Fig. 6 est une vue en bout dans la direc tion de la Dèche B de la fig. 4.

Writing instrument. The present invention relates to a writing instrument, in which the writing tip comprises a ball rotatably mounted in a support from which it emerges, this ball being supplied with ink from a reservoir by a supply duct which communicates with the base of the aforesaid support, so that when the ball is rotated by displacement on a surface with which it is in contact, for example on a sheet of paper, a thin film of ink is transported by the .
ball through the narrow space between it and its support, this ink film leaving a mark on said surface.
The invention provides, for a writing instrument of the type mentioned above, a reservoir comprising several channels in parallel. The expression "in parallel" is used here in a sense analogous to that used in electricity rather than in the strictly geometric sense, although it is also preferred that said channels are geometrically parallel to each other.
A common supply duct is preferably provided for supplying ink from the channels to the ball; the channels are open at places far from the ball, so that their ink conduits are subjected to the pressure of the air.
According to a subsidiary character of the invention, the channels are capillary; the common supply duct is preferably also capillary.
The channels advantageously comprise rectilinear portions extending along the reservoir; such channels can be arranged around the axis of the tank and, in a particular construction, they are housed in one another.
The tank can be attached to a tip or end to. write in metal, constructed separately, and itself constituting the support of the ball.
The appended drawing represents, by way of examples, several embodiments of the object of the invention FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section through a reservoir of a first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of this reservoir seen in the direction of the arrow B in FIG. 1., Fig. 3 is a cross section of this reservoir seen in the direction of the arrow A in FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a tank according to a second embodiment.
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken along the line A-A of FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is an end view looking in the direction of Drill B of FIG. 4. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of a tank according to a third embodiment.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view on a larger scale showing the point or the end to be written, attached to the end of a reservoir.
Fig. 9 is a partial section on a larger scale of the ball bush, and FIG. 10 is a plan view without the ball.
The reservoir shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, comprises three tubes 1, 2, 3 arranged one inside the other, so as to leave a central cylindrical channel 4 and concentric annular channels 5 and 6. The diameter of the central channel 4 preferably does not exceed 2.5 mm, and the radial width of each annular channel 5 and 6 is preferably not greater than 1.6 mm.
These channels consequently have capillary dimensions, that is to say such that they retain the ink by capillary action. The three tubes have the same length and are mounted at one end in a plug 7, and at the other end in a plug 8; this plug 8 has holes 9 communicating with the three channels These channels are, therefore, open to rights away from the ball (as will be described later) so that their contents are subjected to atmospheric pressure.
The stopper 7 comprises an axial extension or nozzle 10 having a common supply duct 11 of ca pillar dimensions, and the three aforementioned channels communicate with this duct 11 through the intermediary of orifices 12 and slots 13 formed in the plug 7. The nozzle 10 is arranged so as to be connected to the end to be written, as will be described later, and is provided for this purpose with a screw thread 14. It can also be externally threaded. , as shown in 15 to facilitate mounting of the reservoir in the body or casing of the instrument.
In the modified embodiment shown in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, the reservoir carries a cylindrical body 16 provided with an fitting 10 comprising a common supply duct 11. The body 16 has four axial bores 17 constituting capillary ducts arranged around the axis. of the tank see, as shown in fig. 5. At their ends remote from the ball, these channels have small holes 18 for air.
Fig. 7 shows another embodiment in which the reservoir, instead of comprising conduits 17 having holes 18 in axial alignment with each of said conduits, comprises conduits 17 folded back by 180 and provided with holes 18 at the end. closed end of the folded parts which are directed towards the ball.
Fig. 8 shows the nozzle 10 of the reservoir, see attached to a point or end to be written 19. This end to be written has a bore 20 forming the continuation of the supply duct 11, this bore having a diameter of 1 mm. At its upper end, said bore opens into a short orifice 21 preferably having a diameter of 0.5 mm and which, in turn, communicates with the base of the housing 22 in which the rotary writing ball 28 is fixed. . The ball has a diameter of 1 mm and is preferably made of metal, for example steel. It can be very smooth on the outside or shaped in some other way if desired.
In the manufacture of the ball seat, the end of the point 19 is first hollowed out to a diameter of 1 mm and the base of the hollow is then shaped into an inverted triangular pyramid using a suitable punch. The angle formed by each face of the punch with the axis of the latter is preferably between 45 and 65.
Seats 24, partially spherical (fig. 10), are then formed in the faces of the pyramid, by pressing a ball 1 mm in diameter. After these seats have been formed, the writing ball 23 is inserted and is then secured by hammering, stamping, crimping or the like, which, as shown in FIG. 9, tighten the edge of the support over the "equator" of the ball. In carrying out this process, care will be taken to ensure that the play between the ball 23 and its support does not exceed 1 X 10-3 cm.
The member 19 is preferably made of an unassailable and stainless metal, or of a suitably protected metal, such as anodized duraluminum. Seats 24 can be plated if desired.
The reservoir is filled with a viscous ink having lubricating properties; the viscosity of this ink is preferably not less than 15 poises at all temperatures which the instrument reaches in normal use. The ink contains an oleaginous solvent, an adhesive thickening agent and a colorant. The solvent can, for example, be olein, castor oil, ricinoleic acid or a combination thereof; rosin is a suitable adhesive thickening agent, and the dyes can be incorporated by a combination of solutions, a colloidal suspension, or any combination thereof.
An ink suitable for the described instrument can be made from the following ingredients, the proportions of which may vary within the limits indicated.

In addition, it can be used in airplanes, even for flights at high altitudes. The reservoir nibs used heretofore are not suitable for use in aircraft, since atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing elevation of the aircraft, causing the fluid ink to be reduced. sucked out of the pen reservoir.
This difficulty has not been encountered in instruments such as the one described, which, by virtue of their construction (having, as has been indicated, an uninterrupted ink stream) can be subjected to any variation of atmospheric pressure without adverse effect. If desired, the color of the ink stream at or near the open end of the tube or each tube may be different from that of the other part of the tube or each tube, so that when the The instrument is almost ready to receive a charge of fresh ink, the user will notice a change in the color of his writing.
