On voit (fig.
A method of manufacturing a screw thread, a tool for implementing this method,
application of this method and threaded rod resulting from this method
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a screw thread; it also relates to a tool for implementing this method. as well as an application of this process, as well as the threaded rod resulting from this process.
For the manufacture of a small or medium diameter thread, cutting dies or rollers are normally used. In the first case. the operation is similar to a turning, in the second case, the thread of the screw thread is shaped by displacement or displacement of the material.
The die removes the excess material from the workpiece in the form of chips. By this method, any screw thread in practically all machinable materials by turning can be carried out.
However, the fairly rapid wear of the tool when working certain metals, as well as the roughness of the surface, can limit the output quite significantly. Tools with built-in cutting edges frequently cause a modification of the profile which, therefore, does not corresponds more to the requirements of the standards.
If a thread is to be rolled, the workpiece is turned cylindrically to a diameter smaller than the total diameter. Therefore, the points are formed by the material moved by shaping the hollows of the thread.
Depending on the material used, this plastic deformation requires considerable effort. Resistance to deformation may make it impossible to manufacture a thread by rolling. The main advantages of rolled threads are their clean surfaces and their high strength, due to the strain hardening of the material.
It can be seen that neither of the two methods currently used, applied alone, is able to give complete satisfaction, especially when the parts to be fitted with a screw thread. that is, the parts to be threaded, are made of a hard and / or low malleability material.
such as, for example, stainless steel.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a method and a tool allowing the manufacture of a screw thread in a manner free from the aforementioned drawbacks, in particular in the case where the part to be threaded is made of a hard material or not very malleable.
The method of manufacturing a thread according to the present invention is characterized in that the thread of this thread of this thread is roughened by cutting by means of a cutting tool which removes material from a cylindrical starting part, with a diameter corresponding to a dimension located between the middle and the top of the thread of the thread to be produced, leaving at the bottom and on at least part of the side of the thread, during this rough cutting, an extra thickness in relation to the desired final dimension, and in that the Thread is completed by upsetting by means of profiled rollers, arranged and calibrated to push back the material left in excess thickness during roughing, until the thread of the no screw to the desired final dimension
Advantageously, when this method is intended for the manufacture of an external screw thread on a rod or screw,
the thread of this thread is roughed out by cutting using a cutting tool consisting of a die; in this case, the method is further advantageously characterized in that the roughing operation by cutting is carried out simultaneously over part of the length of the screw thread to be produced and the terminating operation by upsetting the rollers on another part of the length of the screw thread to be produced on which we have just performed, during the same process, said roughing operation.
According to the invention, the tool for carrying out the method in this latter particularly advantageous form is characterized in that it comprises a die-holder and roller-holder part comprising a bore of sufficient dimensions to allow a rod to pass. provided with the screw thread to be completed, this part bearing on a surface where said hole opens. pivoted around the mouth of this bore, at least three rollers for forming the thread by upsetting. the periphery of these rollers projecting above the mouth of said bore, these rollers being profiled and arranged in connection with this bore to suit.
in the manner of the rollers of a threading tool by single discharge, the formation in the desired final dimension of the screw pitch to be produced, and in that said part also carries, above or next to said rollers, elements of thread die formed and arranged to form a thread die, the axis of which corresponds to that around which said rollers are able to act to form a thread by upsetting, the cutting profile of said die being established so as to be able to cut, around a starting cylindrical rod entering it in a helical movement of pitch corresponding to the pitch to be produced, at least one blank of the thread of this pitch in which remains, with respect to the desired final dimension , an extra thickness at the bottom and on at least part of the side of the net the profiles of the rollers,
suitably disposed in depth at the periphery of these rollers, being established to force this extra thickness into parts of said rod which. during the same movement of helical feed, pass in contact with the profiles of rollers immediately after having been roughed by cutting parts of the die, so as to bring the screw pitch to the desired final dimension, the configuration and the arrangement relative die elements and rollers being such that the cutting profile parts of the die and the profile parts of rollers directed towards the axis around which the rollers are arranged and with which the axis of the die merges, define , either by the points where their vertices are located or by the points where their funds are located, a same helical vertex line or a same helical bottom line,
which line has a constant axial pitch with a radius varying at most within the limits defined by the bottom and the top of the profile of the screw pitch to be produced.
