Monsanto Chemical Company, St. Louis (Missouri, U. S. A.M4:@y,Tr;!

Monsanto Chemical Company, St. Louis (Missouri, U. S. A.M4: @ y, Tr ;! A process for the preparation of a mixture of dichlordiphenyltrichlorethanes. La.
The present invention relates to an improved process for the production of a mixture of dichlordiphenyltrichloroethanes by condensation of trichloroacetaldehyde (chloral) and of chlorobenzene in the presence of concentrated or fmnant sulfuric acid, this process making it possible to obtain a commercial-grade dichlor-diphenyltrichlorethane. cial in which the value of the ratio of the 2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl) -1,1,1-trichloroethane isomer and the 2-o-chlorophenyl-2-p-ehlorophenyl-1,1 isomer ,
1-trichloroethane is significantly increased.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that one mol / g of chloral is reacted with an amount exceeding 2 mol / g of chlorobenzene in the presence of at least concentrated sulfuric acid, at a temperature below - i- 6 C.
Commercial dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is a mixture of isomeric compounds composed mainly of 2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl) -1,1,1.-trichloroethane, hereinafter referred to as the pp 'isomer, and of 2-o-chlorophenyl -2-p-chlorophenyl-1,1,1-trichloroethane, named isomer op 'in the following. This mixture is used on a large scale as an insecticide. Of these two isomers, however, the p-p 'isomer is the more important since it has a higher insecticidal activity than the o-p' isomer.
Since it is composed of a mixture of isomers, this product exhibits a wide melting range. The pure p-p 'isomer melts at about 180 ° C. and the crystallization point or solidification point of the mixture is an approximate measure of its content as the p-p' isomer. It is desirable to prepare a mixture of commercial dichlordiphenyltrichlorethanes having as high a crystallization point as possible so that, due to its high p-p 'isomer content, it exhibits superior insecticidal activity.
Until now the commercial mixture of dichlordipb.enyltrichlorethanes, hereinafter referred to as dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane, was generally prepared by condensation of chloral and chlorobenzene using sulfuric acid and / or oleum as condensing agent at temperatures between 10 and 40 C, or by using hydrofluoric acid as the condensing agent and carrying out the reaction at a temperature between 20 and 85 C. Commercial dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane obtained by these processes has a crystallization point between 88 and about 92 C.
The p-p ′ isomer content of this product is generally less than 75 1 / o, this value being determined by analysis by means of infrared absorption spectra. Although numerous modifications of these processes have been proposed with a view to obtaining better yields of commercial dichlordiphenyltrichlorethane, none of these modifications made it possible to obtain directly.
an increase in the value of the ratio between the p-p 'isomer and the o-p' isomer. Consequently, to obtain a commercial dichlordiplienyltri-chloroethane exhibiting an increased pp 'isomer content, it was necessary to operate indirectly, by recrystallizing the commercial dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane in a suitable solvent. It is avoided. However, such a detour is inconvenient and uneconomical, since the excess of op isomer is discarded instead of its formation being suppressed during the condensation reaction.
The present invention overcomes this drawback.
It has in fact been discovered that, in the preparation of dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane by condensation of chloral and chlorobenzene in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid, the value of. The ratio between the content of p-p 'isomer and the content of o-p' isomer is significantly increased when the condensation reaction is carried out at temperatures lower than those used heretofore.
This follows from the observation that, as the reaction temperature is reduced, the crystallization point of the obtained dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is markedly high, indicating an increase in the value of the ratio between the content of isomer pp 'and the content of isomer o-p'. The following table serves to illustrate this phenomenon.

<tb> - <SEP> 15 <SEP> C <SEP> 96, 3 <SEP> C Analysis by means of infrared absorption spectra reveals that dichlordiphenyl-trichloroethane having a crystallization point of 89 3 C , as it is.
obtained by the condensation reaction of chloral and chlorobenzene in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid at a condensation temperature of 30 C, has a pp 'isomer content of about 72.7 / o, while diclilordiphenyltrichlorethane having a crystallization point of 95 6 C, as it is. obtained following a particular embodiment of the process according to the present invention, has a p-p ′ isomer content of approximately 80.01 / 0.
For carrying out the process according to the present invention, an amount of chlorobenzene of 3 to 5 mol / g is preferably used per 1 mol / g of chloral.
As the condensing agent it is advisable to use sulfuric acid at least 100% concentrated. Thus, we will preferably use
about 100% sulfuric acid or 5, 20, 35 or 65% SOS oleum.
Under these conditions, a product is easily obtained whose crystallization point is greater than. 92 C.
The amount of sulfuric acid required is regulated by the amount of chlorobenzene used, since excess chlorobenzene is sulfonated during the process. reaction. The amount of water formed in the condensation reactions and. sulphonation should not reduce the concentration of sulfuric acid below 95% in order for the reactions to continue to a satisfactory final stage. Therefore, it is generally preferred to carry out the reaction in the presence of an amount of sulfuric acid sufficient to obtain the desired end conditions.
Instead of chloral, chloral hydrate can be used. In this case, however, it is necessary to use larger quantities of sulfuric acid to compensate for the additional quantities of water.
