On ne peut prétendre définitivement que l'amélioration de la longévité et de la résis tance -à l'usure du bec de tournevis, dont les faces destinées à venir en contact avec la vis sont obtenues en refoulant le bec dans une cavité de matriçage, résulte d'une trempe du métal par suite de l'usinage ou de la sup pression des irrégularités superficielles, ou de la combinaison de ces effets et d'autres, mais on est certain qu'en refoulant le bec d'un tournevis;
Screwdriver and method for its manufacture. The present invention relates to a screwdriver for screws and other similar fasteners, designated hereinafter by the generic term screws, these screwdrivers being intended to be used for screws whose head has a notch other than circular, this notch having a central cavity which coincides with the axis of rotation of the screw and several grooves which start radially from this cavity and which are separated from each other by bosses.
The screwdrivers used hitherto for screws of the above-mentioned type have generally been manufactured in the form of a rigid steel rod which had to undergo several machining operations, the cost price of these tools therefore being. very high. As the accuracy of the finished product depends on the care with which the machine is adjusted and maintained under operating conditions, it is necessary to constantly monitor its operation and carefully check the product obtained.
The object of the invention is, above all, to make such screwdrivers such that they can be manufactured by a process for which the continual oversight of the operations of the. machine and verification of the product obtained are. avoided.
It is also intended to make the screwdrivers of the type in question comprise a part intended to be engaged in the head of the screw and which is shaped in a more precise manner than with the methods applied hitherto, this part having, in addition, a greater resistance to wear.
It also aims to achieve an improved process for polishing the manufacture of screwdrivers of the kind in question and by which these screwdrivers can be manufactured at a relatively low price while having the advantages indicated above.
The present invention relates to a screwdriver intended for screws the head of which has a notch having a central cavity coinciding with the axis of rotation of the screw and several radial grooves opening into this cavity and separated by solid parts. The screwdriver object of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a rod, the. cross section, at at least one of the ends of the rod, has, at least approximately, the shape of the cross section of said notch at the entrance to the latter, and in that this end of the rod has a beak which is obtained by compressing said end of the rod in a trimming cavity corresponding to the notch of the screws, so that the metal of the spout is.
compressed relative to that of the rod, so that said nose has polished surfaces resistant to wear and which fit exactly with the notch in order to cooperate with the latter.
The invention also relates to a key method for manufacturing the screwdriver, a method characterized in that a shaped blank is formed (the rod, the cross section at at least one end of this rod having at least approximately the shape of said notch at the entrance thereof, and in that one end of this blank is forced into a stamping cavity corresponding to the notch of the screw.
The accompanying drawing, by way of example, shows an embodiment of the screwdriver and illustrates the process.
Fig. 1 shows, in elevation, the screwdriver.
Fig. 2 shows, in plan, a screw head with a notch of the type specified, and for which the screwdriver of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 shows, in perspective, part of a rod used to make this screwdriver.
Fig. 4 shows, in elevation and on a larger scale, the end of a partially shaped screwdriver.
Fig. 5 shows, in axial section, -a die -used in the process.
Figs. 6 and 7 show, respectively in elevation and in section along 7-7 (fig. 6), the end of the screwdriver according to fig. 1.
Fig. 2 shows a notch in the head of the screw, of the type specified, for which a screwdriver is used according to fig. 1. This notch, having a generally conical appearance, comprises a central cavity 13 which coincides with the axis of rotation of the screw and from which start several radial grooves delimited by end faces 14, inclined inwards or towards the bottom of the cavity or the axis of the screw and by opposite side faces 15.
The neighboring faces 15 of each pair of adjacent grooves end in pa-. 16 kings of the notch which form an obtuse angle between them. The opposite side faces 15 are oriented so that the lines of intersection which they form with a section plane perpendicular to the axis of the screw diverge from the outside towards the axis of the screw and so that these lines move closer together as the plane moves toward end face 14, so that they are closer together at the bottom of the notch. The bottom 17 of the notch has a shallow concave shape.
It can be seen in FIG. 2, that the adjacent grooves of the notch are. separated from each other by a solid part delimited by faces 15 and 16.
The notch of the. fig. 2 has four radial grooves distributed regularly around the central cavity, but their number may be different from four.
The screwdriver shown in fig. 1 and which we use. for a screw of this type comprises a handle 10 engaged on the tool formed by a rod 11 terminated by a nose 12 intended to be engaged in the notch of the screw, the transverse section of this rod being shown in FIG. 3.
The rod comprises four radial ribs 18, perpendicular to each other to correspond to the location of the grooves of the notch. of the screw, so that this rod has a cross section.
The ribs 18 are delimited by the opposite side faces 19 and by an external face 20, and the side faces of two adjacent ribs are connected to each other by a concave face 21. All the faces 19, 20 and 21 have their generatrices parallel to each other. the longitudinal axis of the rod. It should be noted that the side faces 19 diverge from the outer face 20 and above all as regards their bases, close to the axis, so that a solid and rigid core 22 is obtained.
