Setzt man z.
The process of making an adhesive. Since with the known adhesives in film or powder form based on urea and formaldehyde it is impossible to add a hardener to the adhesives available on the market, because this would cause the adhesive to harden prematurely, a so-called double layered film proposed in which the adhesive, namely a urea-formaldehyde condensation product, and the hardener ter through a protective layer, eg.
B. made of colophonium, which is solid at normal temperature but melts below the glueing temperature, are arranged separately from one another on the carrier. This has the disadvantage that the adhesive carrier, e.g. B. a paper web, one after the other with three different layers which must be provided.
Furthermore, a dry glue film from urea-formaldehyde resins has been produced without such a protective layer by allowing the condensation to take place using the egothermal heat of reaction. The resin was therefore produced at an almost constant temperature, with cooling if necessary, in order to avoid an undesirable temperature increase. The reaction was carried out in the presence of acids or weakly acidic salts at p, H values of 3-6 and at temperatures around 50.degree.
The molar ratio was 1 mol of urea to 2-2i / 2 mol of formaldehyde at a pH of about 3. This creates a white powder or a white colloidal dispersion of acidic reaction with pH values of 3i - 6. The reaction of this primary reaction product is increased to a pH value of 5 \ 6 by adding hegamethylenetetramine and acidified again by adding an acidic catalyst, ammonium sulfate.
The resin has a constantly strong acidic reaction, which is seen as necessary to ensure a sufficiently rapid course of the curing reaction during the subsequent pressing under pressure and heat. This film is not durable, since premature polymerisation of the resin under the influence of the acidic catalyst already occurs at normal temperature during storage.
The invention relates to a method for producing an adhesive, in particular in film or powder form, based on condensation products of ureas and aldehydes, and aims to eliminate the disadvantages mentioned. The invention also applies to an adhesive produced by the method according to the invention, in particular in film or powder form.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that using an aqueous condensation solution which has a primary condensation product of urea and aldehydes and a pH not below 7, acidic catalysts and bases, which the catalysts during the storage period of the Adhesive means put out of action and when using the adhesive release the catalysts under the effect of pressure and heat, a mixture is produced.
Depending on whether a glue film or glue powder is to be produced, the catalysts and bases can either be added to the condensation solution itself or to a powder produced from the latter. The catalysts can be acidic per se or be suitable for splitting off acid.
The primary condensation product can be prepared by processes known per se, with or without the supply of pressure and heat, the reaction, e.g. B. at a pH value of 5-7, can be neutral or weakly acidic and as reaction components such as: urea, T'hio @ urea on the one hand and formaldehyde on the other hand in a molar ratio of 1 mol urea (resp. Thiourea) to 1-3 moles of formaldehyde can be used.
If this condensation solution is not already neutral, its p $ must be set to 7 or even higher before further treatment with the catalyst and protective agent takes place. As useful catalysts in connec tion with protective or inactivating agents have z. B. weak acids such as acetic acid, oxalic acid, benzoic acid, phthalic acid, tartaric acid and their salts, fer ner acidic reacting .Salze of inorganic acids, z.
B. ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate and salts of chloric acid and perchloric acid, and esters of organic or inorganic acids, e.g. B. diethyloxalate, triphenyl phosphate.
Usable protective or inactivating agents are inorganic or organic bases, such as. B. ammonia, hexamethylene tetramine, alkaline earth metal hydroxide, alkali metal hydroxide, triethanolamine and hydrazine or hydroxylamine derivatives.
When the adhesive is used, these inactivating agents are partly involved in the resin formation reaction, e.g. B. ammonia or hexamethylenetetramine, sometimes they act on the course of the reaction merely through their presence as a contact agent and buffer substance, d. H. they regulate the acidity and alkalinity, such as alkali hydroxide.
It has been shown that optimal properties of the adhesive in terms of storage stability and curing speed can be achieved if both types of protective agents are added together to the primary condensation product, in a specific ratio depending on the case, such that the additives give the primary condensation solution a neutral, weakly alkaline or at most weakly acidic reaction between PH 6 and PH 8. i It was also observed that this equilibrium around the neutrality point is broken during the adhesive process in the heat and that this is important.
This phenomenon is likely to be due to the fact that the protective agents take part in whole or in part in the reaction and only then release the catalyst. If you put z. If, for example, an indicator color is added to the condensation solution, one can observe the occurrence of a strongly acidic reaction during the hot glueing process, although a neutral reaction had prevailed during the soaking and drying and was retained in the adhesive for months.
By properly dimensioning the catalyst and protective agents you can dry the adhesive at increased, z. B. perform temperatures above 60 C, always assuming that the reaction of the impregnation solution is neutral, slightly alkaline or at most very slightly acidic.
It was also observed that the durability of the impregnation solution in no proportion to the durability of the dry adhesive, e.g. B. the dry film stands. So z. For example, the impregnation solution irreversibly gelated a few weeks after the addition of the catalyst and protective agents, while the dry film made from it has a shelf life of months.
