The present invention relates to an aviation propulsion unit comprising a gas generator supplying a user device, for example a helicopter rotor driven by reaction, this generator comprising a first air compressor. axial flow, supplying at least one combustion chamber supplying the driving gases to an axial flow gas turbine, coaxial with the first air compressor and driving the latter. This unit is characterized in that it comprises a second air compressor with axial flow, also driven by said turbine, coaxial with this turbine and arranged on the side thereof remote from the first compressor,
the direction of flow through the second compressor being towards the turbine and opposite to the direction of flow through the turbine and the first compressor, and a collecting device disposed at least partially in the space included between the turbine and the second air compressor, into which the exhaust gases from the turbine and the compressed air from the second compressor are sent, these gases and this air then entering at least one duct through which their mixture is sent to said user device.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the aviation propulsion unit which is the subject of the present invention.

The fi-. 2 is a sectional view, on a larger scale, of the collecting device.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the collecting device shown in FIG. 2, part of the outer wall being torn off. Fig. 4 is another perspective view of the positive collector device, part of the outer and intermediate walls being cut away.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the reader neck device.
Fig. 6 is an end elevational view of the collecting device, taken along VI-VI of FIG. 1.
The propellant group shown generally in FIG. 1 is a helicopter propulsion unit in which the gas supplied by the generator is supplied to nozzles arranged at the ends of the rotor blades and from which the gas spurts out in the form of jets, in order to turn this rotor. The shown propellant is arranged so that the outer boundary layers of the gas stream supplied are not at an excessively high temperature.
This avoids the difficulties which would otherwise be caused by the thermal expansion of the parts, the lubrication of the parts moving with respect to one another, and the need to construct all the parts coming into contact with the gases from refractory material.
The gas generator of the propellant group shown comprises a first air compressor 1, with axial flow and having an annular air intake 2, a row of combustion chambers 3 arranged parallel to the axis of the generator and in which fuel is burned, and a turbine 4 with two stages and axial flow, driven by the combustion gases leaving the combustion chambers. A second air compressor 5, with axial flow and having a compression ratio that is slightly lower than that of the first compressor 1, is arranged coaxially with this first compressor and with the turbine, although at a certain distance from the turbine. and on the side of the latter remote from the compressor 1, and is provided with an air intake 6.
This compressor is arranged so as to discharge compressed air in the general direction of the outlet of the turbine 4. The second compressor 5 is dragged by the turbine 4, via a shaft 7 (see fig. 2) which passes through a collector device 8, arranged in the space between the turbine and the second compressor, and the first compressor is also driven in a normal manner, by a shaft connected to the turbine and extending into the opposite direction. A starter motor 9 is mounted on the shaft of the compressor 1, on the side of the air intake thereof.
The shaft 7 extending between the turbine 4 and the second compressor cond 5 is carried by bearings 10 and 11 themselves carried by cross arms fixed to fixed parts of the generator casing and the two bearings 10 and 11 and the shaft 7 are surrounded by a casing 12 gas-tight and generally cylindrical in shape, as shown in fia. 2. The bearings may themselves also include labyrinth-type gas-tight seals as indicated somewhat schematically at 13, and conduits not shown may be provided to supply the bearings and the space enclosed by the casing 12. in cooling air.
The collector device 8 arranged between the turbine and the second compressor is arranged to supply the exhaust gases from the turbine and the air compressed by the second compressor to a non-restricting, rotary and two-way valve 15, which is arranged so that, in one position, it brings the gases to a duct 16 which is connected to the rotor of the helicopter and that, in another position, it sends them into a duct 17 bringing them to the exhaust or to a rectilinear propulsion nozzle.
The collecting device 8 is shown in detail in fi-. 2 to 6 and comprises a cylindrical inner wall 18 which surrounds the cylindrical casing 12 but which is disposed at a distance from the latter which itself surrounds the shaft 7, an intermediate wall 19 which surrounds the wall 18 of which it is separated by an appreciable distance, this intermediate wall being connected to a duct oriented upwards and of generally rectangular shape 20, and an outer wall 21 which surrounds the intermediate wall 19 from which it is separated by a certain distance and which is connected to a duct 22, directed upwards, of greater dimension than the duct 20. This duct 22 is also of generally rec tangular shape and surrounds the duct 20.
The conduit 22 is connected to the inlet conduit of the two-way valve 15. The outer wall 21 is connected to the intermediate wall 19 in the vicinity of the discharge side of the turbine 4 and on the side of this wall adjacent to the second. compressor 5, it is connected to a part 23 of the casing which constitutes the outer wall of the annular discharge pipe of said compressor.
