Le corps du générateur représenté aux fig. 1 et 2 est constitué notamment par une cuve 31 à l'intérieur de laquelle est disposé un cylindre 32 ouvert vers le bas et formant la chambre de génération; dans cette cham bre se trouve le panier séparable 33 commu niquant vers le bas avec la cuve par des ou- vertures 34;
Le générateur représenté aux fi,)g. 1 et 2 comporte une chambre de compensation 66 qlui communique avec la chambre de généra tion 32 par une conduite 67 avec un orifice calibré réduit 68. Cette chambre de compen- sation a pour effet d'absorber progressive ment une certaine quantité de gaz en cas de surproduction (notamment à l'arrêt du géné rateur ou lors d'une faible consommation);
Lorsque la pression à l'intérieur du géné rateur atteint la valeur désirée, la membrane 8 se déplace vers le compartiment 7 en com primant le ressort 15 et entraînant la tubu lure 12 et le clapet 17 qui reste fermé, les tiges 18, 20 et le plateau de blocage 21;
Acetylene generator. The object of the invention is an acetylene generator of the so-called contact type, that is to say in which this gas is produced inside a generation chamber by the action of the surface of the gas. 'a body of water which wets calcium carbide resting on a perforated support when the pressure drops in the generation chamber and in which the water withdraws from below into a neighboring discharge chamber when the pressure of the acetylene rises in the generation chamber.
The object of the invention is to regulate the evolution of gas, to prevent or reduce overproduction as well as the exaggerated heating and the correlative phenomena of decomposition and polymerization of acetylene, to allow the use of carbide con broken to different train sizes without faulty operation and finally to ensure satisfactory production automaticity.
The characteristic of the invention consists in that the generator comprises a supply chamber intended to contain a reserve of carbide protected from water and arranged in the upper part of the generation chamber above the perforated support and above the level of the water, and that this feed chamber is provided with a device allowing the carbide to be dropped from the grid in successive fractions and that according to the needs. s do la, consumption.
Thus, as in the generators with usual contacts, any overproduction moves the water away from the carbide in reaction, but, in addition, in the generator which is the object of the invention, the residual moisture which then remains in contact. with carbide acts only on a limited portion of the total mass of carbide, the main reserve of which is protected from moisture; as a result, the overproduction is not prolonged excessively by causing excessive heating which could give rise to phenomena of polymerization and decomposition of the gas produced.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the fall of a carbide portion of the feed chamber is caused by a tilting of this chamber, controlled either by hand or automatically by pressure. reigning in the generator; the use of a rocking feed chamber at the. instead of a chamber provided with a drop orifice equipped with a shutter makes it possible to eliminate the risk of obstruction of such an orifice and, on the other hand, allows employment. of carbide in large pieces.
The automatic control of the feeding chamber can be carried out: to. using a spring-loaded piston combined with a flexible diaphragm that can be folded back to. the way of a thimble to allow a great amplitude of movement, or again, in the case of low pressure devices using a float provided in a raised container communicating from below with the generator tank.
The production can be regulated by a compensation chamber communicating with the generation chamber through a calibrated orifice whose flow rate is less than the maximum flow rate of the outlet pipe of this generation chamber.
The generator can be fitted with a diaphragm safety device established in such a way as to allow both automatic blocking of the fall system in the event of sufficient internal pressure and automatic safety evacuation in the event of excessive internal pressure. and finally the emptying of the generator controlled by hand independently of the two other functions above.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, some embodiments of the object of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a generator fitted with a compensation chamber, FIG. 1 being a sectional view of the generation chamber, while FIG. 2 shows in section the members of the automatic power supply control.
Figs. 3 and 4 show, respectively in cross section and in elevation, the tilting feed chamber of the generator of FIGS. 1 and 2.
Fig. 5 shows a low pressure generator in vertical section.
The fïg. 6 shows in elevation a similar generator with automatic control of the carbide drop by float.
Fig. 7 shows in section an embodiment of the automatic control device of the carbide drop, and FIG. 8 is a sectional view of a security device.
