Process for the preparation of p-chlorophenol dichlorovinyl ether. The present invention relates to a process for the production of p-chlorophenol dichlorovinyl ether; it is characterized in that an alkali metal salt of p-chlorophenol is reacted with trichlorethylene in the presence of a solvent.
The p-chlorophenol dichlorovinyl ether obtained forms a colorless oil which passes over at 124-126 ° C. in a vacuum of 13 mm. The new dichloro vinyl ether is resistant to boiling water, boiling ver dilute aqueous-alcoholic hydrochloric acid or dilute alcoholic caustic alkali solutions and can be used as an intermediate for various purposes, such as.
B. for the dye industry, for the production of pesticides or as pesticides, especially as insecticides, use.
Suitable solvents are both water and organic, aqueous or anhydrous solvents, in particular the aliphatic alcohols, such as. B. ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and tertiary amyl alcohol, as well as phenols and the like.
The trichlorethylene is preferably used in a slight excess. The conversion takes place under normal pressure by refluxing; It is more advantageous, however, to work under pressure and at an elevated temperature, and the reaction time can be varied within wide limits depending on the temperature chosen.
Example: 12.8 parts by weight of p-chlorophenol are dissolved in a solution of 2.3 parts by weight of sodium in 40 parts by volume of absolute alcohol, 15 parts by weight of trichlorethylene are added to this solution and the mixture is heated for 24 hours in a closed vessel at 120-J130 C.
For work-up, the reaction solution is taken up in water and ether, with the precipitated common salt at the same time going into solution; the ether layer is then washed with dilute lye and water, dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate and the solvent is distilled off. The residue is fractionated in vacuo. The p-chlorophenol dichloro vinyl ether obtained distills as a colorless 0'1 in a vacuum of 13 mm at 124-126 C.
If the same mixture is refluxed for three days, p-chlorophenol dichlorovinyl ether is also obtained, but in a significantly poorer yield.
Isopropyl alcohol, tertiary amyl alcohol or p-chlorophenol can also be used instead of the absolute alcohol; In this case, the sodium phenolate is first prepared, this is dissolved in the alcohol concerned and treated further as described above while increasing the reaction temperature to 180-190 ° C. Is used in aqueous, e.g.
If, for example, 75% alcohol or water is used as the solvent, a solution of the sodium phenalate is first prepared in it, the required amount of trichlorethylene is added and the mixture is then heated to 120-130 ° C. for 20 hours in a closed vessel heated.
The p-chlorophenol dichlorovinyl ether is not changed by boiling with water for 16 hours, just as little by boiling for 24 hours with dilute aqueous-alcoholic hydrochloric acid or by boiling for 5 hours with 0.5N alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution.
