frames are stretched elastic bands 12 and 13 of ellipsoidal section, as shown in FIG. 6, made of synthetic material, for example polyvinyl. The strip 12 is stretched and rolled at regular intervals around the sleeper 6 and the axis 2. The strip 13 is stretched and wound at regular intervals around the cross member 9 and the axis 2, the windings in turn of axis 2 of bands 12 and 13 being altered, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 4 to 6.
The method of fixing, for example by screws, the ends of the elastic bands 12 and 13 on the crossbars 6 and 9, as well as the arrangement of their windings on said crossbars can vary depending on the material used for making said bands and the dimensions of these.
This alternative arrangement of the bands 12 and 13, forming the backrest and the seat of the chair, makes it possible to easily fold the frames 1 and 3 against each other to reduce the size of the chair, as shown in FIG. 7. In this folded position of the chair, the rear legs 11, 11 'abut against the cross member 7, while, in the unfolded position of the chair, it is, on the contrary, the uprights 5, 5' of the frame of the seat which rest on said tra verse 7, as shown in FIG. 3.
At each of its ends, the axis 2 is provided with a removable means, intended to prevent expensive its axial displacement. This means is constituted by a conical pin 14 (Figs. 4 and 5), intended to penetrate into the axis 2 in the vicinity of the uprights 5, 5 'of the inner frame 3. In addition, two washers 15, freely mounted on the 'axis 2, are interposed between the uprights of the inner and outer frames, to facilitate the maneuvers of unfolding and folding the chair. In a variant, the locking means is constituted by a screw 16 (fig. 8 and 9) formed by a frustoconical head 17, provided with a slot 18 for handling the screw and a lower part 19, in the shape of a threaded cone.
This screw is interposed between the uprights of the inner and outer frame in axis 2 which is ta raudé for this purpose.
The folding chair could be fitted with armrests, such as the armrest 20, shown in phantom in FIGS. 1 and 3, these armrests being fixed to the front face of the back uprights 4, 4 'respectively, and oriented pa rallel to the seat uprights 5, 5' respectively.
In the embodiment shown, the constituent elements of the folding chair, excluding. elastic bands, are made of wood. The chair could also be made of light metal, for example aluminum.
It is obvious that the elastic bands, stretched between the crossbars of the backrest and of the seat and the articulation axis, can be of different widths. In a variant, a single elastic band could constitute the backrest and the seat.
Among the advantages of the chair described and shown, mention should be made of the elimination of the usual padding of both the seat and the backrest. In addition, the material used for making the elastic bands allows them to be colored and coated with prints in the form of ornamental designs.