According to the invention, the application of this method relates to the manufacture of screw threads on the surface of a rod, for example a screw, made of a hard material and / or of low malleability.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, embodiments of the tool according to the invention and illustrates, by way of example, the modes of implementation of the method by means of the shapes of tool shown.
Figs. 1 and 2 schematically represent the two operations of the process.
Figs. 3 and 4 show, respectively in plan and in section, a first embodiment of the tool.
Figs. S and 6 represent, respectively in plan and in section, a second form of execution of the tool, and
figs. 7 and 8 show, respectively in plan and in section, a second embodiment of the tool, and
In fig. 1, a solid horizontal line A represents in section the still unthreaded surface of a starting part to be provided with a screw thread. A curve in phantom lines B represents the profile cut in this part during a first operation or roughing by cutting by means of a suitable cutting tool, for example a die.
We see that the bottom of the thread fb has a very wide rounded shape, which means that the edge of the tool which cuts the profile according to the curve B will not be sharp and will not risk being damaged too quickly during
The roughing operation, even if the part in which the profile is cut is a part made of a relatively hard metal, such as for example stainless steel.
Fig. 2 shows the second operation by which a profile along curve B is modified to take the shape shown in FIG. 2 by the curve in phantom
C. In this figure, we see curve B again, but this time drawn in solid lines. By means of a roller device having a suitable profile, the material is pushed back into the zone which. according to the schematic representation of FIG. 2, is located between the curve
B and curve C at the places where the curve C is deeper than the curve B, that is to say at the place of the foot and the bottom of the net.
The material pushed back by the roller goes to fill the area which, in the schematic representation of FIG. 2, is located between the curve C and the curve B at the places where the curve C is higher than the curve B, that is to say at the peaks of the profiL We see that the bottom f, threads according to the profile C is significantly narrower than the bottom fb of the profile of the blank.
However, the extra thickness that must be pushed back to get from the profile of the blank according to curve B to the profile of the desired screw pitch according to curve C is small relative to the material that would have to be pushed back or moved to form a screw pitch. according to curve C directly from a cylindrical part whose diameter would be approximately halfway up the thread according to curve C. As the extra thickness that must be forced to the rollers is relatively small, the relatively narrow formation of the bottom of the thread f, does not damage the rollers by means of which the operation is performed.
even in the case where the upset material is not very malleable, which is the case for example with stainless steel.
This way of proceeding by a roughing operation with the cutting tool and a finishing operation with the pushing tool proves to be favorable due to the fact that by roughing the profile in a manner parallel to the final pitch with a cutting tool , we reduce the quantity of material that the pressure tool (rollers) must move to arrive at the final shape of the profile. This solution eliminates the unfavorable influence of the brittleness of the cutting edge on the finished profile: it maintains the advantage of the clean and hardened surface which one has by means of the rolling process, while not requiring the rollers (pressure tool) to undergo enormous forces to push back significant amounts of material.
A process such as that which has just been briefly described becomes, however, even more advantageous when it is possible to carry out the two roughing and finishing operations simultaneously and by means of the same tool.
Figs. 3 and 4 represent a tool achieving this performance. Regarding fig. 4, it should be said that part of the cut, which concerns the whole of the tool with the exception of the die plate 4, is made along the line AB of FIG. 3. while another part of the cut, which concerns only the die plate 4, is made along the line CD in fig. 4.
In the embodiment represented by these figures, it can be seen that the tool comprises a die-holder and roller-holder part 1, of circular shape, which supports the thread rollers 3 by pivots 2, and which also supports the thread. -above these rollers 3 a die plate 4. It can be seen (fig. 4) that the rollers 3 are housed in a housing 5 formed in the die-holder and roll-holder part, the pivots 2 of these rollers 3 being inclined relative to or bottom of housing 5, bottom which is perpendicular to the axis of said part. As a result, the rollers 3 are slightly inclined, as can be seen in FIG. 4 (this inclination not having, for reasons of clarity of the drawing, also been shown in FIG. 3).
