Process for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride It has been found that partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol is a good emulsifier for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride, alone or with other polymerizable monomers, with a water-insoluble catalyst in aqueous methanol.
This was surprising because other colloids which can be used as emulsifiers in the polymerization in water, such as glue and gelatin, fail in the polymerization in aqueous methanol. Partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohols with soaping numbers of about 30-400 are particularly suitable, with substances having higher. Saponification numbers are generally more favorable.
Mixtures of polyvinyl alcohols with different saponification numbers can also be used. The partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol is expediently used in an amount of 0.05-0.5%, calculated on the vinyl chloride or monomers used.
According to the process according to the invention, easily plasticizable polymers without proportions that are difficult to plasticize can be obtained even at high conversions; Without the addition of partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol, emulsifier deficiency symptoms such as lump formation and concerns on the vessel walls occur.
The catalysts customary for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride can be used as water-insoluble catalysts, such as. B. Benzoyl peroxide, lauryl peroxide or 2; 4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide. The concentration of methanol in the water can fluctuate within wide limits. Solutions containing 30-40% methanol are particularly suitable.
Example 1 In a V2A-plated stirred autoclave with a capacity of 200 liters, 120 liters of 40% aqueous methanol,
1 kg of a 10% aqueous solution of a partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol with a saponification number of 120 and 150 g of lauryl peroxide are added. After the air has been driven off by nitrogen, 60 kg of vinyl chloride are added and the mixture is heated to 50 with stirring.
After 20 hours, the pressure drops and the autoclave is released. stretched and the fine-grained polyvinyl chloride formed was separated from most of the liquid phase by centrifugation or suction. After drying, an easily plasticizable polyvinyl chloride with a K value of 72 is obtained. In the absence of methanol, under the same experimental conditions, a polyvinyl chloride that is very poor in plasticability is obtained.
Example 2 The process of Example 1 is repeated, a partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol with a saponification number of 300 being used as the emulsifier and 100 g of benzoyl peroxide serving as the catalyst instead of lauryl peroxide. The K value of the fine-grained polyvinyl chloride obtained is 71.
The polymer can be plasticized at a roller temperature around 7.5 lower than a polymer produced under the same conditions but without the presence of methanol. Example 3 According to the procedure of Example 1, using 30 kg of vinyl chloride and 30 kg of vinyl acetate, a copolymer is produced which consists of particles 0.05-0.5 mm in diameter.
This mixed polymer is also easier to plasticize than the same product that was produced without the addition of methanol.
