Apparatus for cleaning the windshield of an automobile. The invention a. for object an apparatus for cleaning the windshield of an automobile, by spraying liquid on the sectors J) ala #, - é.s by the wipers.
The need for this operation is particularly evident when the windshield is still subjected to natural fog or to drops of water projected by the wheels of vehicles in front, or which are overtaking on wet roads, when all rain has stopped. '' supply the wiper blades.
[, the apparatus, object of the invention, is distinguished from the apparatuses which have been already created to fulfill this function, by a great simplicity, because it does not call to </ B> no electrical, magnetic or mechanical device, using the energy of the motor of the. car.
He is characterized by the fact that he. corner- takes at least Lin nozzles for each of said -sectors, each nozzle being intended to be placed to the exterior of the vehicle and being arranged so to </ B> produce a jet of liquid directed on a sector swept by a windscreen wiper, the nozzle being capable of receiving of ano displacements, in order to modify the direction of the jet </ B> coming out of the nozzle. It comprises, in addition,
a reservoir (the liquid fixed to the cover of the car-Read and. which feeds by gravity a pump, connected by a pipe to said nozzles. This CI pump comprises -an elastic cup whose bottom coiistitue -a diaphragm capable of being activated manually by successive pressures with using an actuator through the cover of the pump housing, so as to </ B> deform it perpendicularly to its plane.
The apparatus comprises, finally ,, retaining valves interposed, on the one hand, between the supply tank and the pump, on the other hand, between the pump and the nozzles.
In a particular form of execution, each nozzle can, for example, be constituted by an orientable spherical ball, forming a kind of ball-joint and pierced with a con, (diametrical luit for the passage of the liquid. This ball, maintained , on the one hand, by crimping wise in a suitable cap, rests, on the other hand, on a seat provided at the end of a tubular body. The check valve which opposes, in service, the return of water to the -d'upply tank, can be constituted by a ball that a spring applies to its seat.
For the positions of the nozzle, in which the diametral orifice is not in direct communication with the interior of the tubular body, notches can be made on the upper edge of this body, in order to allow, to </ B> the water to access to the inside of the cap which covers the nozzle and then to its orifice.
The accompanying drawing represents, to by way of example, one embodiment of the invention, comprising two nozzles. Fig. 1 shows, in section, the entire apparatus, FIG. 3 is a detailed plan view of the front face of the housing constituting the pump.
Fig. 2 is a diagram of the pipes arranged between the liquid reservoir and the nozzles.
Fig. 4 shows, in section, a variant of the device.
Fig. 5 shows, in longitudinal section, an embodiment of the nozzle.
Fig. 6 is a partial section to on an enlarged scale of the upper part of the nozzle shown at la. fig. 5.
Fig. 7 shows a collar for mounting the liquid reservoir.
In the arrangement shown in figure 1, under the hood of the vehicle is fixed a tank 1, preferably transparent, which contains water or other liquid to spray. From the bottom of this tank leaves -a flexible pipe 2; the connection between the tank and the piping is preferably fitted with a filter pad 3.
The pump body is formed by a housing 4, made of bakelite or other suitable material, which is located below the water level in the tank 1 and is thus under load.
The housing 4 is closed, on its face located on the side of the tank I., by a screwed cover .5, within the inside of which is housed an elastic cup of which, the background constitutes a menu 6, on which the driver of the car can. exert pressure with using a push button 7 which passes through the cover 5.
On the face of the box 4, opposite to the cover 5, are screwed: 10 A tubular nozzle 8 to which the piping is connected 2 coming from the reservoir 1. In this nozzle there is a valve with ball 9, whose seat is so arranged that it is closes when pusher 7 pushes back member 6.
211 One or two (depending on the expected number of jets) ajata.ges 10 similar to the previous one and poui-ais of to ball 11 elapets works in the opposite direction of the 9.
Each nozzle 10 is connected by -a pipe, 12 to a junction 13 fixed on the ca pot of the car and disposed at the outside of it in way to spray the seat on the area swept by the wiper.
Each gieleur a, pierced with a spray orifice 1.4, is screwed on a support ta raudé 15, applied against the 'cover, 16 by a washer 17 -whose position can be fixed at using a nut 18 moving on the pipe 19, </ B > which connects to pipe 12 and to the upper end of which the nozzle 13. is screwed.
As can be seen in the drawing, the two faces of the washer 17 are not parallel. It forms between the support of the nozzle 15 and the nut 18 a kind of wedge; it is thus possible, by rotating it, to vary Pangle et la within certain limits. jet height and, consequently, the nozzle sweep field.
