Appareil horaire.
Time apparatus. The manufacture of photoelectric cells is now very easy and their application generalized in many fields. In some of these applications, the light energy is collected and transformed into electric current. This is the case, for example, of a light integrator formed with the aid of a photoelectric cell supplying a motor in conjunction with a counter train.
This is also the case with certain clocks in which energy is supplied by a photoelectric cell.
The substitution of electric winding for manual winding is a well-known fact in watchmaking. The spring of the clock is, for this purpose, charged by a motor supplied, generally, by the electricity distribution sector. The current of a photoelectric cell can very well be substituted for that of the sector, but, given that the energy brought into play is very low, certain arrangements are more particularly advantageous. The present invention relates to a time apparatus of this nature.
A photoelectric cell or a group of photoelectric cells provides very little energy; it is therefore useful that this energy is used to the maximum. This will be the case if the motor has good efficiency and if its starting threshold corresponds to low current üotensities, and therefore to low illumination.
According to the invention, a motor is used having low passive resistances, characterized by a pivot axis of the rotor arranged vertically; the lower tip of said axle is preferably pivoted in a hard material such as sapphire and thus starting of the motor can occur for currents below 100 microns -amperes.
It is advantageous to use the clock face as a photoelectric battery; in this case, the photoelectric cell therefore has the size of the dial and is pierced with a hole to allow the axes of the switch to pass; it receives the inscriptions of the minutes and hours.
As the energy supplied is relatively low, it should be spent sparingly, that is to say, the clockwork movement should be provided in such a way that its regulating member dissipates little. For this purpose, it is advantageous to provide a regulating member in which the oscillating system moves in a horizontal plane, that is to say that the axis of the balance is vertical, the frequency of this oscillating system being low, at most equal to two second periods.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example and schematically, embodiments of a time apparatus according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a very schematic sectional view of a first embodiment in which the axes of the escapement are horizontal.
Fig. 2 shows in a similar fashion a clock in which the axis of the escapement is vertical.
Fig. 3 is a section similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 2, of a clock in which all the axes of the clockwork movement are vertical with the exception of the timing axes and in which the motor is made in a special way, to be extra: flat.
Fig. 4 shows in plan the magnet forming one of the elements of the stator of the motor shown in FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 shows in section the rotor of the engine of FIG. 3.
Fig. 6 schematically shows in perspective an advantageous arrangement for the attachment end of the spring in the ball.
Fig. 7 shows the shape of the winding and unwinding curves for a spring thus attached and for a spring of ordinary type.
In fig. 1 is shown a commutator motor of the type of those which are. used in meters at. direct current. This motor comprises a vertical axis 1 established in light alloy and terminated by a point or by a ball which rests in a sapphire frame 2. The axis 1 is integral with a rotor formed by a coil 4 of the frame type and devoid of any support other than the insulating impregnation product.
The ohmic resistance of this coil is chosen such that it is of the same order of magnitude as the. apparent resistance of the cell which constitutes the photoelectric cell for low illumination (of the order of a few hundred Lux) in order to remove the maximum amount of energy from said cell. The winding 4, in the form of a bell, is inserted by its edge into the narrow air gap of a stator 3. This stator comprises one or more permanent magnets and cores showing the appropriate poles.
The axis 1 which passes through the central part of the fixed magnetic core in a perforation, carries a reader neck 5 made of precious metal, this collec tor being in contact with brushes 5a connected by conductors to the terminals of the. photoelectric battery.
To allow the transport of the clock and so that it is not. not damaged by vibrations, there is an advantage in providing an elastic suspension for the slider 2. This suspension can. be constituted by a spring 6 whose tension is adjustable. For transport, it is also advantageous to provide a device for locking said rotor using a lever applying under a solid part of said rotor. rotor.
Whatever the method of assembly envisaged for this safety device, which may comprise either an elastic bearing, a locking bearing or both, the effect of shocks and vibrations must be transferred outside the pivot point. definitely.
The axis 1, at its upper part, pivots in a bearing 7 provided with a counter-pivot 8. A pinion 9 integral with the axis 1. transmits the movement of the rotor to a wheel of field 10 fixed on the first axis 1.1 of the winding demultiplier gear train which ends at the axis of the usual barrel of the clockwork movement 12. This barrel transmits. the torque of the spring in turn to the exhaust which, in the case of fig. 1., is, a horizontal axis escapement.
The barrel comprises a known differential screw and nut device (not shown) intended to mechanically stop the motor when the spring is almost completely charged. This device operates a lever 13 connected to. the movable nut on the threaded rod to the barrel shaft, this lever 13 wedge- carrying a fork to. its free end, said fork coming to rest under a shoulder 14 of the axis 1 to lift the latter and apply it with friction under the counter-pivot. 8.
Such an engine, because of its. low inertia and its pivoting device, works for very low intensities of the electric current supply. With such an arrangement, the starting threshold is less than one hundred micro-amps and experience shows that it is possible to obtain starting for less than fifty micro-amps.
The photoelectric cell supplying the bays is formed by the dial 15 of the clock, the sensitive surface being turned towards the exterior. The current is transmitted by silver contact blades. These slats can be combined with the inscriptions and numbers on the dial.
The dial is perforated in its center to allow the central axis and the barrel (s) carrying the hands 16 to pass.
