Multiple capacitor with self-healing individual capacitors. As is well known, multiple capacitors usually consist of groups of individual capacitors connected in parallel and in series. The voltage to be applied is decisive for the number of series connections and the required capacity for the number of parallel connections. The problem on which the present invention is based is explained below with reference to FIGS. 1-3, of which FIG. 1 shows a known circuit for multiple capacitors, FIG. 2 shows the circuit of a multiple capacitor according to an exemplary embodiment of the invention and FIG. 3 shows a winding tape of one of the capacitors used in FIG.
In the multiple capacitor according to FIG. 1, two groups of six capacitors 1 or 2 connected in parallel are connected one behind the other. This arrangement is based on purely practical considerations and offers advantages with regard to the routing of the lines within the multiple capacitor. The individual capacitor groups are arranged within a housing in such layers that when all capacitors in one layer are connected in parallel, only one line leads to the next layer when the housing is grounded.
On the other hand, such a circuit has the disadvantage that in the event of breakdowns even of a single capacitor in a layer, under certain circumstances, energy conversions can take place which result in mechanical destruction of the broken down capacitor.
If, for example, there is a voltage of 10 kV at the terminals of the multiple capacitor according to FIG. 1, and a voltage of 5 kV is found at each of the capacitors 1 and 2 with a capacity of 2 each, uF When a capacitor 1 of the first layer breaks down with a low-resistance connection of a generator connected to the terminals of the arrangement, an energy supply of 450 joules to the capacitors 2 takes place, since after the capacitor breakdown in the first layer .the voltage on the capacitors of the second layer of 5 kV increases to 10 kV.
The failed capacitor itself acts as a low-ohmic pre-resistor for the capacitors 2. The calculation shows that 300 joules are destroyed in it, assuming that the resistance remains constant over time. The voltage increase that occurs is so great that it not only destroys the broken capacitor 1, but also that a breakdown in the second position and failure of the entire system must be expected.
When considering these processes, it was assumed that normal film capacitors are used for the construction of such multiple capacitors. Completely different conditions arise, however, if in a multiple capacitor built from several rows of individual capacitors, the individual capacitors according to the invention consist of self-healing capacitors and the rows are connected in parallel only at their ends.
Self-healing capacitors are those capacitors whose metallic coatings consist of a thin metal coating, for example vapor-deposited onto a dielectric tape, which burns away in the event of a breakdown around the breakdown point without the broken-down capacitor becoming unusable becomes. In a multiple capacitor constructed using such capacitors, as shown in FIG. 2, several rows of capacitors 3 and 4 are connected in parallel only at their ends.
Assuming that the individual capacitors 3 and 4 each have a capacity of 2 F and are connected to a voltage of 5 kV, a low-resistance connection of a generator and a healing breakdown in a capacitor 3 result in an energy supply of only in this case 75 joules into the capacitor 4 connected in series with the blown capacitor 3, the voltage of which also rises from 5 kV to 10 kV when the capacitor 3 breaks down. Here, too, the broken capacitor 3 is to be regarded as a low-resistance series resistor for the associated capacitor 4, in which 50 joules are destroyed if the resistance is viewed as constant over time.
From these energy considerations, the superiority of the circuit according to FIG. 2 over that according to FIG. 1 results without further. This is all the more the case as the entire burn-out energy in the circuit of FIG. 2 does not exceed the amount of 50 joules regardless of the number of rows connected in parallel, while it is 300 joules in the circuit shown in FIG The number of parallel stands continues to rise.
The size of the burnout energy is thus kept within such limits in the circuit according to FIG. 2 that damage to the self-healing capacitors is to be expected. The longer lines have a beneficial effect in that they form current loops with noticeable impedance and thereby reduce the maximum burnout energy. If resistance wire is used to make the connection, the burnout energy can be reduced even further.
For the construction of multiple capacitors from self-healing capacitors, it is important with regard to a uniform voltage distribution that the individual capacitors used have as uniform insulation values as possible, because these are decisive for the conductive breakdowns and also for the service life of the capacitors. For this reason, the insulation values of the capacitors are determined before assembly and, at least in a row, only capacitors with the same insulation values are switched on.
The intended effect is best achieved if the capacitors are burned out individually by applying a voltage that is higher than their operating voltage before the insulation value is determined. Damage to the winding caused by carbon copies.
Dadureli can prevent large amounts of energy being converted. That the winding is wound onto an insulating tube - for example made from the insulating material available commercially under the brand name Pertina - or a wooden mandrel and bandaged on the outside with a large number of empty turns of paper.
Is independent of these measures. e, it is advisable to reduce the burnout energy by dividing the metal coating into more or less wide strips 5 as shown in FIG. 3, which, if punctures occur, result in a limitation of the energy flow to the thrown-through areas within the individual sub-areas of the coating. This phenomenon is known as decoupling. With a width of the metal covering of 50 mm, a strip width of about 20 mm has proven useful.
In the case of wider metal coverings, it is also advisable to increase the width of the strips to 30 or 40 mm. In the case of a smaller width of, for example, less than 10 mm, the decoupling is better, but in the case of breakdowns one or two strips are separated, so that noticeable capacity losses are recorded. A slightly higher burnout energy is therefore accepted if the burnout points caused by it are smaller than the width of the strips. In addition, the decoupling can be improved again by obliquely running strips, since oblique strips, due to their greater length, have a higher resistance than strips perpendicular to the winding tape.
Such capacitors can be used, for example, as filter capacitors for DC voltages above 3000 volts and as phase shift capacitors for low-voltage current compensation for AC voltages from 1000 volts.