The body of the generator shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 consists in particular of a tank 31 inside which is arranged a cylinder 32 open downwards and forming the generation chamber; in this chamber is the separable basket 33 communicating downwards with the tank through openings 34;
this basket, the bottom of which receives the lime slurry from the decomposition of the carbide, comprises inside a horizontal grid 35 having a large central orifice 36 surmounted by a deflector 37 conical or in the form of a cupola which pours onto the screen the carbide falling from the top by preventing it from passing through orifice 36. The purpose of this construction is to avoid any obstruction of the screen, but it is obvious that one could use, instead of the grid, other perforated surface systems.
Inside the cylinder 32 and at its upper part is provided a -d'alementation chamber 38 which can tilt around its axis formed by two cylindrical end pieces 39, 40, the second of which ends in a flat part which engages in a corresponding slot milled in the end of the shaft 41; this shaft passes through the wall of the eylin- dire 32 by a stuffing box - and is provided with a control handle 42. The end pieces 39, 40 rest in U-shaped supports 43 open and flared upwards to facilitate the setting. room place 38.
The chamber 38 has an outlet corridor 44 which plunges inside this chamber to a certain depth, and the pitch from the chamber to the corridor can be adjusted by a shutter slide 45 which can be immobilized by the screw 46 to a depth corresponding to the section that we want to give to this passage.
The lever 42 can be operated either by hand or automatically. For this purpose, the lever 42 is connected, by a link 47 articulated, at 48 and 49, to the rod 50 of the piston 51, in oily leather for example, which can smooth inside the cylinder 52 under the ac tion of the pressure prevailing in this cylinder and of the antagonistic force of the spring 53, tan say that another tension spring 54, hooked to the handle 42, maintains the chamber 38 either in one or in the other from its two extreme positions,
in order to prevent it from immobilizing itself in an intermediate position in the event that the difference between the gas pressure and the force of the spring is not sufficient to overcome the friction resistances.
The lower part of the cylinder 52 communicates with the generation chamber 32 via the pipe 55 and the filter 56, while its upper part, separated from the outside by the stuffing box 57 through which the rod 50 passes, communicates with line 58; this is supplied by the filter 56 via a pressure reducer 59 and it leads to the consumption station through the hydraulic safety device 60. If the piston 51 is perfectly sealed or if it is replaced by a membrane, for example according to the arrangement of FIG. 7, it is possible to remove the stuffing box 57 and have the top of the cylinder 52 communicate with the atomosphere instead of making it communicate with the pipe 58.
The immersion height of the basket 33 is adjustable and, for this purpose, the basket can be lifted by a curved arm 61 integral with an external crank 62 actuated by the rack 63. The basket can be provided with side pockets, normally empty. , but which fill up and absorb excess water when the residual lime causes the water level in the generation chamber to rise beyond allowable limits. The same result can be obtained by arranging below the maximum water level of a small tank 64, the lower cap 65 of which is open at the time of filling and closed during operation.
The generator represented in fi,) g. 1 and 2 comprises a compensation chamber 66 which communicates with the generation chamber 32 via a pipe 67 with a reduced calibrated orifice 68. This compensation chamber has the effect of gradually absorbing a certain quantity of gas in the event of overproduction (in particular when the generator is shut down or when consumption is low);
the orifice 68 is established so that the gas flow between the two chambers 32-66 is much lower than the maximum consumption of -; az. The operation of the generator takes place as indicated below. After filling the tank of the generator with water to the appropriate level, the supply chamber 38 is set up, the shaft 41 being immobilized in its position for which its.
slot, which receives the flat of ('end 40, is vertical. After closing the cover and releasing the handle 42, the latter, under the action of the output 53, tilts at a certain angle, for example. of 120; at the start of this movement, the spring 54 exerts an antagonistic action then, towards the end of the movement, this spring acts in the same direction as the spring 53, so that the force which causes this movement increases progressively and that the mechanism can only go from one extreme position to the other without stopping halfway.