Two fixed guide vanes 24 are arranged inside the space limited by the outer wall 21 and by the intermediate wall 19, one of these vanes being arranged on each side of the axis of this space and the said vanes being joined together to form a V-shaped fitting which somewhat resembles a plow base and which is disposed in the lower part of said space and in the vicinity of the discharge port of the second compressor 5.
The two vanes 24 are inclined outward and upward at an average angle of about 450, and they are joined to the intermediate wall and are freely adjusted inside the outer wall, in order to take account of the thermal expansion of parts relative to each other. It can therefore be seen that the compressed air leaving the second compressor is divided into two streams and is guided upwards by the vanes 24 when it passes through the cooling jacket formed by the space limited by the outer wall 21 and by the intermediate wall 19, and these two streams are joined to each other and exit, in the form of an enveloping stream, through the space situated between the rectangular conduits 20 and 22.
Part of the air discharged by the second compressor 5 is taken through the annular passage located between the cylindrical casing 12 and the inner wall 18, as can be seen in particular in FIG. 2, and this air escapes through aeration pipes 11a and serves to help maintain the shaft 7 and its bearings 10 and 11 at a reasonable temperature.
The inner cylindrical wall 18 is joined to the intermediate wall 19 in the vicinity of the discharge side of the second compressor 5 and in the vicinity of the discharge side of the turbine 4 (Fig. 2), and is further joined with a sleeve 26 which constitutes an inner wall limiting the annular discharge opening of said turbine. The intermediate wall 19 is joined at its end adjacent to the turbine to a part of the casing constituting the outer wall of the annular discharge port of the turbine and it will be appreciated that the two walls 18 and 19 thus delimit an annular space which connects to a passage of rectangular section extending upwards which is delimited by the duct 20.
Two fixed guide bars 27 are arranged in the space located between the inner and intermediate walls 18 and 19, one on each side of the axis of the shaft 7, these vanes being joined together in the lower part of the limited space adjacent to the discharge port of the turbine, so as to form a single dividing vane 28 which separates the exhaust gases exiting the turbine into two streams which do not smell of on either side of the cylindrical wall 18 and which are deflected upwards by said vanes 27. The two vanes 27 are inclined outwards and upwards by an average angle of approximately 450 and are joined, by for example, by welding, to the intermediate wall 19 and to the interior wall 18.
An additional curved guide vane 29 is disposed within the space between walls 18 and 19, to help deflect exhaust gases exiting the turbine upward. This blade 29 comprises two curved extensions 30 and 31 which extend in a general horizontal plane and towards the annular discharge orifice of the turbine, said extensions being arranged at a distance of approximately two thirds of the total diameter of the turbine. bine from the lower part thereof and connecting to a part 32 which extends in a generally vertical direction and across the duct 20.
Two additional fairing walls 33 and 34 are joined to the inner wall 18, are arranged inside the duct 20 and converge towards one another upwards where they meet and are connected to a wall. single vertical 35, so as to help bring together the two exhaust gas streams after they have been deflected upwards by the fixed vanes 27. These fairing walls 33 and 34 which serve mainly to help the The laminar flow of gases may be curved or consist of members in the form of plates, as shown at 33a and 34a in FIG. 6.
The upper edge of the rectangular duct 22 is integral with a flange 36 by means of which this duct is fixed to the inlet duct 14 of the casing of the two-way rotary valve 15, the latter comprising an internal rotary member 37 arranged for deflect the gases into the duct 16 from which they are led to the rotor of the helicopter, or on the contrary to deflect them towards the exhaust duct 17.
The valve 15 is constructed so as to minimize the throttling effect during the movement of its rotary member from one of its positions to the other.
The rectangular duct 20, the wall of which separates the relatively hot exhaust gases exiting the turbine from the relatively cold enveloping stream of air exiting the second compressor 5, extends upwards above the flange 36, until a point very close to the end of the rotary member 37 of the valve. This construction tends to retain the enveloping current or sheath of relatively cold air surrounding the core of relatively hot exhaust gases as they pass through the valve and thus to minimize the dangers and difficulties which could arise in the event that this valve would be overheated.
In addition, the enveloping current of cooling air can in certain cases be kept inside the duct or ducts located downstream of the valve 15, so as to avoid overheating this or these ducts.
The compression ratio of the second compressor 5 is such, relative to the compression ratio of the first compressor 1 and to the characteristics of the turbine 4, that one obtains pressures substantially adapted to one another to the inlet valve 15 and under all generator operating conditions.
