Process for the preparation of an unsaturated alcohol containing an ionone ring. In the synthesis of vitamin A, the great difficulty has hitherto been that a method was missing which would allow the f'-ionylideneacetic acid esters and the vitamin A acid esters in good yield and without simultaneous destruction of double bonds to reduce in the chain zii the corresponding alcohols.
It has now been found that esters of the general formula

wherein R is an unsaturated radical having an ionone ring and R 'is a hydrocarbon radical, e.g. B. CHs. C2H ,, CsH12, C6H5, means by reaction with.
Lithium-aluminum Hy drill or lithium-boron hydride into the alcohols of the formula R-CH2. OH can be converted, in the vast majority of cases without changing the C-C double bonds and hydroxyl groups in the r: chain.
When using lithium aluminum hydride, the conversion takes place according to the following equations:
EMI0001.0024
Lithium-aluminum-1 = Iydrill can be obtained by reacting .I 11o1 lithium hydride with 1.
Mol aluminum chloride in ether solution and filtering off the formed insoluble lithium chloride from the ether solution of the lithium altiminium hydride. Al.uininiumliy drill can be produced in a similar way by reacting 3 mol lithium hy drill with 1 lalol aluminum chloride and filtering off the lithium chloride formed.
Lithium boron hydride is also soluble in organic solvents. It can be obtained by reacting lithium-aluminum = hydride with diborane (B2H6). Usually, the esters mentioned react with the hydrides at room temperature; occasionally, however, a supply of heat is necessary to initiate the reaction. As can be seen from the above reaction equations, organometallic compounds are formed first, which convert into alcohols in the presence of hydrogen ions.
The reaction of the esters with the hydrides is preferably carried out in organic solvents. Ethyl ether, isopropyl ether, butyl ether, dioxane, and also solvent mixtures such as ether-benzene, for example, are particularly suitable. The metal or semimetal hydride is expediently brought together with the ester in such a way that solutions of the two substances are mixed with one another.
For example, the lithium-aluminum hydride can be used in ethereal solution. It is preferably worked at a temperature between -30a and +500 C and, if necessary, the whole thing is heated on the reflux condenser until the reaction has ended. The organometallic compound is converted into the corresponding alcohol. preferably by adding acetone and a dilute mineral acid, e.g. B. of 5% hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, with stirring.
The aqueous layer which forms can then be separated off and the alcohol can be isolated from the organic solution which remains by distilling off the solvent.
The subject of the patent is a process for the production of an unsaturated alcohol containing an ionone ring, which is characterized in that a flionylidene-acetic acid ester with. treated with a metal or semimetal hydride and the resulting organometallic compound is converted into ss ionylidene ethanol by hydrolysis.
Example: 4.6 g (0.0175 mol) of ss'-jonylidene acetic acid ethyl ester were dissolved in 60 cm3 of dry ether and the solution was poured into a three-necked flask equipped with a stirrer, dropping funnel and reflux condenser, brought in. The entire apparatus was dried in the oven at 800 ° C. before use.
50 cubic meters of a 1 liter solution of 15 g of lithium aluminum hydride (0.4 mol) were added to the solution mentioned in the course of 2 minutes with stirring. The mixture, which had become cloudy, was warmed up gently on the reflux condenser, then slowly admixed with 100 em3 5 / o hydrochloric acid and then stirred for a further 5 minutes.
The reaction mixture was extracted with ether, the extract was washed with water and the solvent was distilled off. The residue obtained was 3-ionylidene ethanol of the formula:
