Clamping device for logs The present invention relates to a clamping device for logs, more particularly intended for use on machines for sawing said logs.
Such devices are already known, designed to grip logs laterally intended to be sawn and comprising clamping members making it possible to move the log along a rectilinear path, without said log being able to pivot around its longitudinal axis. In these known devices, the members, arranged in pairs, are however controlled individually, which complicates the installation and makes it difficult to lift the log relative to the carriage.
The device which is the subject of the present invention overcomes such drawbacks, the clamping members of the same pair being controlled by means of a common mechanism. Despite this unique mechanism, the device maintains the log at its initial height relative to the cart throughout the sawing operations.
Another advantage of the device which is the subject of the present invention is the great speed of maneuver to lift the log from the carriage and its extreme simplicity, hence the impossibility of malfunction; this very simplicity ensures maneuvering possibilities by any unqualified person and a low cost price in the realization of the device.
According to the invention, the clamping device for logs, in particular for gripping logs on a sawing machine, of the type comprising two clamping members of said log, guided so as to be able to move, without being able to turn, by relative to a frame of said device, is characterized in that one of said clamping members is arranged so as to be integral with the longitudinal movements of a rotary control rod which comprises a threaded portion engaged with an internal thread of the another clamping member and which is free to move axially, during tightening, in the direction going from the first mentioned clamping member to the second,
a certain clearance being provided between said clamping members and said frame to allow the blocking of these members on the frame.
The device can advantageously comprise, in addition, complementary retaining members to lock the rod in the position it occupies when the clawing is effective, so as to oppose a subsequent downward movement of the rod. 'rod-clamping unit assembly.
The device may also include an or gane for immobilizing the upper clamping member on a cage, when the latter is in engagement with the rod.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, several forms and variants of execution of the device, object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view - with cutaway - of one embodiment of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side view.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1 of a variant of the device showing a member for immobilizing the upper claw.
Fig. 4 is a side view of another embodiment of the device.
Fig. 5 is a view of a detail of FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the device of FIG. 4.
Fig. 7 is an elevational view of a third embodiment of the device.
As shown in the drawing, the positive device comprises in principle a carriage 101 (FIG. 4) supported by crossbars 2 which, according to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, constitute the actual carriage, provided with rollers 3 rolling on rails 4.
In fig. 1 and 2, the carriage is provided with several transverse supports 4a. Chairs 5, which can move on dirty transverse slides 6, in any known manner, support the gripping members of the log G by means of longitudinal members 7 and 8.
Each gripping device comprises, in the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a frame 10 in the form of a cage which is fixed to the longitudinal members 7 and 8, preferably in an adjustable manner in height, for example (see fig. 2) by means of brackets 11 and locking screws 12.
In the cage 10 are guided vertically, without being able to rotate, an upper claw 13 and a lower claw 14. For this purpose, for example, each of them is secured to a bar, 13a or 14a, transverse to the vertical sides of the cage 10 and engaged by its two ends in vertical slots 15 arranged in said sides.
The upper claw 13-13a has an internal thread 13b by which it engages with a threaded part 16a, of a vertical control rod 16, while the lower claw 14-14a is freely traversed by this rod, but is made integral of its axial movements, for example by means of a shoulder 16b of the rod and a ring 17 attached and pinned at 18.
The rod 16 freely passes through the upper base 10a of the cage 10 and, at rest, that is to say at the start of each clipping operation, the device formed by this rod and by the two claws is supported on a fixed part which here consists of the bottom 15a of the lights 15 on which then rests the bar 14a of the lower claw 14.
The rod 16 is therefore free to move axially, during the clawing operation, in the direction going from the lower claw towards the upper claw. This rod is rotatably driven by any suitable means. In the embodiment shown, it has been assumed that its driving is done, for example, by a simple crank 19 wedged at its upper end.
The operation of the device is as follows. The rod 16 is rotated, by means of the crank 19, in the direction of unscrewing its threaded part 16a. The weight of the rod-lower claw assembly being greater than the weight of the upper claw, the rotation of the rod 19 in the direction indicated has the effect of lowering, towards the log G, the upper claw 13, the lower claw remaining motionless.
When the said upper claw having penetrated somewhat into the log, the resistance to the descent of this claw will have become greater than the weight of the lower rod-claw assembly, the rod 16 and the lower claw 14 will begin to worm. and the latter will in turn enter the log.
When its penetration is such that the log would tend to be lifted, a fraction of the weight of the log will be added to the weight of the lower shank-claw assembly and, therefore, with the rotation of the shank 16 continuing, the upper claw will be able to outline a new downhill course which will have the effect of making it penetrate deeper into the log and perfecting the scoring. The continuation of the rotational movement of the screw therefore has the effect of 11, The clamping of the log by the two claws.
21, The jamming or blocking of the claws on the cage thanks to the play of which it was mentioned previously.
When the sawing operations have passed the middle part of the log, it will no longer rest on the transverse supports 4. The tendency which the log G would then have to descend is counteracted by the effect of the blocking of the claws on the cage 10. We can see a complementary member for retaining the height of the log (fig. 1, 2 and 3). This member is constituted by a pawl 20 integral with an operating handle 21 and able to pivot on an axis 22 to be put, at will, either in the retaining position where it is in engagement with notches or teeth 23 of the rod 16, or in a rest position where it is released from this toothing.
