La fi-. 7 représente le mécanisme indi cateur de temps séparé du mécanisme divi seur de temps par l'enlèvement de plusieurs vis d'assemblage 89 représentées aux fig. 2 et 3. Il est avantageux que les ouvertures prévues dans la plaque arrière 61 et les ouvertures dans? Tes parties;

We will first describe the embodiment shown at fis. 1. The fis. 1 is not drawn to scale and the elements are not assembled in the special arrangement that they will have in a practical execution, this figure presenting, so to speak, a purely schematic view of the elements constituting the chronometric device, the unimportant parts, such as bearings, etc., which have been omitted.
On the fis. 1, the axis 1 of the balance wheel is supported in a vertical position and to this axis is fixed a spiral spring 2, one end of which is connected to an anchoring member 3. The axis 1 also carries an oscillating member 4 forming a wheel: with pendulum.
This organ ,. which is preferably not polarized, but which is made of a magnetizable metal of high permeability and, of a practically negligible coefficient of thermal expansion, such as 3.6% nickel-steel, comprises a part bottom 5 carrying two arched circumferential raised shoulders 6 and 7 diametrically opposed to each other. The two shoulders 6 and 7 form with the bottom 5, which is hollowed out. this effect, two peripheral notches 8 and 9 on the. balance wheel for: a purpose which will be explained later.
The device also comprises an electromagnet with electromagnetic control coils 11 and 12, the pole pieces 13 and 14 of which are arranged very close to the jectory of the rim of the balance wheel 4. Each of these pole pieces is machined so that a projecting tenon 15 cooperates with the shoulders 6, and 7 of the balance wheel, while a part facing the horizontal end cooperates with the bottom 5 of the. balance wheel. in a manner which will be fully explained later.
The balance shaft I carries a plurality of propeller pitch elements 17 and 18 extending partially around the axis and which are arranged to cooperate with a star wheel 21 fixed on a shaft 22 which carries at its opposite end an endless propeller 23. The latter meshes with a helical wheel 24 fixed to a shaft 25 which also carries a toothed pinion 26. The toothed pinion 26 coo. father with a toothed wheel 27 fixed to a shaft 28, the free end 31 of this shaft being arranged to carry a minute hand or other indicator member (not shown). .
The shaft 28 further carries a pinion 32 which cooperates with a toothed wheel 3.3 fixed to an auxiliary shaft 34. A toothed pinion 35 is fixed to the end of the auxiliary shaft 34 opposite the toothed wheel 33. and meshes with a toothed wheel 3,6 provided with a barrel 37 freely mounted on the shaft of the minute hand 28. The barrel 37 is arranged to carry the hour hand, if desired, the reduction speed is thus obtained by the gear train comprising the auxiliary shaft 34.
A pair of contact members 40 and 41 is arranged so as to cooperate with the spiral spring 2, the contact member 40 being connected to, one pole of a current source 43 and the other contact member. being connected to the other pole of this current source. For the description of the operation of this positive device, it will be assumed that the pole first mentioned is the positive pole and the second pole is the negative pole, although this particular arrangement of the polarity is not essential.
One terminal of a capacitor 44 is connected to the negative pole of the battery 4.3, and the other terminal of the capacitor is connected to a terminal of the coil 11. The coil 11 is connected using a conductor 45 to the. coil 12, which, in turn, is connected by a conductor 46 to the anchor member 3. As indicated by the member fragment 47, the anchor member 3 as well as the conductor 46 can be fixed on the frame (not shown) which supports the different parts of the mechanism.
The contact members 40 and 41 are supported by a movable adjustment member (not shown) which enables them to be angularly adjusted within determined limits around the axis of the balance wheel.
The spiral spring 2 is chosen so as to mpress on the balance wheel 4 the desired period of natural oscillation. In order to maintain the oscillations, it is necessary to subject the balance wheel to properly timed nagnetic pulses.
To this end, the contact members are arranged such that the contact member 40 makes electrical contact with the spiral spring 2 when the latter relaxes as a result of the oscillation of the. balance wheel 4 in the direction indicated by arrow 49, and that the contact member 41 establishes electrical contact with the balance spring 2, at a determined time during the oscillation of the balance wheel 4.
Each contact establishment takes place as the balance wheel approaches the middle of its swing stroke, while the notches 8 and 9 of the balance wheel are about to face the pole pieces of the coils (so-called "central" position of the notches or "neutral" position of the polar shoulders 6, 7).
For the understanding of the operation, we will first assume that the , balance wheel sorrel in the direction of arrow 49 and that its notches are located at. momentary position mentioned above. The spiral spring 2 then makes contact with the external contact member 40 and an electric current passes from the positive pole of the battery 43 through the contact member 40, the spiral spring 2 and the coils 12 and 11 to charge the battery. capacitor 44.
The winding direction of the coils 12, 11 is such that the charging current gives one pole piece a polarity which will be assumed to be North, and the other a South polarity, the magnetic circuit being completed by a piece of base of nuclei (not shown). By the time the magnetic field is established, the notches of the balance wheel 'have slightly exceeded the central position with respect to the pole pieces, the end 48 of the shoulder 6 is attracted more by the pole piece 13 than it is. end 51 of the opposite shoulder 7.
The end 52 of the shoulder 7 is also attracted more by the pole piece 14 than the end 53 of the shoulder 6 so as to subject the balance wheel 4 to an impulse which tends to make it move more quickly. in the direction in which it was moving when the magnetic field was established.
During the half-period of oscillation of the balance wheel just described, the propeller pitch element 18 of shaft 1 has come into engagement with one of the teeth of toothed wheel 21 and 'has advanced in the direction indicated by arrow 54 in a path proportional to the pitch of said element, thereby imparting motion to the gear train of the clockwork movement.
It will now be assumed that the balance wheel has described a rotational movement up to the limit of its trajectory in the direction indicated by arrow 49, and that it is in the process of returning in the. opposite direction due to the stored energy in the spiral spring 2.
At a certain time determined during the reverse oscillation, the contact will be broken between the spiral spring 2 and the outer contact member 40 by the fact that the spiral spring 2 is now tightening radially. A moment later, when the notches 8 and 9 of the. balance wheel 4 are again placed in front of the pole pieces, the spiral spring 2 is in contact with the internal contact member 41, allowing the capacitor 44 to discharge through the windings of the coils in a direction opposite to. that of the charging current.
This current discharge imparts to the pole pieces 13 and 14 the opposite polarity posed to the previous one, respectively, and the magnetic field acts on the ba lancer wheel in the above-described manner, but in the opposite direction. The rate of the magnetic pulse is adjusted so that the balance wheel is forced to keep its oscillating movement in the direction of rotation that it had when the momentary contact was established between the internal contact member. and the spiral spring 2.
During the reverse movement of the axis of the balance wheel, the thread element 17 engages with the toothed wheel 21 and imparts to the latter a rotational movement in the same direction as the movement. which was imprinted on it by the idle screw element 1-8 during the first half-period of operation. This second rotational movement is transmitted to the gear train and also to the indicating means in the same way as the first movement.
By arranging the balance wheel and the pole pieces with their special shape as shown in the drawing, the magnetic field of the pole pieces exerts its action both by the projecting tenons 15 of the pole pieces cooperating with the raised shoulders 6 and 7 of the balance wheel, only by the horizontal parts 16, pole pieces cooperating in a similar manner with the base 5 of said wheel, When contact is established between the spring spring 2 and the external contact member d-0, during the By oscillation of the balance wheel in the direction indicated by arrow 49, the capacitor 44 receives a full charge.
When, therefore, the contact is broken between the spiral spring 2 and the contact member 40 during the reverse oscillation, there is no contact tension and, therefore, no contact occurs. 'tin that. There is also no spark that occurs at the moment when the internal contact member 41 touches the spiral spring 2 so that the capacitor can be discharged, as a circuit is established by the electromagnetic coils .
On the other hand, at the instant when the spiral spring 2 leaves the internal contact member 41, the capacitor has completely discharged and therefore no stopping will occur. For this reason, the contact members as well as the spiral spring can be made of a metal which could not be used in the previously known devices because of the excessive formation of sparks at their electrical contact points.
As has been explained, the energy consumption of a chronometric device constructed according to the arrangement described is extremely low.
As a very small force is enough poi to stop the movement of the oscillating member, it is advisable to provide moyei to en3p prevent the transmission of the least: movement to the shaft 22 during an adjustment, needles. For this purpose, we have provided the helix 23 and the. helical wheel 24 between the gearbox operating the needles and the primary movement part of the device. This non-reversible gear arrangement prevents transmission of movement from the shaft 31 to the shaft 22.
The neck electric contactor mechanism taking the contact members 4 (i and 4.1 E the spiral spring 2 is practically without influence, the amplitude of movement between the contact points thereof being small and 1 resistance of the spring to the bending being insignificant, so that the mechanism requires an invaluable energy for its control. Thanks to the elimination of the inertia in the electric contactor mechanism and to the,
reduction of friction in all the moving parts of the device, we obtain a device which can be operated continuously with a minimum of energy.
The capacitor 44 and the neck source 43 are chosen and dimensioned with respect to the size of the control coils, 11 and 12 so that the entire mechanism consumes only the quantity of energy necessary to overcome the mechanical losses. In a practical execution, the condenser: 44 has a capacity of two microfarads and 1 <battery has a voltage of 22 volts.
It can be shown mathematically that when a two microfarad capacitor is charged and discharged once per second by a 22 volt battery, the average energy consumption is less than 0.001 Watts. This proportion of charge and discharge is maintained in the embodiment described above and the battery will therefore continue to supply energy for a period of time substantially equal to its actual life.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 2 to 8 and in particular in FIG. 7, the time indicating part of the device comprises substantially the same members as those shown in FIG. 1. A back plate 61 and a face plate 62 are assembled parallel to each other by means of a number of spacer pieces 63 arranged between them, cap screws 64 passing through openings in the plates and entering the ends of the distance pieces. The shaft of the minute hand 31 passes through an opening in the faceplate 62 and a reduced portion of it is seated in a small borehole in the backplate 61.
The toothed wheel 27 is fixed on the shaft 31 between the two plates, and the toothed wheel 32 is also fixed on this shaft in the immediate vicinity of the outer face of the front plate 62.
The toothed wheel 36, which is provided with the barrel 37 to carry the hour hand, is mounted loose on the end of the shaft 31 and meshes with the free wheel 35 placed on the shaft 34 which is rigidly mounted in an opening in the faceplate 62. The toothed wheel 36 is prevented from sliding down the shaft 31 by a washer 66 attached to the shaft 34 very close to the toothed wheel 35, the washer being held by a pin 67 which passes through an opening in the end of the shaft 34. The toothed wheels 33 and 35 are integral with one another, the movement being imparted to the wheel 33 by the wheel 32.
The shaft 25, which carries the toothed wheel 26 meshing with the toothed wheel 27, has one of its ends mounted in a borehole in the face plate 62, while the other end, on which the wheel 24 is fixed, is housed in an insert 68 of the back plate 61.
The shaft 25 is extended towards the rear; as shown so that the wheel 24 comes into meshing relation with the corresponding helix when the time indicating and time dividing parts are assembled.
The primary motion or time division portion of the device has an upper plate 70 having a raised front edge 71 and a lower plate 2 having a downward facing front edge 73, the two plates being held parallel to each other. the other by means of several distance pieces 74, 75 and 76, in the opposite ends - which are screwed fixing screws 77 passing through holes of the plates 70 and 72.
The upper plate is made of non-magnetic material, while the lower plate is made of steel, iron or other metal having sufficiently high magnetic permeability.
The axis 1 of the balance wheel is supported between adjustable bearings 79, screwed into the upper and lower plates, respectively, the members being held in the adjusted position by d.es clamping nuts 80.
A movable plate 81 of insulating material, such as bakelite or the like, is rotatably mounted on an upwardly extending portion of the upper pad 79 and is held in position by the clamping nut 80. A washer elastic is interposed between the tightening nut 80 and the insulating part 81 in order to prevent inadmissible wear of the latter and to keep it by friction in its position.
