Method of making plywood. The invention relates to a Ver drive me production of plywood, which consists of a plurality of flat, concave or otherwise shaped veneers that are ver connected to each other by a binder.
So far, the majority of plywood panels have been made from various types of fir wood and other soft woods, where the veneers have been glued under pressure after drying to a predetermined moisture content.
Such veneers are usually sown from a block of wood conditioned by steam or hot water by a well-known rotating or very pigeon-shaped cutting movement, the block being rotated with respect to a knife in order to obtain the maximum yield and veneers of the required constant width from the block. According to another well-known variant, the veneers can be produced by cutting the block lengthways.
The aforementioned pre-drying before gluing was always considered to be essential, since gluing in the moist state proved unsatisfactory because the moisture in the wood thinned the glue and prevented effective gluing.
A purpose of the present invention is to provide an improved method for the production of plywood, both from hardwood and from sapwood, which brings about a substantial saving in manufacturing costs. The improved method according to the invention for the production of plywood consists in pretreat the cut veneers while still wet before gluing with a dilute formaldehyde solution, which acts as a conveyor for the gluing,
and cover them while still wet with a casein-containing but formaldehyde-free adhesive zii, layer the veneers on top of one another and bond them to one another under pressure without heating.
The method is particularly suitable for hardwood, which is available everywhere in large windows, and provides harder and for certain purposes more durable plywood than softwoods.
The veneers used can be peeled or cut from the bloek, which has preferably been steamed or boiled in water as usual.
The veneers obtained in this way are inevitably wet. In the present case, wet is understood to mean veneers with a moisture content. of not less than 30 1 / o after steam or hot water treatment.
The cut veneers are then treated with a dilute formaldehyde solution, which in certain cases can also contain an easily hydrolyzable alkaline salt and / or a polyhydric alcohol or a mixture of polyhydric alcohols that act as softeners for the wood. It can be assumed that the alkaline salt neutralizes at least part of the resins and acids remaining in the wood and also emulsifies the natural waxes, so that the depth of penetration of the glue is increased.
Techniseber, z. B. 35 to 40% form aldehyde is preferably used in amounts of 0.3 to 1.5 percent by weight of the solution. This percentage can vary depending on the requirements and can be based on \? up to 20 parts by volume can be increased to 1000 parts by volume of water.
An example of a suitable alkaline salt is soluble sodium silicate, with. which excellent results are achieved. Other alkaline salts, such as borates, oxalates, carbonates can, but not with. the same success, be used. Some of the last-mentioned salts have limited water solubility at room temperature and in certain cases can crystallize again on the wood. Alkalihydro: Yyd can also be used, but only in concentrations that do not affect the wood. So you can z. B.
Use alkali hydroxide solutions that do not contain more than 1 to 5% alkali hydroxide.
Examples of suitable polyvalent alcohols are glycerine, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, sorbitol and the like.
The concentration of the alkaline salt in the solution can be between 2 and 20 percent by weight and; that of the polyvalent alcohol between 5 and 20 weight percent. The duration of the pre-treatment, e.g. B. by immersion, can be from just a moment to 20 minutes depending on the type and concentration of the Lö solution used.
The solution is preferably used cold, i.e. at room temperature, since hot formaldehyde solutions would easily evaporate, while a hot alkali solution could damage the wood. Instead of dipping the wood into the solutions, the latter can also be applied to the veneer by spraying or in any other suitable manner.
Excess solution is expediently removed in any suitable manner. You can z. B. by passing the veneers between rubber rollers, which remove most of the surface moisture, remove.
The application of the adhesive to the still wet veneers can be done in any suitable manner. As a rule, the adhesive is applied to both sides of the toe layers or the core and bonded. these with the outer veneers.
To avoid waste, the intermediate veneer or core consists of more than one piece of veneer. Up until now it was necessary to entrust experienced workers with the finite joining of the veneers, as it was necessary to join the core sections together in such a way that sufficient gaps were guaranteed for them to expand during the pressing. Errors in the distance between these core sections can lead to overlaps or gaps in the finished product.
In the present method, it is now possible, as shown, to abut the core sections against one another. Since all the kidneys are in the same moist state, there is no relative expansion between the parts, so that neither overlaps nor gaps can occur during pressing.
Another disadvantage of the earlier work method is that pieces of dry, brittle veneer can fall onto the binding agent of the core before the outermost veneer layers are applied. so that the finished product has unsightly bumps. The use of wet veneers also limits this possibility to a minimum.
Suitable formaldehyde-free casein adhesives are listed in the following examples. The numbers mean parts by weight

It is. known that veneers peeled from blocks have a so-called dense and loose surface. The dense area of a peeled veneer is that which corresponds to the outside of the block from which the veneer is peeled. The opposite face is called. one the loose area. When such a veneer is laid flat, the fibers in the dense area are compressed more than those in the loose area and therefore show much more pronounced warping or tearing.
In the usual production of plywood, the adhesive is always applied to the loose surface of the outer veneer. By reversing this procedure, which has been done for many years, it was surprisingly found that the adhesive firmly binds the compact dense side and thus minimizes the possibility of warping or cracking.
Any small cracks in the loose side of the veneer, which is now turned outwards, cannot easily be identified. Although these sides are called loose, their surface is comparatively hard. and can be sanded to achieve a smooth surface.
According to an embodiment that is especially suitable for hardwoods, the veneers cut from green Australian mountain stalk are dipped in a pretreatment solution that contains 0.3% technical formaldehyde (35 to 40%), 20% sodium silicate,
1 contains 5% glycerine and the remainder water. The wet veneers are then passed between rollers in order to squeeze off the excess solution, after which an alkaline casein glue is applied to the dense side of the still wet veneer, three layers are joined together and at room temperature and a pressure of 0.7 up to 2.8 kg / em2 pressed for 5 to 5 hours,
until the glue has set. The plywood obtained in this way is then dried at 43 to 49 C and then shows a surface that is practically free of visible cracks. The posture between the veneers was very good.
Very surprising results are achieved by pretreating the peeled or cut veneers while still wet with a solution containing formaldehyde. It can be assumed that the formaldehyde makes the glue more waterproof and also acts as an accelerator, so that the glue gels in a relatively short time and the moisture in the veneer does not impair the setting of the glue.
The gluing of the veneers when wet offers many essential advantages. The usual pre-drying with the time and work required. is switched off. In addition, through the effective control of the formation of cracks and sore eyes, relatively narrow pieces of filler can be used as an intermediate layer without undesired overlapping or crevice formation occurring at the abutting edges.
In certain cases it was surprisingly found that the invention can also be used with wood that has not been subjected to the usual steam or hot water treatment. In such cases, the veneers should have a natural smokiness content of at least 30 % .
In addition, the resins and acids present must be so strong that the aforementioned treatment with a 1 to \? 1 / o teelinisehen formaldehyde (30 to 40%) containing solution, this does not prevent the rapid coagulation of a casein glue if it is applied within half an hour after the pretreatment. Such wood is said to be in the green state.
If the wood does not meet these requirements, you have to. Pre-treat as usual with wet steam or hot water.
An example of an Australian wood that can be used in the "green state" is that of the crab apple tree, the white birch (Schizomeria Ovata) and the white ash.
It is understood that mechanical or vacuum presses can be used to carry out the method and that other measures can be modified in a manner familiar to the person skilled in the art. So should z. B. after applying the adhesives and the union of the veneers the Pres sen not later than after 40 minutes, if you want to achieve a good gluing.
