X = ONa, Y = Cl-CO-, XY = NaCl + C02).

Process for the preparation of a carboxamide. It has been found that amides of α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acids, which have the general formula
EMI0001.0012
represent valuable means of repelling insects.
In the above formula: R1 and R, hydrogen or methyl 1, R3 alkyl and R, an araliphatic radical.
The acids on which these amides are based are known. They are: cotonic acid, ß, ß-dimethyl acrylic acid, α, ß, ß-trimethyl-acr5-oleic acid and α-ethylidene propionic acid. The aromatic nucleus of the radical R- can be substituted by non-salt-forming substituents.
Under not. Salt-forming substituents are to be understood as meaning, for example, halogen atoms, nitro, alkyl, alkoxy groups, etc.
The following N-alkyl-aralkylamines, for example, N-methyl-1-benzylamine, N-ethyl-benzylamine, N-isopropyl-benzylamine, N-allyl-benzylamine, N-methyl-o-methyl-benzylamine, N- lIetlivl-p-nitro-benzylamine, N-Ätliyl-o-bromobenzylamine, N -ethyl-3, @ - dichlorobenzylamine, N-ethyl-p-methoxy-benzylamine,
a-llethy lamino-n-propy l-benzene, a-ethylamino-p-clilor-ethylbenzene, a-ethylamino fl-methyl-propylbenzene, N-11ethyl-plienethylamine, N-methyl-P) -phenyl-propylamine , a-methylamino-isopropylbenzene, N-methyl-cinnamylamine,
N-methyl-8-phenyl-butyl-amine and the like.
Various methods known per se can be used to prepare the defined amides.
For example, α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acids of the formula I can be used
EMI0001.0073
or their reactive functional derivatives, such as halides, anhydrides, esters, amides or salts with N-alkyl-aralkylamines of the formula 1I
EMI0001.0079
or their salts, metal compounds or reactive derivatives.
This conversion proceeds in principle according to the following reaction scheme
EMI0001.0081
In the above formulas, R1, Rz, R3 and R4 have the meaning defined above, while X and Y denote radicals which split off during the reaction.
In the simplest case, the free acid is heated with the amine, with water splitting off (X = OH, Y = H, XY = H20). It is also possible, for example, to react an alkali salt of the acid with a salt of the amine by heating (e.g. X = ONa, Y = HCl - H, XY = NaCl + H20). Acid halides or anhydrides can be reacted with the amine, if necessary in the presence of acid-binding agents, for which the amine itself can also be used (e.g.
X = Cl, Y = H, XY = HCl). Furthermore, acid halides or anhydrides can also be reacted with metal compounds of the amines (e.g. X = Cl, Y = Na, XY = NaCl) or in special cases acid halides with halogen hydrates of the amines (e.g. X = Cl, Y = HCl # H, XY = 2 HCl). Esters react with the amines, splitting off alcohols (e.g.
B. X-OCH3, Y = H, XY = HOCH3) and finally amides also react with the N-alkylaralkylamines or their salts, releasing ammonia or ammonium salts (e.g. X = NH =, Y = H, NY = NH,).
A special variant, which also proceeds according to the above reaction scheme, is the reaction of salts of the acids with reactive carbamic acid derivatives which are derived from the amines defined above.
For example, N-aralkyl-N-alkyl-substituted carbamic acid halides, which can also be understood as chloroformic acid derivatives of N-alkyl-aralkyla.mine, can be mixed with alkali salts of α, ß-unsaturated acids by heating with elimination of carbon dioxide and alkali halide convert to the desired amides (e.g.
X = ONa, Y = Cl-CO-, XY = NaCl + CO 2).
The subject matter of the present patent is a process for the production of an α, γB-unsaturated carboxamide. The process is characterized in that an N-methylbenzylamine of the formula
EMI0002.0064
can act on a compound of the formula CH, -CH = CH -COX, where X and Y are radicals which are split off in the reaction.
The new compound obtained, crotonic acid-N-methyl-benzylamide, boils under 0.05 mm pressure at 120 to 1230 and is a yellowish oil. It is said to be a valuable means of deterring insects.
Example 1 10.5 parts of crotonic acid chloride are added dropwise to 25 parts of N-methyl 1-benzylamine with stirring so that the temperature rises to 130 to 1400. After cooling, the reaction product is dissolved in ether or another water-immiscible solvent and the solution is successively mixed with it. Hydrochloric acid, lye and water. After the solvent has been distilled off, the residue is distilled in vacuo.
The crotonic acid-N-methyl-benzylamide boils under 13 mm pressure from 173 to 1750 and is a yellowish oil.
Instead of in the presence of an excess of N-methyl-benzylamine, the reaction can also be carried out in the presence of an acid-binding agent, e.g. B. Potash performed. are, advantageously in a solvent, such as. B. acetone, is worked.
Example 2: The dry sodium salt of crotonic acid is used together with. The calculated amount of chloroformic acid-N-methyl-benzclamide in a spacious flask is heated to about 1800 until the evolution of carbon dioxide, which continues with vigorous foaming, has ended. Allow to cool to about 1000, add hot water and boil for a short time. After cold, the product is taken up in ether, the solution is washed closely with dilute acid, water, dilute lye and then again with water.
After drying with sodium sulfate, the ether is distilled off. The crotonic acid-N-methyl-benzylamide obtained as a residue is then purified by distillation in vacuo. It boils under 13 mm of pressure at 173 to 1750.
