I. La fig.
Device for maintaining in lateral position a section of tape animated by an advancing movement. There are various devices for laterally guiding a tape animated with an advancing movement. In a cinematographic apparatus for example, the lateral position of the tape, constituted by the film, during its passage in front of the objective is generally determined by two similar holding devices placed immediately before and immediately after the passage of the film in front of the objective .
The irregularities in the width of industrial tapes require the presence of guide members allowing the passage of the widest parts of the tape, while ensuring constant contact of these members with the two lateral edges of the tape.
These guide devices generally comprise a passage of rectangular section, two opposite walls of which are applied against the edges of the tape under the effect of a spring which pushes one of the two walls, movable, towards the other, fixed.
Some manufacturers use a suitably shaped spring as movable wall, others interpose a wall between the edge of the film and the spring.
The presence of movable members such as those used to date is however inconvenient for the user, particularly when placing the film. Devices have been provided by certain manufacturers to automatically separate the movable wall, in order to facilitate the engagement of the film in the passage. It is clear that these last positive statements are a source of constructive difficulties.
The present invention relates to a device for maintaining the lateral position of a tape driven by an advancing movement, which has a passage for the tape comprising a wall perpendicular to the plane of translation of the flap and which differs from devices known by the fact that the cond lateral side of this passage is fixed and inclined with respect to the first, so as to form a flared passage from its bottom, tape guide means being provided so that the tape is pushed , due to its elasticity, towards the shortest base of the passage and to maintain one of its edges in permanent contact with a support fixing the position in depth of said edge of the tape in the passage, so.
automatically maintain the two side edges of the tape in contact with the two sides of the pitch.
The accompanying drawing shows, schematically and by way of example, one embodiment of the holding device applied to the cinematographic apparatus.
Fig. 1 is a side view of the film retaining and guiding devices placed before and after the latter passes in front of the lens.
Fig. 2 is a partial front view of the devices shown in fi-. I. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line III-III of FIG. 2.
Figs. 4 to 6 are -nies similar to FIGS. 1 to 3, and relating to an execution variant.
In fig. 1 to 3 of the appended drawing, .P denotes a film passing over a first unroller 1, then forming an inlet loop 3, before passing through guiding and holding devices, then passing through the channel 4 which has a window located in the optical axis of the lens 5, passes through guiding and holding members, forms an output loop 6 before passing, finally, on a second unwinder 2.
The device for maintaining the section of film in the lateral position located in front of the window of the corridor 4 placed in the optical axis of the lens comprises a passage P, one of the lateral sides of which is formed by a fixed wall 9 located in the lens. a plane perpendicular to the transverse plane a of the passage and to the focal plane of the objective, that is to say perpendicular to the plane of the film, as it passes in front of the objective. The second lateral side of this passage is formed by the generatrix b of the casing of a conical member 10 situated in the transverse plane a. As shown in the drawing, this generatrix b is inclined relative to the wall 9, so as to form with the latter a flared passage P.
A support 12 is provided at the base of the wall 9 to fix the depth position of the film in the passage P. The distance separating the wall 9 from the generatrix b at the height of the support 12 is chosen equal to the nominal width. nal of the film. The device for maintaining the lateral position of the film shown in the appended drawing also comprises members for guiding the film defining for the latter a section of non-linear path extending on either side of the passage P and tending to deform elastically. the film, so that its inherent elasticity automatically tends to maintain its lateral edges in contact with both sides of the passage P.
These guide members consist of two supports 11, 13 located on either side of passage P. As shown in FIG. 1, these two supports of the film define with the support 12 a non-linear path, the support 7.2 defining the bottom of the passage P, being located outside the plane defined by the supports 11 and 13 or outside the plane tangent to the film simultaneously with the height of each of these two supports.
The operation of the device described is as follows: When the film .r is placed on its path between the unwinders 1 and 2, it takes, seen in profile, approximately the shape shown in FIG. 1. The film leaving both the unwinder 1 forms the inlet loop 3 and its own elasticity tends to keep it in constant contact with the bearing surface 11. In the embodiment shown, this bearing surface has two ranges located in the same plane parallel to the focal plane of the objective. However, in a variant of the execution of the device described, this bearing surface could have only one area or, on the contrary, more than two areas.
This bearing surface 11 is located ap proximately in the same plane as the bearing face 13 of the passage 4. On the other hand, the bearing 12 which defines the bottom of the passage P is situated in front of the plane defined by the faces d 'support 11 and 13, that is to say in front of the tangent plane e, so that on the section of path located between these two bearing faces, the film b' is elastically deformed as shown in FIG. 1.