The preferred temperature for carrying out the new process according to the present invention is between -15 and + 5 C. At temperatures below -1.5 C the reaction mass tends to solidify and the rate of the reaction is reduced. .
At still lower temperatures, the reaction can be carried out in the presence of. various inert media. It has, however, been observed (that sulfuric acid could be used satisfactorily as a medium for this reaction when working at temperatures between the limits indicated. In this case the quantity of sulfuric acid used as the medium for this reaction. The reaction constitutes an additional amount in excess of the amount necessary to obtain the reaction conditions mentioned above.
When the reaction is complete, the dialilordiphenyltrichloroethane is separated from the mixture by any of the known methods.
With the process according to the present invention, good yields of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane are obtained, calculated on the basis of chloral. Good yields are also obtained on the basis of chlorobenzene, since it is possible, by already known methods, to recover the chlorobenzene from the chlorobenzene-sulfonic acid by distillation at high speed. 'water at temperatures above 150 C.
This recovered chlorobenzene is suitable for being used again for the condensation reactions resulting in the formation of diclilordiphenyltrichloroethane.
The implementation of the process according to the present invention is described in the following examples: Example 1: A load of 73.8 g (based on a 100% product) of chloral anhydrous and 1.68.7 g of chlorobenzene in a 3-nozzle, 1-liter flask fitted with a stirrer, a thermometer and a black dropper funnel.
This load is cooled to. 2 C approximately and then added 100 g of sulfuric acid at 60 Bé. Then the mass is cooled to 0 ° C. and maintained at 0 ° C. while 270 g of 351% oleum are added over the course of 3 to 4 hours with constant stirring. At this stage the mass forms a mud which is easily stirred. When all of the oleum has been added, the mass is stirred for a further 1/2 hour at 0 C and then the temperature of the reaction mass is allowed to rise to 30 C within 2 hours, constantly shaking the mass.
The reaction mass is poured into a volume of water approximately equal to the volume of this mass and the temperature of the mixture is raised to 95-105 C. After stirring for a few minutes, the molten dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is allowed to settle and the mixture is removed. the upper acid layer by decanting. The molten dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is then washed with hot water and neutralized by means of sodium bicarbonate. Dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is dried by heating it under reduced pressure and then allowed to solidify.
The dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is then ground until the desired particle size is obtained.
From the feed indicated above, 151.8 g of diehlordiphenyltrichlorethane are obtained, which represents a yield of 85.6%, based on chloral. The crystallization point of this dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is 93 9 C.
Example 2: 73.8 g (based on a 100% product) of anhydrous chloral and 225 g of chlorobenzene are introduced into the reaction device described in Example 1 After cooling this mass to 2 C, 100 g of 601> Bé sulfuric acid are added and the mass is cooled to 0 C. In the space of 3 to 4 hours, 360 is added. g of 35% oleum with constant stirring and maintaining the reaction mass at a temperature of approximately 0 C.
The reaction is allowed to proceed and the dichlordiphenyl-trichloroethane is recovered as described in Example 1.
From this charge of reactants, 174.1 g of dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane are obtained, which represents a yield of 98.2% based on chloral. The crystallization point of this dichlordiphenyltrichlorethane is 93 9 C.
Example 3: The device described in Example 1 is used and the flask is charged with 73.8 g (based on a 100% product) of anhydrous chloral and 281, 3 g of chlorobenzene. After cooling to 2 ° C., this mass is treated with 100 g of sulfuric acid at 60 ° C.
During. while the temperature is maintained at 0 ° C., 450 g of 35% oleum are added over the course of 3 to 4 hours with constant stirring. Then the mass is treated as described in Example 1.
From this charge, 173.8 g of dichlorodiphenyitrichloroethane are obtained, which represents a yield of 98.0% based on chloral. The crystallization point of this dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane is 93 2 C.
Example 4: The reaction device described in Example 1 is charged with 73.8 g (based on a 100% product) of anhydrous chloral and 225 g of chlorobenzene. This mass is cooled to about 0 C and then 100 g of sulfuric acid at 60 Bé are added. AT.
-10 C and while stirring constantly, 360 g of oleum are added to. 35% in the space of 3 to. 4 hours. Once the addition of the oleum is complete, the mass is stirred for several hours at 10 ° C. and then treated as described in Example 1.
The amount of dichlordiphenyltrichlorethane obtained from this feed was 119.8 g, which represents a yield of 81.5% based on chloral. The crystallization point of this dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane is 95.16 C.
The mixture of isomers prepared by the process according to the present invention and having a higher value of the ratio between the pp 'isomer and the o-p' isomer, can be used in powder form or in the form of mixtures. with various inert vehicles such as dry inert powders or with inert liquid vehicles such as solvents or diluents, for example a liquid solvent before a boiling point higher than the initial boiling point of kerosene, or again under in the form of emulsions, for example in the form described in US Pat. No. 2117-175,
to produce compositions having an insecticidal activity superior to that of compositions prepared by means of dichlordiphenyltrichloroethane of a quality such as is presently found in commerce.
