A process for drawing ingots and a press for the implementation of this process. The invention includes a method of drawing ingots into shaped parts such as bars, rods, pipes and the like, and a press for carrying out this method.
When drawing an ingot in a press, it is first subjected to a pressure of a certain magnitude by advancing the rod or piston of the press against the ingot. before. that the wire drawing proper begins. The purpose of this operation is simply to compress the ingot in the press part intended to receive it and to force it to flow into the recessed part located at the end of this part, on the side of the. die, so that this space is completely and uniformly filled by the ingot.
However, it is thus not possible to obtain a compacting action without wire drawing by means of a wire drawing press of known construction, because such a press does not include any means for closing, on the side of the opening of the die, the space intended to receive the ingot. To compact an ingot without it being in any way drawn, it must be possible to compress it by means of the rod of the press in a space which is otherwise closed on all sides.
The invention aims to obtain a complete settlement of the ingot to be drawn in an ingot box that comprises the drawing press, with the aim of eliminating any leks recesses or other defects that could. present this ingot and make its structure more homogeneous, so that the product ultimately. obtained by drawing present, from one end. at the other, a uniform structure.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that a previously heated ingot is loaded into the bore of the linen box obtained from a wire drawing press, this. bore being. kept closed at its end adjacent to a pendant die. that a sufficient pressure is applied to the ingot, by means of a rod of the press, to compact it without the tré spinning, in that one moves away a meture iron member closing off said bore at its end close to the . die and in that the ingot is drawn through the die.
The press for carrying out this method comprises a plate, an ingot box having a bore arranged to receive an ingot, a die, means for allowing this die to be held against said box, facing one of the ends. mites of said bore, and a press rod; it is characterized in that it further comprises a closure member shaped to close off said end of this bore and means for maintaining said member in the closed position and for moving it away from this end.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, several embodiments of a press for carrying out the process which the invention comprises. In the figures of this drawing, certain parts, of known borehole, (the various embodiments of the wire drawing press which the invention comprises, are not shown.
Figs. 1 and 2 are sectional elevations of a first embodiment of a press intended for the drawing of rods or solid bars, la, fig. 1 depicting the parts of the hanging press. the operation of settling the ingot and the fi. 2 showing them during the subsequent drawing operation.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are sectional elevations of a press identical to that shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, but equipped for the drawing of pipes of large internal diameter, fig. 3 and 4 representative. respectively the parts of the press before and during the drilling of the ingot and fig. 5 showing this pierced ingot, before its drawing.
Figs. 6 and. 7 are. horizontal sections of a second embodiment of the press, equipped for drawing rods or solid bars, the figures respectively representing the closure member and the die in their positions for packing. and for the drawing of the ingot.
Figs. 8 and 9 are sectional elevations of a third embodiment constituted by a wire drawing press of known type, suitable for carrying out the wire drawing process which the invention comprises, 1a. fig. 8 showing the closure member in its position for packing. ingot and fig. 9 showing it in its position for the drawing of this ingot.
The first embodiment, shown a-ax: fig. 1 and 2, comprises a plate 10, a support 11 for an ingot box 12. The support 11 can be moved in the direction of its longitudinal axis, relative. to the. plate, using a double-acting hydraulic motor means, represented by a cylinder 13 and a piston 14 with a piston rod 15. A die 16, disposed in a die holder 17, is disposed opposite 'a bore of the ingot box.
This die and this die holder are both mounted in a support 18, capable of being locked by means of a (the locking member 70, which descends into its locking position by its own weight. and which can be lifted with the aid of a hydraulic medium comprising a cylinder 20 and a piston 21.
As shown in fig. 1 and 2, a massive press rod 22, attached to. a support 23), is arranged on the other side of the ingot box 12. rie sheep and the main cylinder. key the press are. of a known ivpe and are not shown in the drawing.
This embodiment further comprises a closure plate 26 constituting a closure member and arranged to close an orifice presented by the. die and form a seal separating the ingot box. 12 of the. channel 16 (fig. 1). A.justeinent. sealed between the closure plate and the box 12, on the one hand, and this plate and the die, on the other hand, is obtained by means of hydraulic motor means 13 and 14, by which. the support 11 and the box 12 that it carries are brought back, against the plate 10.
