Foam insulation compound based on synthetic resin. Resin-based porous compositions have been proposed for various purposes. Foam compounds with a very low density (D = approximately 0.01-0.1) based on phenolic resins and, in particular, urea resins are used as insulating materials for cold, heat or sound.
These masses have the disadvantage of insufficient mechanical strength, insufficient volume stability and still insufficient water resistance. For thermal insulation, such as the insulation of steam lines, their inadequate heat resistance is a nuisance.
It has now been found that these deficiencies can be remedied by using the melamine resins known per se in place of the phenolic or urea resins. The new foam compositions have, in accordance with the properties of the melamine resins, improved resistance to hot water and increased heat resistance.
The melamine resin foam moss has other advantages over the previously known foam masses, which are of great importance for their usability in insulation technology and were by no means to be expected: 1.
The volume stability improves significantly; growing and. Shrinkage of the foam material with changing air humidity goes back to about half the value that the urea foam masses have.
2. The water vapor absorption with changing air humidity is only about half as large as that of the urea foam masses.
Ä. The mechanical strength increases to twice or more than that of the urea foam masses.
4. The water resistance is also greatly improved; In boiling water, the material no longer softens and it does not deform when it dries again.
This surprising improvement in the foam compositions makes it possible to close the areas of application of the known urea foam compositions much better.
The melamine resin foam compositions can be produced by the most varied of methods known per se, of which foaming. of aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic melamine resin solutions, which advantageously contain curing agents and / or foaming agents, is particularly suitable. It is also easy to create foams of very low densities, e. B. of 0.03-0.015.
The resins described in French patent specification No. 811804 are particularly suitable as melamine resins, acidic substances as hardeners and surface-active natural or synthetic substances as foaming agents, which, like saponin, produce stable foams with water.
The easiest way to produce the foams is to use an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic melamine resin solution in the presence of hardening agents and foaming agents, e.g. B. is foamed by means of a high-speed stirrer. Stirring in air or gas increases the volume of the solution many times over, e.g. B. to 40 times the volume of the aqueous solution.
The foaming can, however, also take place according to other methods. The foam is filled into the form, left to stand, post-dried and, if desired, post-cured. In order to avoid the formation of cracks, drying must be carried out in an appropriate manner. For example, dry slowly or using a humid atmosphere so that the inner parts can release the water before the outer parts shrink so that cracks appear. White foam masses are obtained which are extremely light but are mechanically surprisingly strong in relation to their density.
If desired, they can be colored in the course of their production or afterwards. Likewise, if desired, fillers of various types can be added, e.g. B. cork flour or grit, glass fibers, pulp, asbestos fibers or diatomaceous earth. The inventive foam compositions can be used for insulation purposes in the construction industry, as thermal insulation, as insulation for refrigerators, cold stores, etc., as sound insulation for ceiling panels and the like.
The following statements show the most important properties of the new foam compositions in comparison to the known foam compositions based on urea resin.
For an insulating material, its behavior towards changing air humidity is very important, as this behavior is responsible for the formation of gaps and cracks due to excessive growth and shrinkage and for any deterioration in the insulation effect due to excessive absorption of air humidity.
In order to demonstrate these relationships, the comparative materials, foam composition based on urea and melamine resin, were in the form of plates of approximately. 1-2 cm thick every 24 hours at cinnamon temperature, exposed alternately to an air atmosphere of 100% moisture and one of 10% moisture.
In the following tables A and B the results for urea resin foam compounds (D = 0.015) and melamine resin foam compounds (D = 0.016 and D = 0.023) are combined posed:

D. Resistance to boiling water If urea resin foam is treated in boiling water for 10 minutes, it will soak up completely with water. The weight gain is approximately 4500%. In the subsequent drying, he then occurs considerable deformation.
With the same treatment with boiling water, the melamine resin foam shows a weight increase of only about 1000-1600%. When drying it remains practically unchanged; Unexpectedly, there is no deformation here. Porous gels based on melamine resins are already known, but they have a density of 0.300-0.500 and are therefore unsuitable as insulating material for the purpose described here.
Example: 110 parts by weight of laminate resin are dissolved in 220 parts by volume of lukewarm water and the solution is cooled down again to 250 . If necessary, formic acid is used to neutralize lacmus.
A second solution is prepared by adding 1.1 parts by volume of the sodium disulfonate of N-benzyl-, u-heptadecyl-benzimidazole in 88 parts by volume of water. But you can also use another foam agent, e.g.
B. 2 parts by weight of a butylated naphthalenesulfonic acid or its sodium salt, use. Immediately before use, 2.2 parts by volume of 85% formic acid are added to this solution. Instead of formic acid, other acids can also be used.
The second solution is poured into the resin solution while stirring well and the mixture is foamed over 2-5 minutes using a high-speed stirrer with a wire whip. After this time the foam is quite firm, homogeneous and can be shaped. The mass is left to its own devices for a few hours or overnight, during which it solidifies. It is then removed from the mold and left to air dry at room temperature for an extended period of time.
Foam compositions with the properties mentioned in the description are obtained, the density of which can easily be controlled by the concentration, temperature and any additives in the solution, as well as by the duration of the foaming and the type of foaming apparatus.
Subsequent treatment of the fittings at elevated temperatures, e.g. B. 40-150 or .above, the mechanical Fe strength of the mass improves significantly.
The melamine resin used in this example is prepared by allowing 3 moles of formaldehyde to act on 1 mole of melanin at a pH = 8.5-9 and at the boiling point until a cooled sample precipitates when diluted with 2-5 volumes of water whereupon the solution, if desired in a vacuum. is dried. Of course, you can also use the freshly prepared condensation solution directly. or use after setting to the desired concentration.