This is very important so that the screwdriver has sufficient resistance to twisting and the screws can be tightened without the tool shank undergoing excessive twisting. The cross section of the shank should only roughly match that of the notch in the screw head near the free edge of this notch and considerable deviation is allowed. It is preferred, however, that the maximum diameter of the rod corresponds to that of the free edge kills the notch and that the thickness of the ribs 18 corresponds to the. width of the grooves between the side faces 15 thereof (Fig. 2).
A rod blank can be prepared in advance, in the form of a continuous bar or indeterminate length, by rolling between the profile rolls or by drawing through a suitable die. The rod can be roughly shaped by swimming and then stretched to give it the desired final dimensions. The rod or bar, thus shaped, can be supplied, in large sections, to the screwdriver manufacturer who will carry out the subsequent machining operations.
To make a screwdriver which fits the particular notch shown in fig. ?, the end of the rod or bar is first tapered by grinding or planing as shown in fi-. 4, so that the outer faces 20 of the ribs 18 are cut to obtain outer end faces 24 which are inclined at an angle which corresponds substantially. at the angle of inclination of the end faces 14 of the notch. The core of the rod or bar has a conical shape, as visible at 25, the conicity corresponding to the concavity of the bottom 17 of the notch.
This machining can. be done on an automatic machine to manufacture screws which can at the same time cut the rod or continuous bar into sections having the desired length.
The pointed or tapered end of the rods, as shown in fig. 4, is then forced into the shaping cavity 31 of a die 30 (FIG. 5) which comprises fins parallel to the radial grooves of the die. The cavity 31 has a shape and dimensions substantially similar to those of the notch 13 of the head of the screw. The cavity 31 may be a little deeper than the notch 13, but the bottom of the cavity 37. should not be folded smaller than the corresponding part of the notch 13 for the reason that the end of the screwdriver should not be. not come up against the bottom of this notch before all the side faces have come into contact.
The end of the rod is forced back into the die cavity with sufficient pressure so that the metal of the rod can creep into the cavity until it completely fills the cavity, giving the faces ribs of shapes corresponding to those of the cavity 31 of the matrix (Fig. 6).
17i1 central hole 32 is. provided in the bottom of the cavity 31 to allow the so-called excess metal flow in the event that the cross section of the rod 11 is a little larger than the average section of the cavity, so that a considerable amount of metal must be moved to obtain the surfaces of the nose of the tool and which are intended to act on the screw. This excess metal can then be easily removed by forging or cold forming.
The nose of the tool can thus be made conforming to the cavity 31 of the die and since this corresponds to the notch of the head of the screw, the screwdriver fits itself, with a high degree of 'correctness, in this check mark. The die-forging cavity may be checked from time to time for its accuracy until excessive wear and all tools produced are thus of standardized shape and size.
The faces of the beak. of the tool therefore fit exactly in the notch of the screw head and this head is held, by rubbing contact, between the adjacent faces of the end of the nose which can be moved in all directions. Full contact between all the adjacent faces of the tool nose and the screw notch is important, because the clamping force can thus be distributed over the largest possible contact surface, which prolongs as much as possible the service life of the screwdriver.
Because of the angle of inclination of the side faces of the notch, it is necessary to provide an obliquity of the different faces of the nose of the tool for the reasons indicated above.
The manufacturing process, described above, allows this obliquity to be easily obtained in the radial direction.
The cold forging of the nose of the tool with the aid of dies 30 can be done in a die-head machine, in common use, for the manufacture of screws. After the headings of the parts, these can be heat treated to give them the necessary hardness, after which they can be engaged in handles or other suitable supports. By shaping. the nose of the tool in a die, such as 30, a certain quenching due to machining is obtained, due to the reason that the end of the shank is strongly compressed as it is forced into the die cavity.
By compressing the nose of the tool by its discharge in a die, its faces of the tines coming into contact with the screw undergo a high polishing, which makes all the small surface irregularities of said faces disappear. This is important for the reason that it has been observed that defects in the nose of the tool almost always cause small cracks in the faces which come into contact with the screw, these cracks extending into the ribs.
Such cracks or surface irregularities can form during rolling, grinding or machining to obtain the blank. To this end, it should be noted that the longevity and resistance to wear of a nozzle, which is machined on a conventional machine or which is ground, are in particular improved by putting the nozzle at one. final stamping or compression by forcing this nozzle into a stamping cavity, as described.
One can only definitively claim that the improvement of the longevity and of the wear resistance of the screwdriver nozzle, the faces of which intended to come into contact with the screw are obtained by pushing the nozzle back into a stamping cavity, results from hardening of the metal as a result of machining or removal of surface irregularities, or the combination of these effects and others, but it is certain that by pushing back the tip of a screwdriver;
sketched. previously, by rolling, grinding or machining, the longevity of the screwdriver can be increased by at least 1.0%. .
For the particular embodiment of the screwdriver, described above, the transverse section of the shank 11 of the tool, obtained from the bar shown in part in FIG. 3, has over its entire length and with a rough approximation, the shape of that of the notch of the screw head, near its free edge; one can give only to the part of the stem, close to the beak; such a section, while the remaining part of the rod has an ordinary cylindrical shape. Preferred, however, are the constitution indicated above.