As one can see. on the drawing. the. plate (the closure 26 is provided, on its face adjacent to the box 12, with a frustoconical projection the shape of which corresponds to that of a conical flare presented by the corresponding end of the bore of the box. 1.2, so that the closure plate is precisely centered with respect to the box.
The closure plate moves down to its closed position by its own weight, while it can be raised and held in the raised position, over the box 12 and its support 11. using a lifting device comprising. -He cable or. a chain 27, which passes over a pulley of. return 28 and a movable pulley 29, the latter being capable of performing a vertical movement under the action of a hydraulic motor means wedging a cylinder 30 and a piston 31.
When the press is operated to draw solid bars or rods, a previously heated ingot 13 is first loaded into the ingot box 12, then it is allowed to descend. plate 26 in its closed position, in which it closes the orifice (the the die, after having previously removed the box 7.2 and. its support Il. from the plate 10 and the parts associated with it, with the aid of the hydraulic motor means 13 and 14, to allow the plate 26 to come to take its closed position. The box 12 is then brought back for forming a tight seal between it and the closure plate, on the one hand, and between the closure plate and the die, on the other hand.
The pi-esse rod 22 is then put in. movement in the box under sufficient pressure (fig. 1) and forces the ingot to fill the entire section of the bore of the box and. then subjects it to a full compaction action, without drawing it.
Once the compaction action is complete, we. raises the closing plate 26 to the top of the support 11 with the aid of the lifting device 27, 28, 29 and of the motor means 30 and 31, after having first removed the box from the plate, so as to obtain the space necessary for raising this plate. The box is. then again brought back against the plate, so that the die comes in. intimate contact with the corresponding end of its bore and the operation of drawing the ingot through the die is carried out in the well known manner (FIG. 2).
A detailed variant of the press just described is particularly well suited to the drawing of pipes with a large internal diameter, because it enables this drawing to be carried out without excessive loss of material during the operation of drilling the pipe. . For this purpose, when it is desired to draw pipes, the massive press rod 22 is. replaced by a recessed press rod 24 and by a mandrel 25, of the same diameter as the bore of the finished pipe (fig. 3, 4 and 5). The mandrel 25 is capable of being moved independently of the recessed press rod 24, using a separate hydraulic motor means, as is commonly done.
To draw a pipe, let the plate 26 descend to its closed position (Fig. 3), in the same way as for the drawing of bars or solid rods. A lin- got ï; previously heated is then reduced in the box 12 under the effect of a force exerted, for example, jointly by the recessed press rod 24 and by the mandrel 25.
As seen at. the. fig. 3, the length of the box 12 and. that of the ingot are chosen such that the ingot fills only part of the bore of the box; thus, when the press rod and mandrel have been removed, there is still some free space at the end of the bore of the canister which faces the press rod and mandrel.
The chuck alone. is then pushed forward into the ingot (fi--. 4) and cups it by beading it on the greater part of its. length. The -stroke of the mandrel is adjusted in such a way that only a thin wall remains at the end of the ingot, adjacent to the closure plate 26. The ingot is. therefore subject, in this case also, to a compaction operation, carried out at the same time as its drilling, the orifice of the bore of the box. ingot and that of the. die being closed by the. plate 26.
The material constituting the ingot., That is. displaced by the mandrel during the tamping operation, is forced to flow back in the opposite direction of the mandrel movement, so that the gap in the end of the bore of the. box opposite to the one facing the plate is almost completely filled with linen material, @ ot. We. then lift the plate (the closure, up to the top of the support 1.1, and push the. box 7.2 against the plate, so that the. die fits exactly in the the adjacent end of its ally (fig. 5).
The mandrel is then moved forward again, which has the effect of driving out the bottom of the ingot. The stopper thus driven out is the only part called ingot which is lost during the manufacture of a pipe from this tasted flax and we realize that this stopper only represents a small part of the. material which would have been lost during the manufacture of such a pipe by means of a known press, in which the mandrel moves through the ingot with the die open, so that all of the material of the ingot displaced by the mandrel is. hunted through the industry.
