Device for heating a room. The present invention relates to an apparatus supplying hot air under pressure for heating a room, and comprising a heat exchanger, a burner supplying said heat exchanger with hot gaseous combustion products and a blower. driven by a motor, supplying both pressurized air to said heat exchanger and said burner.
This apparatus is characterized according to the invention in that said heat exchanger comprises a chamber of annular section between two coaxial walls and. two annular end walls, one of which has an opening situated at its outer periphery and the other an opening situated at its inner periphery, a spiral duct with flattened turns for the combustion products being.
arranged in said chamber with the lateral edges of its turns in contact with the end walls of the chamber so as to constitute between the turns of this spiral duct a spiral channel for the air to be heated, one of the ends of said spiral duct being connected to the burner to receive the hot combustion products and the other end being connected to an exhaust tube, the blower sending pressurized air into the spiral channel through the opening located at the outer periphery of one of the end walls of the chamber of annular section,
this air leaving this channel through the opening located at the inner periphery of the other end wall of the chamber to pass through a duct the core at its point of use, the whole being arranged so that the air to be heated flows through the spiral channel in the direction opposite to the direction of circulation of the combustion products in said spiral duct.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation in longitudinal section of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the right-hand end of the apparatus shown in <U> fi ,,. </U> 1, the end cover plate being. removed and part of the wall broken, to show part. of the heat exchange element.
Fig. 3 'is an elevational view of the left end of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1, the end wall being removed and part of the sheath of the rotor of the blower removed by breaking.
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional view through 4-4 of FIG. 1, viewed in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a partial sectional elevation at 5-5 of FIG. 1, looked in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the fixed deflectors which direct air after it leaves the fan rotor. The heating apparatus shown com takes a cylindrical wall 10 constituting an outer casing. The wall 10 is supported on consoles 12, attached to base members 14. Inside the wall 10 is arranged a cylindrical wall 16, of the same axis as the wall 10, a chamber of annular section being between the sides. walls 10 and 16 and two annular end walls 128 and 228.
Note that the end wall 128 has an opening (d) or openings at its outer periphery and that the end wall 228 has an opening (i) or openings at its inner periphery, the air to be heated entering. into and out of the heat exchanger through these openings respectively. An electric motor 22 drives the rotor of a fan shown on the left of FIG. 1, and an oil pump 24. A burner 26 is supplied by this oil pump. We see in fig. 1 that the air to be heated enters the blower to the left of this figure, as indicated by the arrows a.
This air passes radially outward through the fan rotor, as shown by arrows b, and then flows axially, as shown by arrows c, through spaces between fixed vanes (shown as particularly in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 and described below), by which the air is divided into two streams, one of which is indicated by the arrow e.
The pressurized air of the current indicated by the arrow e, which passes through the space surrounded by the wall 16, constitutes approximately 20% of the air delivered by the blower,
and it is sufficient to maintain a complete combustion of the fuel in the burner 26 and also to dilute the gaseous products of combustion which pass from the burner into the heating duct 32 of the heat exchanger 28. The temperature of the mixture is 800 C, for example. The air, in its path towards the burner 26 into which it enters, as shown by the arrow f, also fulfills the useful function of cooling the motor 22 by flowing over the surface of the casing thereof, the fuel pump 24 and other parts arranged inside the space surrounded by the cylinder wall 16.
It can be seen that the motor 22 is located almost entirely inside this space. The hot gaseous products which pass from the burner, as indicated by the arrow g, into the heating duct 32 of the heat exchange device, give up such a quantity of their heat to the latter that the temperature of the mixture of gaseous products which comes out through the exhaust pipe 34, as indicated by the arrow h, is quite moderate, for example from 55 to 120 C.
In addition, due to the complete combustion of the fuel in the burner and the large quantity of excess air supplied to the burner, the exhaust gases which pass through the heating duct 32 and exit through the pipe 34, are. substantially free of carbon monoxide and can safely be allowed to escape to any suitable location outside the building, either directly or through a chimney flue. The draft of a chimney is not necessary, since there is adequate pressure to force the exhaust gases out through a small one. pipe.
The exhaust gases can even be used for heating an exterior building, such as a garage, a gTange, a stable, etc.
The other high velocity stream of pressurized air, which represents the major part of the air supplied by the blower, passes into the heat exchanger 28 through opening d, and it is. heated to a high temperature by contact with the heating duct 32, for example from 120 to 205 C.
It leaves the exchanger through the opening i and enters the annular space 35, placed at the right-hand end of the heating device and leaves this space, still at high speed, through the distribution pipes. 36, relatively small in section, going to the points of use, as indicated by the arrows j. Passing through the heat exchanger, this air performs the useful function of preventing the. outer wall 10 to reach a temperature which is higher than the temperature of the air supplied by the blower.