Consequently, the inherent elasticity of the film tends to apply one of its edges on the support 12 and to maintain its other side edge in contact with the generatrix b, for-; mant one of the lateral sides of the passage P. This edge of the film exerts an elastic thrust f located in the transverse plane cc and perpendicular to the plane of the film. As shown in fig. 3, this elastic thrust f decomposes into a force m, perpendicular to the generator b and a force p located in the plane of the film and acting on the latter.
From the examination of fig. 3, it can be seen that this force p tends to maintain the second lateral edge of the film in contact with the wall 9 and therefore to maintain the film always in the same lateral position.
The lateral guide 10 provided with the generator; inclined trice b, being rigidly fixed to the frame of the apparatus, can be provided in a treated metal, having a very high surface hardness, so that it is possible to entirely avoid its wear. Likewise, the three supports 11, 12, 13 are rigidly fixed to the frame of the apparatus and may be provided in a treated metal, having sufficient surface hardness to avoid any wear due to friction of the film. All the surfaces on which the film rubs are polished to reduce friction.
One of the great advantages of the device described over the known devices is the fact that it does not include any movable member and that the lateral thrust p exerted on the film is generated by the elasticity of the latter itself. It follows that the lateral edge of the film is automatically maintained in constant contact with the pa king 9 and that the film therefore always retains the same well-defined and precise lateral position.
As shown in fig. 1 of the appended drawing, two devices for maintaining the lateral position of the film, exactly similar to each other, are arranged on either side of the corridor 4, (the so as to fixing the position of the film at the entry and exit thereof and thus maintain the entire section of film situated between these two points in the desired lateral position.
In the variant embodiment shown in fig. 4 to G, the installation comprises a tape P passing over an unwinder 1, in a wise step P, then in front of a reader 5 and finally in a passage P before being taken up by an unwinder 2.
Each passage P has a lateral wall 9 disposed perpendicularly to the plane of the tape as it passes in front of the reader and parallel to the direction of advance of the tape. At the base of this wall is arranged a support 12 defining the position in depth of one of the lateral edges of the tape engaged in the passage P. The second side of the passage is formed by a wall b inclined relative to the wall 9 and parallel to the direction of the film. The walls 9 and b thus define a passage of flared shape from its bottom defined by the support 12. In this alternative embodiment the support 11 is removed and the support 12 is located outside the plane in which is located the section of tape placed in front of the reader.
Thus, as in the variant embodiment described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3, the inherent elasticity of the tape tends to maintain, on the one hand, one of the edges of the latter in permanent contact with the support 12 and, on the other hand, the two lateral edges of the tape in contact with the walls 9 and b. Indeed, thanks to the inherent elasticity of the tape, the latter forms a loop 3, and it is sufficient for the two lateral edges of the tape to be kept permanently in contact with the walls 9 and b, to ensure that that the support 12 which defines the bottom of the passage P is located in front of the plane defined by the passage 4.
It is obvious that the device described can be applied to the guiding of any kind of ribbons, such as paper or steel ribbons bearing inscriptions, phonograms, etc., having to pass in front of a reader or a writer, mechanical, optical, electric, electromagnetic or cathode ray.
It is clear that this device can be adapted without hiding in its structural details to the type of tape to be guided and to the material of which the latter is composed.
If the section of tape passing through the passages P has exactly the nominal width, it slides on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the reader and defined by the support 12. If, on the other hand, the width of the tape has deviations by compared to the nominal value, the tape continues to rest by one of its edges on the support 12 and to remain in contact by its two lateral edges with the two sides of the passages. It follows that the plane of the film is then slightly inclined with respect to the plane perpendicular to the axis of the reader 5, the edge of the tape in contact with the inclined wall b being able to be higher or lower than the support. 12.
The plane of the section considered is therefore no longer strictly per pendicular to the optical axis, however the neck 4 maintains the section which passes in front of the reader in a plane strictly per pendicular to the axis of the reader.
In the event that the tape has insufficient longitudinal elasticity to keep one of its edges permanently in permanent contact with the support 12, it is possible, for example, to provide an elastic finger consisting of a leaf spring acting on said edge of the tape and keeping it permanently in contact with said support. In practice, it has been observed that the transverse rigidity of the tapes used is always sufficient to then ensure permanent contact of the two lateral edges thereof with the lateral walls of the passage P.