This pawl 20 can be engaged with the teeth 23 at the start of the clawing operation, which is possible since this pawl cannot oppose the upward movement of the rod during the clawing. It can be seen that the weight of the rod-claw-log assembly can, if necessary, be additionally supported by the nose of this pawl 20 engaged in the teeth 23.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 7, where the same references designate the same members, it is the lower claw 14 which is provided with an internal thread 14b engaged with a threaded portion 16a1 of the rod 16, while the upper claw 13, freely traversed by this rod , is mounted between a shoulder 16b1 of the latter and an added ring 171.
As, in this embodiment, the rod 16 will be brought down during the scratching, instead of going up, provision is made for it to pass freely through both the upper base 10a and the lower base 10b of the cage 10 , and to arrange, between the rails 4, a pit 24 'allowing free longitudinal and transverse movements of the lower part of this rod.
The operating handle 211 of the pawl 20 is here located on the opposite side, but the role of this pawl is the same as in the case. previous. However, it cannot be put into gear until dogging is complete.
As before, initially, the support of the assembly formed by the rod and the two claws is provided by the bottom 15a of the slides 15 on which, at this time, the bar 14a of the lower claw 14 rests.
The operation of this form of execution is as follows. The rod 16 is rotated in the direction of the screwing of the threaded part 16a1, which determines. first, the descent of the shank and the upper claw 13, then, secondly - once the claw 13 is anchored to the log - the ascent of the lower claw 14 which in turn comes s 'anchor on the log, and, thirdly, a slight descent of the stem and the upper claw which completes the clawing. The locking of the claws is provided in the same way as in the previous embodiment. The log immobilization can be improved by tilting the pawl 20 to bring it into engagement with the notches of the rod 16.
According to another embodiment, the upper claw comprises on one of its faces a bracket 24 (fig. 3) which overlaps one of the uprights of the cage and which is pierced with a threaded hole in which the lug can be screwed. end of a tightening key 25.
The operation of this device is as follows: the log having been put in place, after loosening the key 25, the worm is rotated so as to obtain the approach of the claws. Before complete tightening and while the two claws have penetrated slightly into the log, the upper claw is immobilized on the cage by means of the tightening key 25. This claw then acts as a nut for the screw without end, the lower claw rises at the same time as the screw and this movement tends to complete the tightening by making the upper claw penetrate even more into the log. At the same time, and therefore, the latter is slightly raised above the carriage.
It goes without saying that any other organ could be provided for immobilizing the upper claw on the cage.
A member may also be provided to allow vertical displacement of the claw-rod assembly. An exemplary embodiment of a device comprising such a member is shown in FIGS. 4 to 6.
As shown in these figures, the device according to the present invention in principle comprises a carriage consisting of a platform 101, supported by crossbars 102 and provided with rollers 103 rolling on rails 104.
Chairs 105, which can move on transverse slides 106, in any known manner, support a device for gripping the log G.
The gripping device consists of a vertical frame 108, integral with the chair, in any known manner, and supporting a worm 109 pivoting freely in the upper part of the frame.
The vertical frame 108 also supports a vertical slide 110 described in more detail below and on which can slide supports 111, 112 of claws 113, 114, adjustable in depth in their respective supports, in any known manner and not shown. ty to the drawing. The support 111 is threaded in its center and cooperates with the thread of the worm. The support 112 is traversed freely at its center by the worm and made integral with its axial movements, for example by means of a ring 115 pinned to the lower end of the worm and penetrating substantially into the support. 112 bored in 116 for this purpose.
The rotation of the worm, held at its upper end in the upper part 117 of the vertical frame by means of a ba- P a e 118 pinned at 119, is effected by means of of an electric motor 120 integral with a beam 121 forming part of the upper part of the frame 108 and whose rotation, which can be controlled in both directions by means of a switch 120a, drives, by means of belts 122, drive pulleys 123, the bore of which has a projection penetrating into a longitudinal groove 124 extending over the worm over its entire length.
The slide 110 has at its upper part a narrower part and having teeth to constitute a rack 125, by interlocking with a toothed pinion 126 integral with an axis 127, free to rotate in supports 128, 129, integral with the vertical frame. A control lever 130, integral with said axis, moves in front of a sector 131 integral with the fixed frame, pierced with orifices 132 and in which a key 133 can be inserted.
The operation of this device is as follows: the log having been brought on the carriage, the claws being sufficiently separated from each other and the slide 110 being in its lower position, the motor is rotated in such a way that its rotation drives the upper claw 113 downwards. On contact with the log, the upper claw stops. The support 111 acts as a nut for the worm. As a result, the screw rises, dragging with it the lower claw which, in turn, comes into contact with the log. Continuation of the movement of rotation of the visa for combined effects 1 0 The clamping of the log by the two claws.
20 The wedging of the claw supports on the slide thanks to the play which was discussed previously.
The switch 120a is acted on to stop the motor as soon as the jamming is sufficient. By then maneuvering the lever 130, the rotation of the pinion 126 is commanded, which causes the slide 110 to rise. The key 133 then being pressed into the suitable hole 132 to serve as a stop for the lever 130 which tends to move. under the effect of the weight of the log, it is lifted from the carriage and remains in the position shown in fig. 4.
It can be seen that this device makes it possible to proceed with the sawing of the log without fear that the latter will descend when the sawing operations have gone beyond the middle part of the log and have reduced its diameter.
