Process for the production of 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid The invention relates to a process for the production of 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid.
According to a known process, 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid is obtained by heating 2,5-dichlorocymol with nitric acid to 190 in a closed tube.
According to the invention, benzene, formaldehyde (or paraformaldehyde) and chlorine gas are allowed to act on one another in the presence of water and zinc chloride and the resulting intermediate product with a high chlorine content is saponified. To carry out the reaction leading to the inter mediate product, carbon tetrachloride and dichloromethane can be used as solvents, with temperatures of z. B. about 50-60 come into question, which can then slowly be increased to 70-80 ge. The intermediate product is a compound with a high chlorine content of the following constitution:
EMI0001.0008
which changes into 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid after treatment with saponifying agents.
The process according to the invention has the advantage that it can work in the liquid phase without pressure and with easy-to-produce starting materials; yields of up to 60% were obtained.
The product is suitable as an intermediate product for the manufacture of plastics. Example 2 45.5 g of aqueous formaldehyde solution (40% strength) are added to a suspension of 50.4 g ZnC12 in -17.0 g of benzene over the course of 6 hours ) allowed to drip. After about 11/2 hours of Cl2 introduction, complete solution occurs. The reaction temperature is 50.
After the clearly dissolved reaction mixture has been worked up, a colorless crystalline product which melts at 150 is obtained which is 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexachlorodimethyl-2,5-dichlorobenzene. This substance, which contains a lot of chlorine, is saponified in the reflux condenser to give 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid (melting point 305 to 307).
Example N On a mixture of 17 g benzene, which is dissolved in 120 g carbon tetrachloride, and which also contains 54g paraformaldehyde and 50.4g zinc chloride are allowed to slowly add 75 cm3 of water while heating to about 50-70. At the same time, chlorine gas is used in an amount of 20 liters per hour. initiated.
After a reaction time of about 5 hours, the reaction mixture is poured onto ice, a colorless, crystalline substance being obtained which, after being washed with water and recrystallized from methanol, has a melting point of 150. This intermediate product, which contains a lot of chlorine, is treated in excess with sodium hydroxide solution on the reflux condenser, with 2,5-diehlorterephthalic acid being formed. This has a melting point of 305-306.
Example 3 The same approach as in example 2 is used. Instead of carbon tetrachloride, the only solvent used is dichloromethane. In addition, the water is not added drop by drop, but directly. After a 5-hour reaction, the reaction mixture is filtered off with suction, washed out and recrystallized from ethanol. The result is white crystal needles with a melting point of 148. The substance, which contains a lot of chlorine, is saponified with sodium hydroxide solution on the reflux condenser.
The result is 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid, which has a melting point of 306-307.