The burner 26 is supported by the cylindrical wall 16 by means of a console 70. This burner comprises an outer cylindrical casing 72 and an inner casing 7-t, placed coaxially. The casing 71 surrounds the combustion chamber and is provided with holes 76. It is preferably made of stainless steel. These envelopes 72 and 74 are supported on a bracket 78, bolted to the bracket 70. The closed upper end of the inner casing 74 carries a fuel spray nozzle 80, to which oil is sent by the pump. oil 24 by means of the pipe 82 and a valve 81, controlled by the valve stem 86, provided with the handle 87.
A spark plug 88, mounted in the outer casing 72 and projecting into the combustion chamber within the inner casing 74, serves to ignite the fuel which enters the combustion chamber through the fuel nozzle 80 and is mixed with the air qdi enters the annular section space formed between the casings 72 and 74, as indicated by the arrows f, and passes into the inner casing 74 through the holes 76 .
The combustion chamber is connected to the inner end of the heating duct 32 by a flared sliding connection, shown at 89 in FIGS. 1 and 2, which provides the path indicated by the arrows g for the hot gaseous products, which leave the combustion chamber of the burner and enter the duct 32 of the heat exchanger. They circulate in this duct in the direction indicated by the arrows k in fig. 2 and exit at its outer end through pipe 34.
The duct 32 of the heat exchanger 28 is formed by means of sheets 90 and 91, preferably of stainless steel, shaped as shown and welded together at their edges 92, so as to form a spiral duct. Flattened turns disposed in the chamber of annular section comprised between walls 10, 16, 128 and 228. The lateral edges 92 of the turns of the duct 32 are in contact with the annular end walls 1'28, 228 of the chamber, of so as to form between the turns of the duct 32 a helical channel, in the outer end of which the air to be heated enters through the opening d.
This air circulates, as indicated in fig. 2 by arrows 1, in the direction opposite to that of the circulation of hot gases in the duct 32 and leaves the inner end of this spiral channel through the opening i. As a result of the shape of the heating duct 32, the area of the cross-section of the passage through which the air to be heated passes constantly increases in the direction of the flow of this air, and the area of the cross-section of the passage through which the hot gases pass in the duct 32 constantly decreases in the direction of the flow of these gases.
This constitutes an advantageous arrangement because the velocities of the flow of the air to be heated and of the flow of the hot gases are thus kept essentially constant and thus a maximum heat transfer is obtained for a given surface. with minimum pressure drop in air and gas.
The fan rotor comprises a disc 102, fixed to the motor shaft 22, and a disc 106, provided in the center with an opening and at its periphery with a rim 108 of a diameter a little larger than the diameter of the disc 102 and surrounding the edge of this disc. Blades 110, disposed radially, are located between the disks 102 and 106 and fixed to them. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the vanes 110 are curved at their edges to provide flanges which are riveted or welded to the discs 102 and 106.
As shown in fig. 1, the vanes 110 are chamfered, as shown at 112, and the central opening of the disc 106 is provided with a flange 114. The disc 102 is secured to the motor shaft 22 by a nut. 116, a key being provided in the usual manner to prevent relative rotation of the rotor and the motor shaft. A terminal housing 118, having a central opening surrounded by a flange 120, having a diameter somewhat larger than the diameter of the flange 114, is removably attached to the cylindrical wall 10.
The stator of the fan, which receives the air delivered by the rotor, through the space between the edge of the disc 102 and the edge of the disc 106, is shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 to 6. It can be seen that the stator contains fixed vanes 124, the shape of which is visible in FIG. 6. Each of these blades 124 is provided with a flange 126, which is welded to a plate 128, the radial arrangement of the blades 124 being visible in FIG. 5.
With the edges 129 of the vanes 124 cooperates a wall 130 in the form of a cup (fig. 1 and 5), having a central opening whose edge cooperates with the casing of the motor to which this wall 130 is fixed by screws 131 not. sant through holes 132. The edges 133 of the vanes 124 abut against a sleeve 134, which is placed against the inner face of the wall 10. It can be seen from FIGS. 1, 4 and 5, how the blades 124 of the stator receive the air delivered by the rotor, change its direction and speed and direct it along the paths represented by different arrows in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 and by the arrow c in fig. 1.
The right end of the envelope formed by wall 10 is closed by a circular cover 136, which is removably attached to wall 10. The apparatus shown can of course be employed with means for filtering or purifying. in another way the air entering the blower, with keys means for humidifying the hot air released, with means for regulating it automatically, so as to regulate the temperature and the quantity of hot air supplied and with other devices.