The clock shown in fig. 1, has a single field wheel 10 since the exhaust has a horizontal axis.
The clock shown in fig. 2, est. for view of an escapement holder, 17 located horizontally, that is to say that the axis of the balance is placed vertically. In this case, or being the field wheel 10a., The clockwork gear comprises a second field wheel 18 returning the movement to the escapement if killed in the escapement holder 17.
Such an arrangement makes it possible to have greater amplitudes, all other things being equal, and makes the regulating organ insensitive to the effects of gravity.
In fig. 3, a variant is shown which makes it possible to have the balance axis vertical by using only one field wheel. For this purpose, the axis of the motor and all the axes of movement. clock 19 are vertical and timer 20 is controlled by a field wheel gear 21.
The motor comprises an armature 4a without iron, in the form of a disc. This armature 4a comprises three coils 4b in the form of circular segments, offset by 120 from each other, made so that their active conductors, which intersect the lines of force of the stator field,
are as developed as possible. These coils are connected to the collector 5b with three blades on which the bays 5c bear. The coils 4b are coated in a thermoplastic or thermosetting insulating material to give the rotor the minimum bulk and inertia, compatible with sufficient rigidity.
The armature 4a is placed between a magnet 3a in the form of a flat disk magnetized diametrically and a disk 3b with high magnetic permeability. It could be placed between two magnets of the same type arranged with theirs. poles of opposite names face to face.
The rotor of this motor is mounted on pivots like a watch axis, which allows it to operate in all positions. The arrangement with a vertical axis is nevertheless more advantageous.
For this purpose, the ends 1a of each axis called pivot turn in a pierced ruby 2a. The axial play is limited by another ruby 2b called counter-pivot. These iubis can be mounted with an impact protection device of a known type.
A locking device 13 immobilizes the rotor by pressing on a bearing surface 14 when the spring is fully wound up.
This motor construction allows the constitution of autonomous time devices of small footprint.
In all cases, the average energy supplied by the motor over a fairly large period of time must be greater than the energy expended by the regulating members and the friction through the gears and the barrel. We see, in this way, that the power reserve can be chosen at will for the same engine.
If a very large power reserve is desired, the reduction gear between the motor and the spring must be provided with a very large ratio and the multiplication gear between the barrel and the escapement is also at high multiplication ratio. . Conversely, if we are satisfied with a low power reserve, the same ratios may be low.
In general, there is an advantage in choosing a power reserve high enough to take account of dark periods and ensure the correct functioning of the clock, even after a prolonged period of darkening (case of a room closed for a period of holiday).
In order to have high operating safety, it is useful for the energy dissipated by the escapement and the balance to be very much less than the energy supplied by the engine. A device that meets this condition can be made by choosing a frequency lower than that used in watches and, for example, two periods per second or less.
It is particularly advantageous to use a pendulum suspended with torsion wire And at low frequency. Although this device is mechanically complicated, it has, on the other hand, the advantage of requiring only very little energy, in particular by the absence of pivoting and of not requiring any lubrication.
It is also advantageous to provide on such a clock an escapement blocking device put into action during periods of transport or storage. This way the. large power reserve, easily obtained by simple means in the factory, small being almost entirely preserved until the time of actual commissioning.
To avoid any mechanical transmission with low efficiency in the winding gearbox, it is necessary to adopt straight gears for the latter. It is essential to provide a retaining mechanism which ensures that the winding is maintained.
This retaining ineanism consists of a ratchet wheel and a ratchet, to have a very sensitive and easy to handle eliquet, it is advantageous to provide the ratchet wheel on one of the first elements of the reduction gear. and, for example, a ratchet wheel 22 on the input axis 7.1 of the reduction gear. This wheel 22 is associated with a pawl 23 established, for example: under the; shape of an elastic melle.
As in all self-winding clock movements, it is advantageous to obtain maximum arming and disarming torques as close together as possible. This is achieved by providing for a particular mounting of the spring attachment flange in the barrel. For this purpose, the end 24 of the reserve spring is not wet and the beveled flange 25 is hooked 26.
fixed on the leaf spring by a rivet. 27 in the event that the flange is not. not weldable or by a spot weld otherwise. The distance from this rivet or weld point to the free end of the spring is at least equal to the length of the flange. This arrangement provides variations in torque as a function of the number of winding turns, the rate of which is shown on the curves of the frg. 7.
The winding torque varies according to curve A plotted on a diagram whose axis OX is graduated -in number of turns and axis OY in value of coupled.
The unarming curve provided by such a device is the regular curve D approximately parallel to the curve A and not showing. no sensitive dulations. The ordinate of the point a re presenting the maximum arcing torque is very close to the ordinate of the point cl representative of the unarming torque. In this way,
the irregularity in the torque supplied by the spring does not exceed the ordered key difference of points a and d. With an ordinary spring, on the contrary, the point dl is situated much lower and the irregularity of operation in automatic winding is often considerable. From phis, the.
curve Dl re showing the variations in torque of an ordinary spring hooked on by the 5 @: conventional arrangements during decommissioning offers large undulations which are also a source of marked irregularities.
The regularity obtained by the flange device described above is due to the fact that the non-wet end 24 of the spring. rests on the wall of the barrel, prevents tilting of the flange and compensates for the eccentricities taken by the spring during the unwinding period.
