Method for operating low-frequency induction Sehmel furnaces with steel crucibles. In the operation of induction crucible furnaces, there are many difficulties that can be traced back to insufficient control of the baths (flushing) of the molten metal, which is caused by the currents induced in the visual material.
The strength of the bath movement depends on various factors, such as the power generated in the silt material, the specific carbon weight and the electrical conductivity of the metal melt as well as the frequency of the inducing current.
The frequency works. look insofar as at never their frequencies the penetration depth of the current into the weld pool is greater and there are generated by greater motive forces. As a result, the bath movement in a low-frequency crucible furnace is much greater than in induction furnaces that would be operated at a higher frequency. This is one reason why the low-frequency induction furnace was unable to gain acceptance in many cases.
It has now recently transitioned to use, in particular for the melting of light metals, induction crucible furnaces in which the crucible is made of steel. Since these steel crucibles take up most of the induced power, the fact that the bath movement is severely restricted even with furnaces operated with low frequency. Nevertheless, it has been shown that in many cases the bath movement is still too strong, since a very calm weld bath must be required when melting light metals due to the risk of increased oxygen and gas absorption.
This is particularly true for magnesium, since if 3lagnesium is melted down too much, the oxidation products can easily catch fire.
Since the bath movement now depends on the power inductively transmitted in the melt, it has already been proposed to limit the bath movement by increasing the crucible wall thickness. By increasing the wall thickness of the crucible, a correspondingly larger proportion of the power is taken up by the steel crucible, so that the power induced in the melt decreases accordingly.
If a high specific surface loading is used, as is necessary for a rapid melting process, then such great wall thicknesses are necessary that the crucible weight is in a very unfavorable relationship to the contents of the crucible. Apart from that, the greater wall thickness and thus the greater crucible weight also has an unfavorable influence on the overall efficiency of the furnace, because the crucible has to be heated up every time. There is also an increased risk of cracks forming in the crucible, as dangerous thermal stresses can easily occur inside the strong crucible wall.
It has also been proposed, albeit not in connection with steel crucibles, to prevent the bath movement in induction melting furnaces by keeping the bath level of the melt above the inducing coil by a certain amount, so that the static pressure of the melt above the induction coil sufficient to suppress the bath movement completely or largely.
However, this results in a loss of heated crucible wall surface and thus an unfavorable relationship between the crucible content and furnace output, because as long as the material to be melted is lumpy and that is the case for most of the entire melting time, the heat transfer from the crucible wall to the material can be practical can only be followed by radiation. To do this, however, a certain overtemperature is required, which increases with the power to be transmitted. However, the output cannot be increased at will, since the crucible material limits the excess temperature that can be used.
The invention is now based on the task of developing a method for operating low-frequency induction melting ovens with steel crucibles with which the material is melted down quickly, the effective crucible wall surface is used as fully as possible and in which the bath movement (boiling) is still kept low.
According to the invention, the task is solved by a method according to which all induction coils are switched on when melting solid goods and then the part of the induction coils is switched off during the melting process or reduced in its performance, which is in immediate cash Near the respective bathroom level.
First of all, as long as the crucible is still filled with lumpy material, it is inductively heated in its entire height, with the highest power permissible with regard to the crucible material being operated. The total crucible height is to be understood as the height up to which the crucible is normally filled with material. When the material begins to melt, the crucible slowly fills with liquid metal from the bottom.
So that the melt does not boil too much, the lower part of the heating is now switched off or its output is reduced, while the strong heating is maintained in the upper part. As the melting progresses, i.e. the bath level rises accordingly, that part of the induction coils that is in the immediate vicinity of the respective bath level is switched off or reduced in its power, which in turn prevents an inadmissibly large bath movement.
In order to enable such a zone-wise control of the heating, the induction coils of the furnace are divided into several sub-coils arranged one above the other in a well-known manner. The zone-wise regulation of the heating can be done so that one or more induction coils completely switched off or operated by using the Dreieek-Stern-Sehalturig or some other known circuit to reduce the performance Her with reduced performance.
If, for example, the sea salt fills the crucible halfway, the central part of the heating is throttled or switched off completely, while the upper and lower part of the heating remain switched on. You can always switch on as much power in the lower part of the crucible as the static height of the liquid column allows, i.e. the liquid column that is above the inductively heated part of the bath must be so high that that at the The surge on the surface of the bath remains within moderate limits.
In addition, the part located above the bathroom level can also be used. of the crucible can be further heated, so that from there the contents of the crucible are also supplied with heat by conduction and radiation.
If the entire material is then melted and the crucible is filled to its normal height with liquid material, one or more of the upper induction coils located at the level of the bath level are switched off or their power reduced in accordance with the rule set out above, while the lower bobbins are full. remain switched on, where the height to be switched off is to be dimensioned in such a way that the bath movement is kept within permissible limits by the static height of the unheated melt.
In a further development of the invention, the reduced performance of the furnace due to the switching off of the upper coil can be compensated for by the fact that the coils that are located below the switched off or low-power coils are now more with one of the reduction corresponding increased power can be operated.
This increase in output is permissible because the heat transfer no longer takes place by radiation, but by direct heat transfer from the crucible wall to the melt, for which much lower excess temperatures are necessary, since the heat transfer coefficient is the direct heat transfer from the crucible wall to the moving liquid melt compared to the heat transfer by radiation is significantly higher and thus (read: multiple times the power can be transferred without the crucible wall assuming inadmissible temperatures.
By using the method according to the invention is. it is possible to use steel crucibles with relatively small wall thicknesses that are measured solely with regard to mechanical strength. However, this increases the efficiency of the furnace considerably, since a far lower crucible weight has to be heated when the furnace is put into operation. The size and thus the price of the furnace are also positively influenced by this.