On the other hand, we see in this fig. 3, something not visible in fig. 4 because of the particular line of cut in this representation, a central bore 6 which passes through the lower part of the die holder and roll holder 1. The profile 7 of the rollers corresponds to the negative of the screw thread to be executed. The three rollers 3 are arranged symmetrically on the bottom of the housing around said central bore 6 so that their peripheral profile 7 projects above this bore 6. This arrangement is well known in the case of thread-only tools. rollers (threading only by upsetting or rolling) and it is not necessary to dwell here in its details
Above the rollers 3.the die and roller holder part 1 still supports the die plate 4.
which has in its center a window in the shape of a clover, the parts projecting towards the center have a die profile 8, so that the plate 4 constitutes a die. This profile 8 is not, however, identical to a normal die profile, because it is only intended to roughen the thread and not to complete it, that is to say it only performs the operation illustrated in fig. 1. The axis around which the three die profiles 8 are located is the same as that around which the rollers 3 are located with their profile 7 and the relative angular position of the die and the rollers is such that the profiles 7 and 8 define a continuous thread profile.
The implementation of the method of manufacturing a screw thread by means of the tool shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 looks like this:
A threading rod is introduced from above (relative to fig. 4) firstly through the die 8 so that a thread blank is cut therein in a manner corresponding to fig. 1 It goes without saying that the introduction of this rod into the tool is done according to a relative helical movement, either the tool or the rod can be fixed while the other moves in rotation and in axial translation, the possibility It also exists to make one of these two elements make the longitudinal movement and the other the rotary movement in order to compose the necessary relative helical movement.
For this operation. the tool is held in a tool holder, for example by means of a ring 10 which clamps a slightly conical outer bearing surface 9 represented by the die holder and roller holder part 1.
It is easy to realize that as soon as part of the rod which is introduced helically into the tool has been blanked out by the profile 8 of the die 4. it passes between the profiles 7 of the rollers 3 which give it, by upsetting (or rolling), the final shape that the screw thread must have, in accordance with what is shown in FIG. 2.
Note that when you have to thread a part whose thread must not go from end to end, that is to say when you have to thread for example an ordinary type screw, the last part of the thread (in the example of a screw, the part located very close to the screw head) will only be worked by profile 8 of die 4 but will not have been completed by profile 7 of rollers 3. A problem The same also arises with the use of common dies or roller threading tools common in the bar turning art, and this problem can be solved in various ways which need not be mentioned here. Let us just say that by keeping the thickness of the die 4 relatively thin, the length of the partially threaded thread portion can be reduced.
This is the reason why, in the tool shown in fig. 4, the die plate 4 has a smaller thickness than the height of the rollers 3, but it should be noted that in certain cases, this little thickness of the die 4 could make the latter more delicate and less solid.
Another embodiment in which the die elements are thicker is shown in FIGS.
5 and 6, fig. 6 being a section along the line A-A 'of FIG. 5.
On these fig. S and 6, the elements corresponding to elements which are found in the embodiment according to FIGS. 3 and 4, are designated by the same reference signs. a premium being added to the designation of the elements which, while corresponding to elements of FIGS.
3 and 4, are not identical to these. It can be seen that the embodiment according to these FIGS. 5 and 6 comprises a die and roll holder part 1 ', almost identical to that which was in the embodiment previously described. differing from it only by the fact that it does not include. at its upper part. an internal bearing intended to receive the die plate. Indeed, in this second embodiment, the elements of the die 4 'have a thickness practically equal to the height of the housing 5 provided in the part 1', the die being housed directly in this housing. The parts of this die which carry the cutting profiles 8 'are, however, relatively narrow while the notches 11 of the die. normally intended to receive chips. are enlarged so that rollers 3 'can pass through them.
Thus, the elements of the die 4 'which carry the cutting profile 8' are arranged between rollers 3 'which are mounted on the supporting part and roll holder 1' and which pass through the notches 11 of the die 4 '. This arrangement is clearly visible in FIG. S. Note that. in the case of this execution, as in the case of the execution described above, the pivots 2 ′ and the rollers 3 ′ are inclined so that their profile is presented at an angle identical to that of the screw thread to be produced. However, considering the direction of the section in FIG. 6, this inclination is not represented by an angle which, in the figure, the axis of the pivot 2 'would form with the axis of the die holder and roller holder part (which, as previously, is circular in shape) . but this inclination should be shown in figs.