At the end of the movement, the passage 44 is oriented downwards (fig. 3) and part of the carbide contained in the chamber is precipitated on the grid (in particular that which is located in the immediate vicinity of the evacuation orifice. ), while most of the carbide from the feed chamber falls on the wall of the latter opposite the outlet.
When the pressure of the gas produced by the decomposition of the carbide has forced the water suf ficiently out of the chamber 32, the carbide of the grid is no longer totally submerged or not at all, and the dice gage continues depending on the water level as in contact generators. When the action of gas pressure under piston 51 exceeds that of spring 53, chamber 38 returns to the position of FIG. 1, aided towards the end of its movement by the spring 54.
A drop in pressure, resulting from consumption, causes the water level to rise in chamber 32 and the grid is again submerged; if carbide remains on this grid, gas is released again and if, on the contrary, there is not enough and the pressure drops sufficiently, the action of the spring 53 exceeds that of this pressure and a new carbide charge is precipitated on the submerged grid, as previously indicated. This operation thus continues automatically until the carbide is exhausted from the feed chamber.
When large carbide is to be used, the shutter 45 can be removed to give the carbide in chamber 38 a larger output pitch. The use of coarse carbide makes it possible to increase the load on the generator, because, after filling chamber 38, a few large pieces can be placed directly on the grid after having raised the basket which is then lowered after placing chamber 38 and closed the cover; the device then operates until the carbide of the grid is exhausted as a contact generator.
When using the generator for intermittent welding, it is beneficial to control the feed chamber 38 by hand, while the automatic control proves to be advantageous in shops where the welding stations work in a busy way. keep on going. The acetylene generator shown in FIG. 5 is constituted by a generation chamber 69 enlarged in its lower part and provided with a supply chamber 38 actuated by an external crank 70 and a basket 33, in which there is shown in place of the grid a surface formed by two superimposed planes 71, 72 joined together so as to provide passages for the water.
The water level is regulated by a simple threaded plug 73. The lower part of the chamber 69 communicates by a tube 74 with a reservoir 75 arranged at a certain height according to the pressure which one wishes to obtain; this tank contains a float 76 on which can be fixed a water level indicator 77 visible from the outside.
The tank see 75 plays the role of the tank 31 of FIGS. 1 and 2 ; if the level drops, the user must actuate the crank 70 to drop a load of earbure on the planes 71, 72, The generator of fig. 6 is similar to that of FIG. 5, but includes an automatic device for controlling the chamber 38.
This device consists of a lever 78 which can rotate around the fixed point 79 and whose free end is engaged between two plates 80, 81 integral with the float 76, while the other end is connected by a rod 82 to the a crank 70 whose axis can be integral with an auxiliary arm 83 to which is hooked the spring 84 which plays the role of the spring 54 described above. When the water level begins to drop below an average value, the crank 70 is raised, the arm 83 passes the vertical position and the spring 84 completes the tilting of the feed chamber 38.
There is shown in FIG. 7 an improved device for replacing the piston 51 of FIG. 2 and produce a mobile system with great amplitude and perfectly sealed, sensitive to the pressure to ensure the automatic control of the supply chamber 38. This device consists in particular of a cylinder and a piston between which is interposed a flexible membrane capable of being folded up like a thimble between the piston and the cylinder.
The piston 85, mounted on a rod 86, can move at. inside the cylinder 87. The outer edge of the diaphragm 88 is clamped between the cylinder head 89 and the cylinder 87, while the bottom of the diaphragm is clamped between the piston 85 and the disc 90. Front. its assembly, the lateral wall of the membrane has the general shape of a truncated cone, the small base of which is connected to the flat bottom of the membrane: it is the large base that is fixed to the cylinder. Inside the piston may be mounted a spring 91 intended to oppose the action of the pressure exerted on the opposite face of the membrane.
If this pressure drops, the res comes out pushes 14 piston and the. membrane is folded in 92 like a thermowell, constantly ensuring a tight seal.
In the example shown. To. fig. 8, the device. safety device shown is contained in a housing 1 mounted in any suitable manner on the wall 2 of the acetylene generator. For this purpose, on the wall 2 may for example be welded a part 3 forming a nut into which is screwed the threaded base 4 integral with the housing 1, sealing can be ensured by a washer 5 interposed between the housing 1 and the nut 3.
