Man erzielt da durch den erheblichen Vorteil, dass bei diese n hohen Temperaturen - der Scbmelzlninkt de.s iif,etliaerylamids beträgt nur 10(;
Acetoncyanhydrin finit 1.5 Mol. Schwefelsäure bei 11(1-120" inner halb 20 Minuten vermischt.
so sind nach he enrletem Zulauf schon zirka 0,70 Mol. in i@lethaerylamid übergegaiigeii.
zum Beispiel eine Lö sung von #.lethacrylamid in Schwefelsäure und gegebenenfalls Acetoncyanhydrin. und durch Rühren und Kühlen eine Temperatur von 110-120" eingehalten wird. laufend Aeetonc@#aiih\-drin und Schwefelsäure zuflie ssen lässt, WI ;
Process for the preparation of 3Iethaerylamide. As is known, methacrylamide can be produced from acetone cyanohydrin by treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid, the acetone cyanohydrin being rearranged in methacrylamide. The amide can then be converted into the ester in the usual way, for example with alcohol, or isolated as such, for example after the acid has been blunted with a base by extraction or evaporation of the aqueous solution.
The present invention relates to a new type of preparation of methacrylamide by the action of sulfuric acid on acetone cy anhydrin.
The reaction between sulfuric acid and acetone cyanohydrin takes place with strong heat generation, which makes it considerably more difficult to regulate the course of the reaction. If you keep the temperature too low by cooling too much, the reaction mass becomes so viscous that heat dissipation and continuation of the reaction is hardly possible. If the temperature is allowed to rise too high, however, decomposition suddenly takes place with the development of hydrocyanic acid, which is not only lossy, but also very dangerous for larger batches.
According to the known processes, one works in such a way that 1 mol. Acetone C5 # anhydrin is slowly added to 1-1.5 mol. Sulfuric acid of about 100% with stirring. The reaction temperature is kept at 6'0-80 ° C. by strong cooling. The mass becomes thicker and more viscous and pasty towards the end. You therefore have to use powerful agitators and you can only maintain a moderate work pace, which requires careful monitoring. After the hydrin has been added, the mass is heated to 115-160, the temperature range of 80-110 having to be run through as quickly as possible in order to avoid decomposition in hydrocyanic acid.
Since the compounds polymerize easily, the long reaction time caused by the difficult heat dissipation is also dangerous in this respect, and resinous, unusable by-products are often obtained despite the use of the known antipolymerization agents. The subsequent rearrangement in methacrylamide, which takes place at 115-160 ", proceeds relatively quickly. At 115-120, as we found, around 70" # "changes in 20 minutes, around 90% in 60 minutes ; at 160 the rearrangement only takes about 2 minutes.
We have now found that the difficulties mentioned in the combination of acetone and vanhydrin with cliiveic acid can be avoided in a very simple manner. If the sulfuric acid is diluted with methacrylamide, the acetone can be added to the sulfuric acid at higher temperatures. without the dreaded decomposition in hydrocyanic acid occurring in any appreciable amount.
While up to now one did not dare to exceed temperatures of about 80 ", according to the present process one can work at temperatures of 110-130".
One achieves the considerable advantage that at these n high temperatures - the melting link of the iif, etliaerylamids is only 10 (;
- the R. (, - al-tion mass is thin and thus the heat of reaction can easily be carried away. At the same time, a rapid working method is possible,
because at these higher temperatures the acetoney anhydride is largely rearranged to amide during mixing. If, for example, 1 mol of acetone cyanohydrin is mixed finitely 1.5 mol of sulfuric acid at 11 (1-120 "within 20 minutes.
after the complete feed, about 0.70 mol. are already converted into i @ lethaerylamide.
In this way, dangerous decomposition and undesired polymerization are largely avoided in the rapid operating mode.
The implementation is, as already indicated. In this first phase the process is not complete. the remainder of the conversion until the reaction components have fully reacted can be carried out in a known manner by further heating the reaction mass, advantageously at a higher temperature. for example 130-160.
before. where, as a result of the conversion to amide, which has already progressed far, the post-reaction proceeds smoothly and the methacrylamide content of the solution is greater than 90% of what is theoretically possible.
Thus, the present invention consists in that. that the action of sulfuric acid on acetone cyanohydrin in the presence of 1lc, triacrylamide at temperatures of 110-130, preferably 110-120. takes place and then the reaction ends at templates of 115-160, preferably about 140.1, c.
For the execution of the erfindting-s-runu -rfabrens isl. the insulation of the vials V (el I \ Tethacryhimid not necessary,
The reaction can be started with a part of a previous batch and, continuously or alternately, acionicyanohydrin and sulfuric acid can be added to this solution at hot 111-120.
The above procedure can be carried out continuously before geous enough. for example in such a way that a suitable coolable device, in which there is a liquid containing ethaeryl amide, is placed.
for example a solution of # .lethacrylamide in sulfuric acid and optionally acetone cyanohydrin. and a temperature of 110-120 "is maintained by stirring and cooling. Aeetonc @ # aiih \ -drin and sulfuric acid flow in continuously, WI ;
They allow a partial discharge of the reaction mixture at a suitable point. The mixing device only needs to be so large that there is a dwell time of about 20 minutes; it then always contains a sufficient amount of methacrylamide to dilute the incoming sulfuric acid, for example 20-2 5%.
You can do this in a simple, comparatively small stirred kettle that always remains the same. convert large amounts of acetone cyanide in continuous and easy operation. whereby the difficulties outlined at the beginning are completely avoided.
The solution running out of the mixing device is then made to react completely, for example by passing a U-tube at about 140.
The methacrylamide-containing sulfuric acid solution obtained in this way can, if appropriate, be processed directly onto methacrylic ester, for example by the known treatment with alcohols.
But you can also isolate the pure methacrylamide from the solutions. For this purpose, as has also been found, the reaction solution containing methacrylamide can advantageously be neutralized with aqueous ammonia. The very easily water-soluble amide is surprisingly almost insoluble in a concentrated ammonium sulfate solution and, after neutralization in the heat, separates out as an easily separable oil layer over the ammonium sulfate solution.
Execution example: A stirred vessel with a capacity of 100 liters, which has an overflow with a capacity of around 150 liters, contains 70 kg of a reaction solution from a previous operation. The solution contains about 60% H2804, 15% acetone cyanohydrin, 25% methacrylamide, respectively. their reaction products with sulfuric acid. The temperature is 115.
With thorough stirring, 85 kg of acetone cyanohydrin and 125 kg of 100% sulfuric acid are run in every hour; the temperature in the stirred vessel is kept at 115-120 by the water bath. Through the overflow, the reaction solution flows continuously at a speed of 210 kg / hour to a U-tube, where it is brought to react in a known manner by heating to 140-150 and is fed to its further use. - The content of the mixer constantly retains its initial composition with slight fluctuations.
The amide can be isolated from the sulfuric acid solution thus obtained as follows. 210 kg of the solution (contains 80 kg of methacrylamide in 125 kg of 100% sulfuric acid) are poured with cooling to a solution of 44 kg of ammonia in 200 kg of water. The cooling is set so that the temperature after mixing is 80-90. 2 layers form, which can be easily separated from each other. The lower layer is 346 kg and contains only 2) -3% amide, while the upper layer is 108 kg and contains about 72 kg of amide.
The small amounts of the lower layer can be recovered by extracting with a solvent. The upper layer solidifies to a crystal cake of raw methacrylamide on cooling. The amide is obtained completely pure by drying and redissolving in methyl alcohol, for example.