S and 6 by tracing outlines in the form of a very closed ellipse in fig. 6 and very open in FIG. S. For convenience, we preferred. in fig. 5. translate the very open ellipses by circles and in fig. 6. translate very closed ellipses into simple straight lines. There is therefore good reason to understand that. for example in fig. 6, the pivot 2 'forms an angle with the plane of the figure and that, for example in FIG. S, the pivots 2 'and the rollers 3' are not quite perpendicular to the plane of the figure. but are slightly leaning over the one
The implementation of the method by means of the tool according to FIGS. 5 and 6 hardly differ from the implementation of the method by means of the tool according to FIGS. 3 and 4, but it should however be specified that.
on the profile 8 'of the die, it is the upper teeth, located at a higher level than the top of the active profile 7' of the rollers 3 ', which have the role of roughing the thread according to what has been seen in connection with fig. 1.
It is, however, common. in a die-only or roller-only threading tool. to give either the cutting profile of the die or the pushing profile of the rollers a bite which increases from the side where the rod to be threaded is threaded to the side through which it exits. This progression in the degree of attack of the profile forming the thread means that it is only when leaving the tool that the thread will have its exact dimension. This is fine for end-to-end threading rods, but it can only be done to a very limited extent for rods that are not end-to-end threading. like for example the screw rods.
In such a case, some progression can still be given to the bite of the die teeth or the roller tips. taking into account that the back of the net will have a slightly greater tolerance than the front of the net.
When, with a tool such as that shown in fig. 5 and 6 such a progression of bite is allowed, the lower parts of the die profile 8 'which act simultaneously with the profiles 7' of the rollers. will be cut in such a way as to prepare the thread for the parts of the roller profile located even lower and which. Therefore. since the roll also will be profiled with said bite progression, will penetrate more into the rod than the parts of the roll profile 7 'located higher on the periphery of the rollers 3'.
In the event that such a progression of biting is not allowed, the lower parts of the profiles 8 'and 7' will only become effectively active for the threading when the parts of these profiles situated above begin to be worn.
The great thickness of the die elements according to the execution of fig. 5 and 6, together with a sufficiently large height of the corresponding upsetting thread rollers, therefore improves in any case. and most especially in the case of use for threading long rods, the quality of the tool, in particular as regards its service life.
Apart from the above-mentioned differences, what has been said concerning the embodiment of the tool according to FIGS. 3 and 4 is also valid for the embodiment of the tool according to fig. 5 and 6.
Figs. 7 and 8 show a third embodiment which is in fact a combination of the first two embodiments described. It should be noted that the section of FIG. 8 is made according to the line
A-A 'of fig. 7. Concerning the designation of the elements
shown in these figs. 7 and 8, the same remark is to be made as concerning the case of FIGS. 5 and 6. except for the fact that the elements homologous to those which are found in the first embodiments, but which are not identical to these. are designated by a second sign instead of a prime sign.
In this embodiment, the tool has three
qili rolls. all, although similar to what has been seen for the other figures that is not shown in the drawing, are inclined with respect to a perpendicular surface.
cular to the thread axis. Two of these three rolls 3a "
are of low height and are topped with elements of
4 "die, the thickness of which is approximately equal to
the height of these rollers 3a ". The third of these rou
leaux 3b "is higher and has an active profile of
discharge 7 "which goes up to a level located approximately halfway up the die plate 4" passing over the rollers 3a ". This roller 3b" enters a notch in the die plate 34 "in a manner similar to what has been seen in conjunction with Figures 5 and 6.
However, the distribution of the die elements provided with cutting profiles is different, and is similar to that which has been seen in connection with FIGS. 3 and 4. The die plate 4 "has only two parts with cutting profiles directed towards the center. Parts which lie practically above the profile parts 7" of the rollers 3a "directed towards the center, while the three - the second cutting part of the die projecting towards the center which, in a normal die, would complete the first two. is simply omitted to make room for the roller 3b ".