The wire drawing itself is finally carried out in the usual way, by moving it. shank hollowed out in the ingot box.
Figs. 6 and 7 show a second embodiment of the press that the invention comprises, which is very particularly suitable for operating the closure member. In this embodiment, the die 16 with its die holder 17 and the iron meture plate 26 are mounted side by side on a common sliding support 130, capable of being moved in two opposite directions, in a horizontal plane. and perpendicular to the axis of the press. For this purpose, a double-acting hydraulic motor means is used, which comprises a cylinder 131 and a piston 132.
The support 11 of the ingot box can be moved, with the. box 12, against plate 10 and in the opposite direction, as is the case in the first embodiment and in the variant of detail described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 5, using hydraulic motor means 13 and 14, not shown in FIGS. 6 and 7. A guide plate 133 for the support 130 is fixed to the plate 10.
This form of execution is simple and has the advantage of allowing the die or the closing plate to be brought quickly into the working position, by means of a stroke of the hydraulic motor means 131, 132, and of 'simultaneously bring the other of these parts into its rest position. Switching from one operation to another is thus carried out quickly.
In fig. 6 and 7, this second embodiment of the press is. equipped with a massive press rod 22 for drawing bars or solid rods. For the drawing of pipes, the massive rod can be replaced by a hollow rod and by a mandrel, such as those which have been described with reference to FIGS. 3, 4 and 5.
The operation of the press shown in fi-. 6 and 7 is analogous to that of the press shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 or to that of the press shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, so it is not necessary to describe it again in detail. It will be appreciated that other modifications can be made to the embodiments described, for example the double-acting motor means 131 and 132 for the movable support 130 can be replaced by two single-acting motor means arranged at the opposite ends of said support.
Figs. 8 and. 9 show a third embodiment, consisting of a wire drawing press of known type, suitable for implementing the wire drawing process that the invention includes. In these figures, 10 is again the platen of the press, the box. lin got 12 being only partially represented. The die 16 is held by a die holder 34 which is inserted into a support 35. The support 35 of the die holder is locked in its working position by a wedge 36, capable of being raised by hydraulic means, not shown, to which it is connected by a rod 37.
The closure member serving to close the end of the bore of the box on the side of the die is here constituted by a plug 38, which is shaped so as to. fit exactly in the opening of the die 16. The stopper 38 is removably attached to a support 39, so that it can be quickly exchanged when it is desired to use the press with a die of different profile. Support 39 is. mounted on a shaft 40 and. it is connected by levers 41 to a carriage. 42, mounted to roll along a guide 43 of the. hurry. A counterweight 44 est. attached to lever 41.
At its periphery, the support 39 has ears 45, tines to cooperate with eorres- ponderant recesses, formed in the support 35 of the die holder or in a part which conque .de the press, adjacent to the. die, so as to form a bayonet connection. In view of locking and unlocking this bayonet coupling, the shaft 40 is mounted so that it can be turned with the aid of a handle 46.
Fig. 8 shows the plug 38 in place, the support 39 being locked in the support 35 of the die holder. The opening of the die is completely closed and the settling operation, without or with drilling, depending on the case, whether it concerns solid rods or bars or, on the contrary, pipes, can be carried out. in the same way as that previously described. To remove the cap, it is only necessary to unlock the bayonet connection by doing. turn handle 46, then remove carriage 49, which can be rolled along guide 43 well beyond. of the position shown in fi-.
p, from par to é @ -iter obstruct the passage of the drawn mass leaving the press.
The compacting operation that .comprises the method described has the effect of breaking up the coarsest particles of the material of the ingot, the structure of which is thus made more lcoinogenic, so that the product finally obtained by drawing presents, of a end to end, a uniform structure.
According to known arrangements, the specific pressure applied to the rod of the press to compact an ingot can easily be adjusted by means of a device for adjusting the edge supplied by the ram and the main cylinder of the press. .
An advantage of the method described is that the force required for the wire drawing properly. dit is less and in that the wear of the tooling. press, especially (the press rod and the die, is significantly reduced as a result.
