Welding rod coating flux. The present invention, due to M . René D. Wasserman, relates to a coating flux (the welding rods used in hard welding with an electric arc.
The coating flows of such rods must have, in order to properly fulfill their functions, a whole combination of various properties. They must adhere firmly to the rod they are coating and melt at a predetermined temperature lower than that required for welding. (: The coatings usually contain ingredients intended to form a gas envelope around the weld, which envelope is used to remove oxygen and nitrogen from the air. They also contain products forming slag lice dissolve and float unwanted oxides which may pre-exist or form in the weld.
Still other ingredients can be used to regulate the flow of the metal composing the hard solder, to act as deoxidizers, to alloy with the metal of the weld or to stabilize the arc. The flux coating is thus intended to facilitate welding and to improve the metallurgical properties of the weld.
It has not been possible so far to prepare fluxes having to a sufficient extent all the required properties.
The invention, on the other hand, provides coating flows combining all the qualities required for these compositions. These fluxes greatly facilitate welding and improve the metallurgical properties of the solder, in particular thanks to the fact that they do not give rise to premature chemical reactions between components, reactions which can cause a loss of favorable properties to the metal. welding. In addition, thanks to improved coating properties, they ensure the formation of compact and uniform coatings in all atmospheric conditions.
The flow according to the invention is characterized in that it contains

As the carbonaceous material, graphite powder is preferably employed. The role of the carbonaceous material is to act as a reducing agent by generating carbon oxides which help to form the gaseous envelope protecting the weld during its formation. It has been observed that graphite is far superior to coal, charcoal and other carbonaceous materials because of its chemical inertness and its. High thermal conductivity combined with a low coefficient of thermal expansion.
The char and the charcoal tend to combine with the iron existing in the weld to form iron carbides which facilitate austenitic transformation by rapid cooling of its weld, which results in noticeable hardening of the weld. welding. Graphite has this tendency only to a very low degree and therefore allows the formation of relatively soft and very strong welds which are easy to machine. It is therefore preferred to use graphite powder or, at the very least, to use graphite for the major part of the material because it is good. Graphite has already been used in certain soldering fluxes, but never yet in fluxes containing the aforementioned ingredients in the proportions indicated.
The fluxes in accordance with the invention contain silicon powder calibrated 80 to 120 mesh, - that is to say in relatively coarse form. The silicon should promote slag float and fluidify the flow during welding. Finely pulverized silicon, as used until now in large quantities in the streams, is unacceptable here because of the extremely harmful effect of the phenomenon known as gassing which occurs. of the. reaction, in the presence of air, between the silicon and the soluble silicate used as binder.
The extent to which this reaction can take place depends mainly on the total exposed surface area of the silicon particles and it is evident that the fine these particles are the larger the surface exposed to the reaction. A further disadvantage of fine particles is that they burn much faster for them. soldering and thus cause the loss of appreciable amounts of certain metal constituents of the alloy. Under the. fineness of 80 to 1.20 meshes, enough silicon can be used to exert a favorable effect without at the same time producing harmful effects.
The most important character of the flux according to the invention lies in the multiple presence of a wetting agent and an anti-foaming agent.
It is very difficult in practice to obtain uniform and compact coatings on electrodes, especially by the immersion process. The results of the coating are deeply affected by premature chemical reactions between the components, reactions favored by exposure to air, high temperatures and humidity.
Air bubbles frequently form on the surface of the coatings and give rise to irregularities in thickness and density of the coatings, which irregularities cause welding problems requiring the application. stronger currents and higher temperatures, all. to the detriment of the quality of the welds obtained.
It has been found that most of these difficulties can be overcome by adding to the flux both a wetting agent and an antifoam agent. It appears that the antifoam agent removes the occlusion of air in the coating material and that the wetting agent facilitates rapid formation of a uniform coating along the length of the rod. These favorable effects serve in turn to. minimize any premature chemical reactions and. thus promote the formation of denser and more adhesive coatings.
Whatever the correct explanation, there is no doubt that the. the simultaneous presence of small amounts of these two agents in the flow significantly improves the formation of the coating and the coated electrodes thus prepared and makes it possible to use together materials considered until now as incompatible.
The defoamers and wetting agents not only improve the coating operation. chopsticks, but their presence can have an effect. plasticizer on the finished coating making it less friable and less prone to chipping. Another advantage of the use of these agents is that they allow the coating paste to be prepared longer in advance and to be preserved without deterioration.
It is clear that the wetting agent and the antifoaming agent must be compatible with each other and with the other ingredients of the flux, i.e. they must not react with them. A few simple tests are enough to be sure. A suitable defoamer is, for example, 2-ethylhexanol. Small amounts of these products are sufficient; preferably 0.25 to 0.75 0 / o by weight (based on the total weight of the flow) of antifoaming agent and 0.01 to 0.05 0 / o of wetting agent are used lant. It is easy to determine in each particular case the optimum amount of these two agents.
The other ingredients entering into the composition of the flux according to the invention are folded or less usual, but the proportions adopted are not. The alkaline earth metal salts, preferably carbonates, have the task of stabilizing the arc, facilitating the formation of slag and producing the protective gaseous envelope. Heavy metal oxides are intended to facilitate the formation of slag. Deoxidizing ferroalloys such as ferro-chromium, ferro-silicon and iron-aluminum and man ganese-silicon alloys are intended to alloy with the metal forming the weld to increase its tensile strength and strength. tenacity.
Finally, the soluble silicate functions as a binder and also participates in the formation of slag.
To prepare the coating flow, the procedure is preferably as follows: The various dry ingredients are mixed together intimately and in powder form. It is appropriate to control the coarseness of the particles, in particular those of silicon as noted above The mixture is then stirred in a concentrated aqueous solution of soluble silicate.
A 30-32 Baumé sodium silicate solution in an amount sufficient to give is preferably used. preparing the required pasty consistency, which varies according to the thickness of the coating to be applied; in general, the dough is given the consistency of sour cream. This paste is applied to the hard solder electrodes by any suitable method, generally by dipping the electrode into the paste or by pushing the paste under pressure onto the electrodes. These operations can be repeated, if necessary, with intermediate drying, to obtain the desired coating thickness.
The coatings thus obtained are exceptionally united, compact and of uniform thickness; they are free from blisters, punctures and other defects.
The coating flux according to the invention can be applied to electrodes of various metals and alloys, such as steel, nickel, nickel alloys, bronze and. similar alloys, for welding a wide variety of metals and alloys such as cast iron, bronze, copper, tool steels, etc.