The contact members 40 and 41 are mounted on an extension 82 of the insulating part 81 and are directed downwards through an opening 83 in the upper plate 70 in operative relation with the spiral spring 2. The opening 83 is sufficiently large. wide to allow sufficient angular movement of the contact members with respect to the axis of the balance wheel in order to be able to modify the active length of the spiral spring, as is usually done for adjustment. The contact members therefore serve both as adjustment means for adjusting the period of oscillation of the balance wheel 4 and for establishing the electric circuits previously described in connection with FIG. 1.
The outer end of the spiral spring 2 is fixed with the aid of a pin 84 to a part 85 fixed to the underside of the upper plate 70.
The parts 13 and 14 are provided with threaded holes at their lower ends and are held in position between the upper and lower plates by means of screws 86 passing through openings in the lower plate 72 and screwed into the threaded openings at the ends. lower pole pieces.
The balance wheel 4, which is fixed on the axis 1 immediately below the spiral spring 2, has a diameter such that its shoulders 6 and 7 are spaced from the projecting tenons 15 of the pole pieces 13 and 14 with a set of 1 , 5 mm or less, this play is not critical.
The control coils 11 and 12 are freely mounted on the respective pole pieces, one end of their windings being connected to the frame as shown in FIG. 1. If the device is to be able to withstand severe treatment, these coils are preferably provided with means to prevent axial movement with respect to the pole pieces so as not to disturb the oscillating movement of the balance wheel.
A short rod 87 is mounted vertically to the base plate 72 by means of a screw 88 which passes through an opening in the base plate and is screwed into a threaded opening in the lower end of the rod. This rod is provided with a transverse opening in which is mounted one end of the shaft 22, the other end of the shaft being supported in an opening of the distance piece 76.
The toothed wheel 21 is mounted on the shaft 22 near the rod 87 and arranged to engage with the propeller pitch elements 17 and 18 on the balance shaft 1. The propeller 23 is fixed on the shaft 22 near the wheel 21 and serves to transmit the movement to the gear train constituting the time indicating part of the device.
The magnetic circuit for the control coils comprises the base plate 72, the pole pieces 13 and 14 and the oscillating balance wheel 4. The latter member is not polarized and therefore receives by induction a polarity which causes its attraction towards. the pole pieces, whatever the momentary polarity of the latter.
In fig. 7 and 8, the subdivision of the device can be seen more clearly into a time divider mechanism and a time indicator mechanism, each of which can be manufactured separately.
The fi-. 7 shows the time indicating mechanism separated from the time dividing mechanism by the removal of several assembly screws 89 shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. It is advantageous that the openings provided in the back plate 61 and the openings in? Your parts;
perpendicular 71 and 73 of the support plates 70 and 72 are placed in an exact position, since the assembly of these parts brings the helical wheel 24 into engagement with the propeller 23. Obviously, small differences are permissible, - 1a (admissible distance between the predefined positions and the corresponding openings in the different plates being within the limits of the usual machining tolerances.
By establishing the device's time indicator and time divider mechanisms as separate and individual units, a can greatly reduce the cost of splitting and assembling. The parts shown in fig. 7 do not require the same degree of precision as those shown in FIG. 8 and, consequently, one had to entrust their manufacture to experienced workers corners.
For this reason, the time division mechanism of the device is set up to be supported in a separately manufactured frame and the time indicating mechanism is also arranged to be separately supported. It goes without saying that any given time indicator mechanism can be used with any given time delivery mechanism.
The manufacture of: separate units can therefore be entrusted to different factories and for the assembly of the complete device it is sufficient to arrange the openings in the plates in the exact position to allow the insertion of the bolts assembly.
As shown in fig. 9 and 10, the propeller pitch inserts 17 and 18 are circumferentially erroneous and have a circumferential groove 90. When the axis 1 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow, a part inclined) 1 of the element 181 comes into contact with one of the teeth of the toothed wheel 21 and imposes on the latter a movement in the direction indicated by the arrow 54. When the tooth is advanced by a distance equal to the division of the inclined face 91, it passes over the left surface of the element 18 without further advancement until the end of the oscillation is reached.
