Spark plug for engine ù explosion. The present invention is for an object. a spark plug for an internal combustion engine.
The spark plug, object of the invention, comprises a central electrode and a body separated by an insulating part arranged so that the surface of its end intended to come inside a cylinder of said engine constitutes the path (the lesser electrical rigidity between said central electrode and another electrode connected to said body.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the spark plug, object of the invention.
The fi-. 1 is an axial sectional view of this form of execution.
Fig. 2 is a side view of a detail (the said embodiment, and Fig. 3 is an axial sectional view of a gasket, ready to be crimped to hold it in place on the body of the spark plug. .
The candle shown comprises a central electrode 1, made of stainless metal, the head 2 of which is screwed into an insulating part 3. This head could. also be simply constituted by a bulge that a slight matting would allow. to embed in the insulation. This head 2 is in contact with a resistor 4, made of carbonaceous material, the ohmic resistance of which is chosen as a function of the characteristics of the circuit and of the frequency ranges for which it is desired to depa.rasiter the motor.
A terminal 5, made of brass or another suitable metal, is screwed into one of the ends of the insulating part 3, a contact spring 6 being compressed between this terminal 5 and 1a. resistance 4. A plastic gasket 7 is compressed between said end of the insulating part 3 and a support flange that presents the. terminal 5.
The insulating part 3 is tubular and has two opposite conical surfaces. It is blocked in a body 9 key the spark plug by means of a gland 10, screwed into this body and provided with. its upper part, notches 11 which allow it to be locked using an appropriate tightening tool. A joint. the ?, for example in aluminum, copper or brass, is interposed between the cable gland 1.0 and the insulating part 3.
One of the ends of an internal liner 13, preferably of nickel, is enclosed between a conical part of the body 9 and the conical bearing surface of the. insulating part 3 opposite to that cooperating with the seal. 12 and the cable gland 10. The middle part of this che misage surrounds the insulating part and its other end is narrowed in 1-1 to constitute an electrode connected to the body 9.
The fic. 2 shows longitudinal slits 15 made in the side wall of che misage 13.
A seal 1.6 is made of plastic 17, for example asbestos, held in a coating of copper, brass key, aluminum or another metal. The coating has a cylindrical flange 18 (FIG. 3) which is crimped in a groove 19 made at the periphery of the body 9. The seal is thus secured to the spark plug during assembly; it is captive. It can also be separated from the spark plug, if it is desired, for example, to replace it, by exerting a force using the tip of a screwdriver or other tool.
It has been found that by incorporating intimately into a kaolin paste, intended to be used for the manufacture of the insulating part, soot a proportion of 7 to 20% and, preferably, 10 to 15% of asbestos, and by increasing the cooking,
an insulating composition is obtained which exhibits very high dielectric rigidity at the high temperatures of use of such a spark plug. In a candle such as that described, the insulating part had been made from a paste containing 12% asbestos powder and had a dielectric strength of 35 kilovolts at 600 C. In said paste, kaolin can also be replaced by alumina, by corundum, by soapstone, by molten quartz, by mica or by another suitable insulating material.
In operation, the arc emerges at several points, flush with the end of the insulating part inside the engine cylinder. This end constitutes an ignition cup.
The jacket 13 constitutes the electrode connected to the body 9 or ground electrode. It also serves to prevent the formation of internal deposits of carbonic particles, creating glowing spots liable to cause self-ignition. In addition, it has the advantage of ensuring thermal equilibrium between the two electrodes, so that the disintegration of the latter by transport of material by the are is distributed between them.
The wear of the electrodes is thus reduced to a minimum; in addition, cold starts are greatly facilitated.
Finally, it will be noted that the described spark plug constitutes a true cylindrical capacitor, the armatures of which are formed by the central electrode 1 and by the liner 13, and the dielectric of which is formed by the insulating part 3 and by the gaseous layer between the outer surface of the. insulating part and the inner surface of the che mage. This capacitor appreciably improves the interference suppression obtained by means of resistor 4.
The spark plug described is very resistant to fouling and provides excellent ignition, practically insensitive to variations in ambient pressure, the ignition arc being subtracted from dielectric variations in the ambient medium. This result is obtained thanks to the fact. that the arc is carried by the insulation.
Resistor 4 is very effective for interference suppression, particularly for high frequencies, since it is connected in the immediate vicinity of the place where the arc is produced. It is therefore not necessary for its ohmic resistance to be very high, so that it allows sufficient current to flow to ensure excellent ignition.