The operation of the apparatus thus formed is as follows: The reservoir 1 being filled with water and the membrane 6 being at rest, the housing or pump body 4 is found powered by gravity, according to the principle of communicating vessels. If the driver exerts pressure on the mem brane 6 to using push-button 7, by bringing it to position 6 ' shown in dotted lines, the valve 9 closes under the effect of this pressure and the liquid is pumped back into the pipe 12, then to the nozzle 13 by removing the pet 11 from its seat.
If the driver releases the button 7, the valve. 11 is referned, opposing the reflux of the water from the pipe 12 to the housing 4, while the valve 9 opens to allow the liquid coming from the loaded tank 1 to replace the sprayed liquid by filling the pump body 4.
The driver can repeat the spraying of water on the, windshield as many times as necessary.
In the variant, shown in FIG. 4, at 1 is shown the liquid reservoir, generally water, supplying through a pipe 2, shown schematically, - a pump composed of a housing 4 and a cover screwed 5. A ]. The interior of this case is fitted - a 6 membrane in the shape of a bowl, arranged in an inverse manner to that of the previous embodiment-, that is to say that its concavity is turned towards the cover 5.
The deformations of the membrane are controlled by a zipper 16, provided with an operating button 17 and fixed by a watertight device, 1-8 in the center of the membrane 6, in such a way to allowing the membrane to be to back and forth movements.
The backflow of the liquid from the housing 4 to the tank see 1. is prevented by a valve with ball 9 placed in the fitting which joins the pipe 2 to the reservoir 1. As for the check valves 11., which oppose the reflux of the liquid from the gieleurs 13-14 to the housing 4, they are arranged in the jets themselves, the washer in the form of (the corner being always placed below the nozzle 13.
There is also provided a connection between the end of the. pipe 2 and the housing 4. The edge of this end of the pipe is folded inside the inside of the housing 4 and clamped by a tubular rivet 19 placed inside the case 4 and the edge of which is folded over that of the. driving 2.
This connection opposes the tearing of the pipe 2. An identical connection is established between the housing 4 and the ends of the pipes 12 which connect the. sprinkler pump.
There is shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 an embodiment of the nozzle.
The body 31 of the nozzle is a tubular part threaded to its upper part 36 and the, - quantity to </ B> its opposite end, to receive the plastic pipe coming from the supply tank. It also has a shoulder 32, which serves as a support < B> to an elastic ring 33, interposed between the body 31 which it surrounds and the inner lace of the cover 34. Another similar ring 35, also surrounding the body 31, is applied to the upper face of the cover 34.
These two rings together have a U section, straddling the edge of the cover (as shown). On the port 37, which makes the internal gravity of the body 31 communicate with the. liquid inlet pipe, rests a ball valve 38 which a spiral spring 39 tends to maintain on his seat. This spring may be, as has been shown, of a conical shape with turns of increasing diameter at from the cla pet 38. A shoulder can also be provided to serve as a stop to these turns.
The attachment of the nozzle body 31 on the cover is carried out by a nut 40 screwed onto the thread 36. This nut has the shape of a sort of spherical cap, the upper part of which has a central opening 41 in which is housed a ball 42, pierced with a diametral channel 43 through which the jet of liquid exits.
Tightening the cap nut 40 has the double effect: 10 Securing the entire nozzle on the cover. 20 To apply the ball 42 on the seat formed by the upper edge of the body 31 with enough energy so that this ball forming a patella cannot move spontaneously, but can give way to an impulse transmitted to using a pin inserted into the jetting channel 43 to give it such orientation as you want.
To allow the water to access channel 43 in all its positions, notches or crenellations 44 are made on the upper edge of the body 31 closed by the ball 42. The water coming from the tank under charge passes through these notches and, entering the space 45 formed between the wall of the opening 41 and the surface of the ball 42, can gush out through orifice 43; its path is represented by the. arrow -46 (fig. 6).
The main advantages of this nozzle are to facilitate the adjustment of the water jets in height and direction on the windshield, without removing the constituent parts, and to allow it to be adapted to a bonnet key surface of any shape.
The thread#. 7 represents a collar which allows the water tank to be fixed to any inclination wall. The collar itself 17, arched at its ends drilled with appropriate holes 18 and 19, is tight, to imprison the tank not shown, with the aid of a bolt whose head 21 rests on the part 18 of the collar, while its end rec pit the tightening nut,
applied against part 19, with interposition of a washer 23.
On the bolt 20 are mounted symmetrically, inside the space between the branches 18 and 19, two horizontal brackets. 24 and 25, which are tightened on these a-Li branches by means of nuts 26 and 27, with the interposition of lock washers.
