Process for the production of a tanning condensation product. It has been found that valuable condensation products with a tanning effect are obtained if mixtures of dioxydiarylsulphones and dioxydiarylsulphonic acids in an acidic medium with urea and formaldehyde hyd or. their condensation products condensed.
The mixtures of sulfonated and unsulfonated dioxydiarylsulfones can be prepared by mixing the individual components, with the possibility of using any defined mixing ratios of sulfonated and unsulfonated compounds of the dioxydiarylsulfone series. But you can also Dioxydiaryl- sulfones, be it pure compounds or mixtures, z.
B. mixtures of isomers or homologues, ansulfonate, d. H. Treat with such amounts of sulfonating agent under such conditions that no sulfonation occurs, and the sulfonation mixtures directly with urea and formaldehyde or hydrated. their condensation products condense.
In all cases, the proportion of sulfonated dioxydiarylsulfone must be so great that, after condensation with urea and formaldehyde, products are formed which are soluble in a weakly acidic medium.
Concentrated sulfuric acid, oleum, chlorosulfonic acid, etc. come into consideration as sulfonating agents. The sulfonation can be carried out by heating dioxydiarylsulfones and sulfonating agents under normal or reduced pressure, with air being passed through and also in the presence of diluents or dehydrating agents such as fatty acids, acid anhydrides, etc.
If necessary, it is diluted with a little water before the condensation; in some cases it is also an advantage to blunt the excess acid. Then the urea is first dissolved in the mixture of dioxydiarylsulfone and dioxydiarylsulfonsulfonic acid and the formaldehyde is then added. However, you can also first dissolve the urea in the formaldehyde and slowly add this solution to the mixture of dioxydiarylsulfone-dioxydiarylsulfonsulfonic acid.
Finally, elarnea-formaldehyde condensation products such. B. Dimethylol urea find use.
Another possible variation is that the urea can be partially replaced by a biuret. Both pure biuret and the technical product, which is obtained by heating urea to around 150 for a long time, can be used here. In all cases, however, the proportion of biuret may only be so large that the products formed after the condensation are soluble in an acidic medium.
The condensation is carried out at ordinary or elevated temperature. Temperatures of 45-60 have proven to be particularly advantageous, but higher temperatures can also be used, although the possibility of a reaction course which has a rather unfavorable influence on the lightfastness of the end products must be taken into account. It is then neutralized and weakly acidified with organic acids such as formic, acetic, oxalic acid, etc.
If value is placed on special low-salt products, more or less salt-free components can be assumed, or the excess of sulfonating agent at any stage of the production in a known manner, eg. B. by liming. removed. In some cases, treatment with brightening agents such as zinc dust, aluminum powder, sodium hydrosulphite, animal charcoal, oxalic acid or the like is also advantageous.
The condensation products thus obtainable are excellent tanning agents; they provide white, very full and soft leathers of excellent lightfastness.
It has already been proposed to condense 4,4'-dioxydiphenyl sulfone in the form of its sulfonic acid with urea and formaldehyde. In this known method, however, a large excess of sulfonating agent is used, so that sulfonation occurs; the tannins produced in this way only result in low-quality, flat and tinny leather.
It was also proposed to condense 4,4'-dioxydiphenyl sulfone with urea and formaldehyde and convert the resulting resin into soluble form by fusing it with naphthalene sulfonic acid. Compared to this process, the condensation products L-der produced according to the invention result in significantly better light fastness.
Finally, a method is known. which consists in that mixtures of dioxydiaryl, sulfones and phenolsulfonic acids, optionally after previous sulfonation, are condensed with urea and formaldehyde. In contrast, the leathers available with the new condensation products are characterized by a significantly greater body and softness.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of a tanning condensation product. The process is characterized in that a mixture of 4,4'-dioxydiphenylsulfone and 4,4'-dioxydiphenylsulfonsulfonic acid, as can be obtained by sulfonating 4,4'-dioxydiphenylsulfone with a sulfonating agent at increased Let temperature, formaldehyde and urea interact.
The resulting solution of the new condensation product provides after neutralization. and weak acidification with an organic acid represent a tanning agent that delivers very full, soft and lightfast leather.
Example 1 100 parts by weight of 4,4'-dioxydiphenyl sulfone are heated to 145 to 150 parts by weight for 4 hours with 40 parts by weight of sulfuric acid monohydrate. As the titration of the reaction mass shows, around 60% of the sulfuric acid used enters the sulfone.
After cooling, the melt is diluted with water and 18 parts by weight of urea are added. As soon as the urea has dissolved, 60 parts by weight of 30% formaldehyde are added dropwise at 45-50 and then held at the same temperature for a further 20 hours. The condensation product is neutralized and weakly acidified with formic acid.
Example 2: 100 parts by weight of 4,4'-dioxydiphenylsulphone are, as described in Example 1, sulphonated and, after cooling and dilution, gradually mixed with a condensation product, which by 1 / Boiling 80 parts by weight of formaldehyde 30% and 24 parts by weight of urea in a weakly phenolphthalein alkaline medium for 2 hours.
The mixture is condensed for 17 hours at 45-50, neutralized and acidified with an organic acid.