When the rod to be threaded is introduced between the parts bearing the profile 8 "of the die, the absence of said third part could tend to deflect the rod to be threaded radially. In order to avoid such a drawback and 'guiding the rod as well as with a conventional die. the roller 3b "has at its upper part, above the zone comprising its active profile 7", a zone with a smooth periphery (or which could also present a profile but in any case less accentuated than the active profile) so as to provide support for the rod which engages against the two die parts carrying the profile 8 ".
Instead of giving the roller 3b "this part of smooth periphery intended to support the rod, one could also alternatively, shape the two biting parts of the die (carrying the profile 8") so as to bring the end lower, (compared to fig. 7) of each of them to cross a diameter to tend to close beyond this diameter, as is marked by a dotted line in fig. 7. These die parts would then ensure by themselves the guiding of the rod and the upper guide part of the roller 3b "would be superfluous.
Let us also say that the pivots 2a "of the rollers 3a" are similar to the pivots which were in the case of the execution according to FIGS. 3 and 4, with the difference that they are a little shorter. but they do not need to present heads at their upper part because the part of the die located above the roller which they carry prevents this roller from coming out of its engagement on the pivot. pivot 2b "carrying the roller 3b" which must include at its upper part a head intended to hold the pivot 3b "which.
without this. could fall out since no part of the die plate 4 "retains it. It can be seen, going back to fig. 6, that the pins 2" which held the rollers 3 "in the case of the execution according to this figure .
also had a head like that of pivot 2b ".
Concerning the implementation of the method by means of the tool according to FIGS. 7 and 8, it can be seen that this is an intermediary between what we had with the embodiment of the tool according to FIGS. 3 and 4 and what we had with the embodiment according to FIGS. 5 and 6.
In this intermediate embodiment, the die plate 4 "is of sufficient thickness to have a certain strength, but, on the other hand, the rollers have profiles which reach relatively high, which allows a good finish of the die. threaded rod even when the latter
is not threaded from end to end. At the moment when the advance of the threading rod is to be stopped, a part of the thread which cannot come into contact with the profile 7 "of the rollers 3a", will however come into contact with the profile 7 "of the roll 3b "and will therefore be shaped with a still acceptable quality, it being understood that the passage between at least three rollers, as it is done below the upper level of the rollers 3a", ensures a thread quality which is even higher.
The advantage of the execution according to fig. 7 and 8 on re-execution according to fig. S and 6, lies in the fact that the die parts advancing towards the center to cut a rough thread, do not need to be as narrow as those which in the embodiment according to figs. . S and 6.
had to pass between two neighboring rollers. In the embodiment according to FIGS. 7 and 8. the jaws of the die are - or in any case could 8tre - approximately as wide as they are thick, whereas in the embodiment according to FIGS. 3 and 4, they can be wide but are relatively thin. and that in the embodiment according to FIGS. S and 6 they are very thick but must be relatively narrow.
A disadvantage of the execution according to fig. 7 and 8 compared to that according to FIGS. S and 6, on the other hand, lies in the obligation, for the execution according to fig. 7 and 8, to use an asymmetric die component. Depending on the case of manufacturing, this sector could be less advantageous.
The advantage of the last two embodiments described can be summarized as residing in the fact that. despite the use of dies of normal thickness, the screw thread obtained will be usable over almost its entire length.
The examples of embodiments of the tool which have just been described all include three rollers, but it is understood that one could very well have similar tools with more than three rollers; however, the diameter of the rollers must become all the smaller, in relation to the diameter of the rod to be threaded, the higher the number of these rollers. It is therefore generally found preferable to limit oneself to three rollers. On the other hand, the number of jaws or profiled and cutting parts exhibited by the dies used in the embodiments of the tool which have been described may also be different from what has been mentioned; in principle, except in the case of the third embodiment described, the number of jaws of the die will be equal to the number of rollers.
In the case of the execution according to fig. 7 and 8, one could also have more than one high roll 3b "with, depending on the total number of rolls, one or more low rollers 3a". In the general case. this execution comprises at least three rollers in total including at least one high roll and at least one low roll, each type of roll also possibly having a greater number, depending on the case.