According to test results, the explanation for this behavior is likely to be that the condensation reaction in the dry state is prevented from proceeding to such an extent that it is practically irrelevant. It is therefore advisable to dry the condensation solution to such an extent that the humidity is below 5%, where the progress of the condensation reaction under the action of the catalyst stops it at normal temperature, but starts again under the influence of the pressing temperature.
In the production of dry films based on urea BEZW. Thiourea and formaldehyde have so far posed difficulties because the condensation product is hygroscopic after drying on the Trä, which makes it difficult to roll up the film web before use and make its use impossible. Tests have shown that these hygroscopic properties are eliminated by adding certain substances to the condensation solution, while at the same time the suppleness, flowability and water resistance can be regulated within wide limits.
For this purpose, substances that take part in the reaction, such as. B. urea, thiourea, melamine, urethane and / or their derivatives, but also phenol, resorcinol, cyanamide, dicyandiamide and / or condensation products from these with aldehydes. You can also proceed in such a way that you first dry the condensation solution and then add these substances to it.
Next from the experiments he gave that the degree of condensation of the primary condensation product on the properties and the external nature of the adhesive, eg. B. the glue film, has a great influence. Condensation products with a low degree of condensation give z. B.
thin films of higher flowability and require longer curing times compared with films in which the condensation product has a higher degree of condensation under otherwise identical conditions. As a result, the adhesive can be adapted within wide limits to the changing pressing conditions by using a condensation solution in which the primary condensation products are still completely (i.e.
real) are dissolved in water, and on the other hand one from which the condensation products are already precipitated when diluted with water, although the solution, which contains typical fusion colloids, still has a certain dilutability with water.
According to the method, not only can a dry glue film be produced, but it is also possible, for example, by pulverizing the film to obtain an adhesive that can be made paintable by dissolving it in water. On the other hand, by drying the solution provided with the catalyst and protective agent, a glue powder can be obtained, which can be applied by dissolving in water or simply by dusting on the surfaces to be bonded, e.g. B. wood veneer can be used.
Furthermore, you can evaporate the primary neutral condensation solution to dryness and add the calculated amounts of catalyst and .Schutzmittel in dry form and finely ground in a ball mill. The adhesive obtained in this way proves to be durable for months in the dry state, and the glue made from it can be pressed at 100-110 C in the times usual in industry.
Example 1: 1 & 00 parts by weight of formaldehyde 3.5 to 40% by volume and 6'5.0 parts of urine are at a pH of about 5.0 under pressure at 100 C for about three hours long condensed. This condensation product is neutralized so that pH == 7.
1000 parts by weight of this approximately 50% solution are mixed with 25 g of resorcinol, dissolved in a little alcohol, and then an aqueous suspension of 18 parts by weight of ammonium sulfate, 1.15 parts by weight of calcium hydroxide and 10 to 15 em 'of concentrated ammonia is added to this mixture added, the reaction in the impregnation solution becoming weakly alkaline.
A porous paper web of 2'0 g / m 'is soaked in this solution and dried at temperatures between 50 and 70 ° C. The film obtained is unchanged for months and can be used for gluing z. B. veneer discs can be pressed together at 1010-110 C and 10-20 kg / cm \ pressure in 6-10 minutes.
Example 2: 180'0 parts by weight of formaldehyde 3.5 to 10% by volume, 3.50 parts by weight of urea and 300 parts by weight of thiourea are heated to 100 ° C. in a reflux condenser for about 1 hour at a pH of about 4-G condenses until a water-dilutable emulsion is formed. After neutralization, 1000 parts by weight of this condensation solution are mixed with 2100 parts of a resin solution of urea-formaldehyde, obtained by acid condensation.
Finally, an aqueous suspension is added which contains 10 parts by weight of diethyl oxalate, 1, 5 parts by weight of caustic potash and 10-20 parts of concentrated ammonia, the impregnation solution receiving a very weak alkali reaction. Further production of the film according to Example 1.
Depending on how the condensation is carried out in the primary condensation solution and the nature of the catalyst, the impregnation solution can produce either an extremely hygroscopic and pliable or a glassy and brittle film.
These properties can now be changed by adding certain substances, in example 1 resorcinol, in example 2 a special urea-formaldehyde condensation product. In this way, the properties of the film can be adapted to special requirements with regard to durability and curing speed, freedom from tack, etc.
Example 3: The film obtained according to Example 1 or 2 is pulverized. From the powder a glue is Herge by adding water, which after brushing z. B. on veneer and drying, as specified under Example 1., can be pressed. Example The impregnation solution given in example 1 or 2 is evaporated to dryness in a vacuum at about ss0 C, pulverized and treated as given in example 3.
Example 5: 1000 g of primary condensation product as in example 1 and 2 are evaporated to dryness in vacuo at about 60.degree. 10 g of benzoic acid, 0.75 g of caustic potash and 20 g of hexamethylene tetramine are added to the dry residue, and the mixture is ground in a ball mill. He holds a durable glue powder that can be used in the manner indicated in Example 3 who can.