The interior of the housing 1 is divided into two compartments 6 and 7 by a flexible membrane 8, the periphery of which can be clamped between the flanges 9 of the two halves of the housing 1; compartments 6 and 7 communicate respectively with the interior of the generator and with the atmosphere, as will be explained below. The center of the membrane 8 is clamped between the plates 10, 11 screwed onto the exhaust pipe 12 which is thus secured to the membrane; on this tubing are also screwed the sleeve 13 in the compartment 6 and the cap 14 in the compartment 7. The displacement of the membrane 8 towards the compartment 7 is effected against the action of two compression springs 15 and 16 which are arranged around the tube 12 and rest on the plate 11.
The end of the tubing 12 on the side of the compartment 6 forms an annular seat for a valve 17 integral with an operating rod 18 which passes inside the tubing 12 and passes through the stopper 14 to end. ner on the outside by a push button of mnan # work 19. On the generator side, the rod 18 is extended by a rod 20 which passes through the base 4 and ends with a locking plate 21 intended to act on a finger 22 integral with the rotary feed tank 23 which contains the reserve of carbide and the tilting of which causes the fall of this carbide in small portions.
A spring 24 interposed between the bottom of the base 4 and the valve 17 tends to hold the latter against the annular seat of the exhaust manifold 12.
Communication between the generator and the compartment 6 is ensured by holes 25 made in the bottom of the base 7 and a hole 26 made in the sleeve 13 which, in the normal position, abuts against the base 4, limiting movement. from the membrane 8 to the generator. One or more holes 27 are, on the other hand, formed in the pipe 12 to communicate the interior of this pipe with the compartment 7 which itself communicates with the atmosphere through a hole 28 formed in the housing 1.
The operation of the device is as follows: The pressure of the gas produced in the generator is exerted in the compartment 6 through the holes 25 and 26 and tends to push the membrane 8 towards the compartment 7 which communicates with the 'outside through the hole 28. In the position of the drawing, this pressure is not sufficient to overcome the action of the spring 15 which maintains the membrane towards the compartment 6, the sleeve 13 abutting against the base 4.
In this position of the drawing, the valve closes the pipe 12 under the action of its spring 24, and the plate 21, spaced from the base 4, is not opposite the finger 22, so that the reservoir of The power supply can maneuver freely allowing both the drop of the carbide and the production of gas.
When the pressure inside the generator reaches the desired value, the membrane 8 moves towards the compartment 7 by compressing the spring 15 and driving the tube 12 and the valve 17 which remains closed, the rods 18, 20 and the locking plate 21;
in this movement, the stopper 14 moves inside the opening made for this purpose in the body 1 and the spring 16 moves in a general movement without compri mer and therefore remaining inactive. While moving, the plate 21 comes opposite the finger 22 which would therefore abut on the periphery of this plate in the event of an initiation of tilting of the tank 23. so that this tilting is made impossible: it there can be no carbide drop.
If the internal pressure continues to increase, the membrane 8 moves further towards the compartment 7, and the end of the spring 16, which protrudes laterally around the cha skin 14, abuts against the housing 1, then adding its action to that. spring 15. When the pressure reaches the upper allowable limit, it is strong enough to compress the two springs 15, 16, and the diaphragm still moves towards the compartment 7, driving the pipe 12, but the valve 17, integral with the rod 20 cannot follow, because the plate 21 abuts against the base 4: the excess gas can then escape to the outside through the passages 25, 26, the pipe 12 and the passages 27, 28 .
A drop in pressure inside the generator causes the diaphragm to reverse movement and return to the drawing position.
Whatever the position of the membrane, the generator can be emptied of its contents by pressing the button 19 which, by means of the rod 18, releases the valve 17 from its annular seat and allows the exhaust. gas through the same passages as when the valve opens automatically.
It is obvious that the examples described above and shown in the appended drawing are in no way limiting and that various constructive modifications could be envisaged without departing from the scope of the invention.
