La fig. 3 est une vue en coupe suivant la ligne<I>11I-111</I> de la fig. 1.
La fig. 4 est une vue en coupe suivant la ligne<I>IV-IV</I> de la fig. 2.
Gas <B> Lighter </B> The present invention relates to a compressed gas lighter. In lighters of this known type, the pressure relief of the compressed gas is achieved by means of pressure relief devices generally multiple or with successive actions. These expansion devices do not allow, in practice, to achieve a sufficiently precise and regular gas flow rate adjustment to obtain, during each ignition, a flame of the same length. In addition, during the rest times, gases pass through the tensioning devices, so that the channel connecting these positive devices to the burner contains, after a long period of non-use of the lighter, compressed gas at a relatively high rate. .
It follows that, when the bri quet is lit, it first of all exhibits a very long flame which drops rapidly.
Furthermore, one of the main drawbacks of the known lighters using liquefied compressed gas lies in the fact that liquid fuel enters the pipes intended for the passage of gases only, and obstructs them. To overcome this drawback, most manufacturers stuff the fuel tank with a porous or fibrous material such as cotton.
By then introducing into this reservoir as much as possible the quantity of combustible liquid that the stuffing material can absorb, any possibility of introducing liquid into the pipes of the lighter is avoided, but, on the other hand, the quantity of combustible liquid can be absorbed by the stuffing corresponds to only a fraction of the volume of the tank. In addition, filling a reservoir filled with an absorbent material is always delicate.
The present invention relates to a bri quet of the type cited and which differs from known bri quets by the fact that it comprises, between the reservoir and the burner, a device for expanding and adjusting the gas flow comprising a member. shutter whose position, which determines the gas flow, is a function of the atmospheric pressure and the gas pressure downstream of this member.
The attached drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the lighter according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view thereof with parts seen in section.
Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view taken along line 11-I1 of FIG. 3.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line <I> 11I-111 </I> of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line <I> IV-IV </I> of FIG. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view of a variant.
The lighter shown comprises a body 1 surmounted by two walls 2 (only one of which is visible in FIG. 1). A cover 3 is pivotally mounted on an axis 4 carried by these walls 2. The lower part of the body 1 constitutes a liquid fuel tank 5 bounded by a wall 6 having an orifice 7 allowing the gas to exit.
The upper part of the body 1 contains a device for reducing and adjusting the gas flow. This device is fitted inside a block 8 fixed inside the body 1 and resting on the wall 6. A sealing washer 9 concentric with the orifice 7, connects the latter to an orifice calibrated 10 opening into a recess 11. A piston 12 slides freely in this recess and carries a shutter member 13. A spring 14 acting on said piston tends to hold the shutter member, consisting of a pellet of flexible and elastic material, such as only rubber, applied to the calibrated hole 10.
The piston 12 has a diameter slot 15 in which is engaged the end 18 of a lever 16 capable of oscillating on a pin 17. This end 18 is in contact with an adjustable stop 19 secured to the piston 12. This lever 16 is arranged in a chamber 20 in connection with the recess 11, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, with a chamber 21 sealed by an elastic membrane 22.
A piston 23 sliding in a guide 24, arranged in a stopper 25, having an orifice 26, is subjected to the action of a spring 27 tending to keep the lower surface of the piston 23 in contact with the elastic membrane. A pusher 28 inserted between this membrane and the other end 29 of the lever 16 transmits to the latter the movements of the piston 23.
The recess 11 is connected with an ori fice 30 by a channel 31 (see FIG. 4). This ori fice opens into a channel 33 provided with a pellet 32 of porous material pressed on a base 36 by a screw 34. The latter has longitudinal grooves 35 for the passage of the gases supplying a burner 37 formed by a channel. The channel 33 opens into a recess 38. A washer 39 having a free bore 40 is clamped between a nut 41 and an annular seal 42 resting on the bottom 43 of the recess 38.
The nut 41 has a recess 44 and a guide 45 traversed by the chimney 46 of a burner constituted by a piston comprising an axial channel 37 and two radial bores 48. This piston carries a pellet 49 of flexible and elastic material and has a shoulder 50 on which rests one end of a spring 51 tending to maintain the patch 49 applied to the calibrated bore 40. The bottom of the recess 44 is provided with a seal 52 on which the other end of the spring 51 which thus com prime the seal 52 so as to close the clearance existing between the guide 45 and the chimney 46. The cover 3 is provided with a disc 53 which, in the closed position of the cover, covers the end of the the fireplace.
The hinge axis 4 of the cover comprises a finger 54 cooperating, when the cover is opened, with a lever 55 oscillating along an axis 56. This lever is provided with a fork 57 partially surrounding the chimney 46 and co operating with a collar 58 integral with this chimney.