In the meantime, the element 17 has performed a sufficient rotational movement to bring an inclined part in operative rotation with one of the other teeth of the wheel 21 and when the reverse os cillation occurs, said tooth passes over the surface 92 and on the left face of element 17, remaining there until the completion of the reverse oscillation.
The toothed wheel 21 thus receives a rotational movement equal to the division of one of the propeller pitch elements during a half-period of oscillation of the balance axis. A l The instant one tooth of wheel 21 is taken by the inclined end of one of the propeller pitch members, wheel 21 can freely move in the space where the opposite member is interrupted. During the time that a tooth passes over the face of one of the elements, the annular groove forms a passage for the preceding tooth so as to prevent a collision of the latter with the oscillating movement of the axis.
The relationship between the propeller pitch element 17 and 18 and the impeller 21 as the propeller pitch element 18 is engaged with a tooth of the impeller is shown more clearly in FIG. 10 which is a section taken along the line X-X of FIG. 9.
It is not absolutely necessary that the propeller pitch elements 17 and 18 be executed as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, a modified form being shown in FIGS. 11 and 12. The elements 17 and 18 can be replaced by elements 93 and 94 in the form of collars which are, for example, welded to the shaft. Each collar element is provided with a descending part 95 similar to the inclined ends of the elements shown in FIGS. 9 and 10, but given that they are very thin compared to the teeth and between the teeth of the wheel 21; it is not necessary to provide circumferential grooves 90.
The operation of the variant shown in FIG. 11 is practically the same as that of the means shown in FIGS. 9 and 10.
The device shown in FIGS. 13 to 16 includes a balance mechanism comprising a shaft 182, bearings 183 therefor, a balance wheel 184, a spiral or torsion spring 185 as in devices of this kind, a magnet 186 forming part of the oscillating balance and mounted on shaft 182, and a contactor mechanism 187.
The spiral spring 185 is connected at its inner end to a collar 189 of the shaft 1182 and at its outer end to a stationary member 190 and coo. father in the usual way with the ba lancer wheel 184 which oscillates with the shaft 182 around the longitudinal axis of the latter.
The contactor mechanism 187 comprises a movable contact spring 191 in the form of a spiral spring. The inner end of the spring 191 is connected to a collar or socket 192 on the shaft 182 and the outer end of the spring is provided with contact parts 193 for making contact with stationary contact parts 194 and 195. By this arrangement, the spring 191 moves together with the shaft 182 between the stationary contact pieces 194 and 195, but the outer end of the spring is held stationary, while that the remainder of this is wound up or unwound according to the degree of oscillation of the shaft 182 exceeding what is necessary to move the contact parts 193 between the stationary contact parts 194 and 195.
In this way, the excess movement of the shaft 182 is received by the elastic movable contact piece 191. When, in operation, the balance wheel 184 oscillates in the direction of movement clockwise. re keeping fig. 14, the contact part 193 comes into contact with the contact part 195 to complete a circuit by a conductor 197, the battery 108, the capacitor 106, the coil 180, the coil 124, the coil 181, the stationary part 190, the res out 185 and the shaft 182 to the spring 191.
During this operation, the magnet 186 is made to oscillate to bring its ends near the coils 180 and 181 so that when the aforementioned circuit is completed, the capacitor 106 is charged, the coil 124 is energized to actuate a mechanism. with advancing pawl (not shown) acting on the clock movement, and the coils 180 and 181 are energized to act on the magnet 186 and thereby on the balance wheel 184 in the same way in which the The electromagnet of the first embodiment acts directly on the balance wheel.
In the reverse direction of oscillation of the balance axis, the contact part 193 comes into contact with the contact piece 194 to establish a closed circuit by a conductor 198, the capacitor 106, spool 180, spool 124, spool 181, stationary 190, spring 185 and ('shaft 182 to spring 191. In this way, spools 180 and 181 are again excited during the discharge of the capacitor 106, to act on the magnet 186.
