Mold for centrifugal casting of metals. This invention relates to a mold for the centrifugal casting of metals, for example for the manufacture of cylinder linings, piston rings and other articles.
Molds for centrifugal casting ordinarily consist of a tube which is rotated around its axis at high speed while molten metal is poured against the wall thereof and transformed by centrifugal force into an extending sleeve. over the effective length of the bite.
It has been found that the mold is subject to damage as a result of ruptures occurring in its wall, particularly at the point of impact of the molten metal on the surface of the mold, resulting in cracking and splitting followed by scratching. In addition, since the damaged or scratched surface forms part of the clean mold, it is evident that metal will solidify in the scratches or crevices thus formed and, in the case of a one-piece mold, damage to the mold. The surface of the mold will worsen and expand when the cast sleeve, or the like, is removed from the mold by axially applied pressure.
The present invention aims. to eliminate this drawback.
The mold object of the invention is. characterized by the fact that it comprises a removable tubular member intended to form a casting surface for pouring molten metal into the mold.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, several embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation, partially in section, showing the end of a mold according to a first embodiment.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are similar views; -, showing other embodiments.
Fig. 5 shows a split mold for centrifugal casting.
As shown in fig. 1, the pin end of the mold 1 is provided with an extension 2 of suitable length, having a bore 3 phis larger than the bore of the mold, for receiving a tubular member 4 having a bore 5 of dimension smaller than the bore of the molding part. The tubular member 4 can slide in the bore 3 and abuts against a shoulder 6 at the end of the bore 3, so that the end 7 of the tubular member 4 forms an internal stop at the end of the mold, to prevent a backward flow of metal and to determine the end of the molding part.
The tubular member 4 is held in the bore 3 by means of a ring 8 having a flared opening 11, and fixed to the end of the protrusion 2 of the mold by means of screws 9, the ring 8 abutting against the outer 'end' of the tubular member 4. According to another embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the tubular member 4 may: have a bore 12 of conical shape, the inner end 6 of the bore having a dimension smaller than the bore of the molding part to be produced, while the outer end 15 of the bore is larger than the bore of mold 1:
To facilitate the introduction of the tubular member 4, the latter has a conical wall 13; on the other hand, it has a flange 14 at its outer end and is fixed to the end of the extension 2 of the mold, by screws 9.
According to another embodiment, shown in FIG. 3, the extension 2 of the mold has a bore forming a continuation of the bore of the mold 1, and the tubular member 4 has the shape of a sleeve, the bore 5 of which has a diameter smaller than the bore of the part. of molding to be produced. The tubular member has a flange 16 held against the protrusion 2 of the mold by screws 9.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the tubular member 17 has a flange 19 at its inner end, said flange 19 being applied against the end of the mold 1 and fixed thereto by screws 9 engaged in threaded holes 10. The bore 18 of the tubular member 17 is smaller than the bore of the molding to be produced.
In fig. 5, there is shown a slotted mold for the casting of sleeve pipes or the like.
A tubular member is placed at each end of the mold. At one end, there is an extension 22 having the shape of a cylindrical member and surrounding the attached tubular member 4. This member 4 may have a lesser hazard than that of the molding part to be produced; a stop ring 23 determines the end of the molding part. The other end 25 of the mold 20 carries an extension 24 and has an opening with a diameter greater than the bore of the mold. This extension 24 surrounds a tubular part 4 and maintains a tubular element 26 in said larger diameter opening of the mold 20.
This element 26 determines the internal diameter of the pipe sleeve. It can be seen that the casting of metal in the mold 20 can also be done through the extension 24.
It will be appreciated that in all of the embodiments described above, the deterioration of the mold wall due to the impact of molten metal on a rotating surface does not take place, the part subject to such deterioration. being formed by the easily detachable tubular member, with a view to its replacement or repair.