Finally, the lighter is provided with a tube 59 enclosing a pyrophoric stone (not shown) applied by a spring pressure device on a wheel 60 pivotally mounted along an axis 61 carried by the walls 2. The device for spring pressure (not shown), of known type, is housed in tube 59 and is supported on a plug 62.
The operation of the lighter described is as follows: when the cover 3 is held by its spring (not shown) in the closed position, the pellet 53 closes the end of the chimney 46. The spring 51, acting on this chimney, maintains the pellet 49 in the closed position (position shown) on the calibrated hole 40.
Further, the springs 14 and 27 are calculated so that when an overpressure of, for example 1 atm. maximum, prevails in the channel 31 and in the chamber 21, the shutter member 13 is applied to the calibrated orifice 10 and completely blocks the gas outlet.
Thus, when the cover 3 is in the closed position, no accumulation of pressurized gas can take place in the channel 31.
When the user opens the cover 3, the finger 54 causes the lever 55 to oscillate, the fork 57 of which, cooperating with the collar 58, lifts the chimney 46 against the action of the spring 51. Therefore, gas can escape from the channel 31 through the orifice 30, the pitch of porous material 32, the grooves 35, the calibrated bore 40, the recess 44, the bores 48 and the channel 37.
By actuating the knob 60, the user causes the ignition of the gas jet escaping from the chimney. The channel 31 is supplied with gas coming from the reservoir 5 via the expansion device and the flow rate regulator. Indeed, as soon as the pressure prevailing in the channel 31 decreases, the pressure in the chamber 21 likewise decreases, so that the thrusts of atmospheric pressure and of the spring 27 become preponderant and cause, by through the lever 16, a displacement of the cylinder 19 against the action of its spring 14. Consequently, the shutter member 13 rises and gas can escape from the reservoir 5 to the channel 31. The admission of gas is automatically adjusted by the expansion and adjustment device as a function of the pressure prevailing in chamber 21 and of atmospheric pressure.
By tightening or loosening the cap 25, the user has the possibility of modifying and fixing the gas flow rate at will for a given atmospheric pressure.
The tests carried out with a lighter equipped with the device for reducing and adjusting the flow rate described have shown that the latter meets all the requirements imposed and that in particular the flame of the lighter remains absolutely stable. It has been found, in particular, that the pressure in chamber 21 is entirely independent of the pressure prevailing in the tank and that, therefore, the lighter provides an equal flame until the last drop of combustible liquid has evaporated.
Fig. 5 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the device described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 4, in which the piston 12 also carries a closure member 63 located inside the reservoir 5. This member cooperates with the lower face 84 of the unit 8. The closure member 63 closes the outlet gas when, for some fortuitous reason, the piston 12 is moved too much against the action of the spring 14. In this variant embodiment, the gas flow is therefore limited to a maximum flow rate. In addition, in the event of an accidental rupture of the membrane 22, the member 63 closes the channel 10 and prevents any escape of gas.
The reservoir 5 is also provided with a positive filling device (see fig. 1). The compressed, liquefied gas is generally sold in flasks or small bottles 64 of standardized volume and shape and closed by a valve 65 consisting of a cone applied by the pressure of the gas, on the conical walls 66 of the neck 67 of the bottle.
The filling device comprises a shutter member 69 applied by a spring 70 to a seat 68. This shutter member 69 is mounted on a rod 71 sliding in a guide 72 and an extension 79 of which passes through and emerges from a filling channel 73 con centric to the seat 68. This channel 73 opens into an inlet 74 provided with a sealing ring 75 which, when filling the lighter, cooperates with the end 76 of the neck of the bottle 64. To fill the reservoir 5 of the briquet, it suffices, after having removed a stopper (not shown) closing off the inlet 74, to introduce the neck 67 of the bottle 64 into this inlet.
By exerting a thrust A on the bottle, the end 76 of the neck is applied to the annular seal 75 thus ensuring the seal between the reservoir and the bottle with respect to the outside. In addition, this thrust opens the shutter member 69 against the action of its spring 70, then, when a shoulder 77 of the rod 71 bears on the front face 78 of the guide 72, the extension 79 of the rod 71 pushes the valve 65 against the action of the pressure prevailing inside the bottle. From this moment, the liquefied compressed gas escapes from the bottle and flows through channel 73, a chamber 80 and orifices 81, into the reservoir 5.
When the bottle is removed, the valve 65 and the closure member 69 automatically and hermetically close the bottle 64 and the reservoir 5.
One of the advantages of the lighter described resides in the fact that the entire expansion and flow rate adjustment device is mounted in a block 8 still carrying the chimney 46 of the burner provided with its shutter member @ 49. Thus, these various devices and components can be assembled in the form of a partial assembly, tested and adjusted before mounting in the body of the briquet. A single sealing member ensures the seal at the location of the seal between the reservoir 5 and the block 8.
Other embodiments are possible.
