Installation for shaping a curved element in synthetic thermoplastic material
The present invention relates to an installation for shaping a curved element in synthetic thermoplastic material, comprising an injection machine arranged so as to feed a die having a discharge opening of the same section as said element to be shaped, characterized in that said opening is formed in a wall having a different thickness on two opposite sides of this opening, so that the resistance offered to the passage of said material, due to friction, is greater on one side than on the other of the opening and that , therefore, the shaped element exiting the die is curved towards this first side.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a view in axial longitudinal section of the die.
Fig. 2 is an end view, according to arrow A in FIG. 1, of this sector.
Fig. 3 is a partial view in axial section of a thin-walled tube having a stiffening flange formed from a section shaped using this die.
The installation comprises a machine for injecting a synthetic thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride, having an injection pot (not shown) on which is mounted a die 1 comprising a tubular body 2, a plate 3 pierced with an opening 4, and a retaining ring 5 assembled to said body by four studs 7 provided with tightening nuts 6.
The body 2 has a threaded end 8 intended to be screwed into the injection pot, and which is pierced with an axial bore 9, of circular section, which has a slightly converging upstream part connected to a cylindrical downstream part 10.
The plate 3, which has a peripheral flange 11 resting on the end face of the body 2, is fitted by means of a cylindrical part 12 in the downstream part 10 of the bore 9 of the body 1. The opening 4 formed at its center has a constant cross section, generally rectangular in shape, with a groove 13 of substantially square section formed on one of its short sides (see FIG. 2).
As shown in fig. 1, the upstream 14 and downstream 15 faces of the plate 3 are both plane, but inclined with respect to each other in a direction parallel to the major axis of the opening 4 such that the plate has a thickness crescent from left to right along the longitudinal axis 1616 of the opening 4, its thickness being greater on the small right side having the groove 13 of the opening 4 than on its small left side (fig. 1 ). The plane of the downstream face 15 of the plate is, moreover, perpendicular to the axis 18-18 of the die.
The installation works as follows
The plastic material compressed and heated beforehand to be brought to the pasty state, coming from the injection pot (not shown) and moved in the direction of arrow B in FIG. 1, fills the compression chamber formed by the bore 9 of the die and it is forced through the shaped opening 4 made in the plate 3 of the latter.
Due to the greater thickness of the plate on the right side than on the left side of this opening, the resistance due to friction offered to the passage of the material is greater on the right of the opening than on the left and the 'shaped element shown in dotted lines at 17 in FIG. 1 is of the same straight section as the opening 4 and comes out of the latter directly with a pronounced curvature in the direction of the right.
By using a screw extruder as an injection machine and the die shown, it is possible to shape from polyvinyl chloride granules, directly to the desired radius of curvature, a curved profile intended to constitute stiffening collars for a tube such as that shown partially in FIG. 3. In this tube, the collar shown at 17, which is interposed between two sections of tube, is constituted by a turn of a helical element shaped directly to the desired winding diameter using the die and received on a drum, this coil being brought into a plane and welded in a loop to form the collar before being incorporated into the tube.
The die shown has made it possible in particular to obtain without difficulty, for an extrusion temperature of around 190 ° C., hard polyvinyl chloride shells having the section of the opening 4 and a radius of curvature less than ten times the height h opening (fig. 2).
In variants, the faces of the plate 3 could be other than flat. Roundings could also be provided at the upstream mouth in order to facilitate the passage of material.
