Description

Process for the production of a copolymer of vinyl esters. It is known that the polymerization of vinyl esters can be influenced by copolymerization in such a way that the character of the ester polymers is greatly changed. Is known z. B. the use of vinyl crotonate as an additive.

It has now been found that particularly favorable effects are brought about by the mixed polymerization of vinyl esters of monocarboxylic acids with divinyl esters of dicarboxylic acids. It can, besides the improvements already achieved by other means, such. B.

Reduction resp. Elimination of solubility, the "gold flow", among other things, a remarkable homogenization and hardening of the polymers can be achieved.

In the presence of only a few percent of the divinyl ester and at a temperature that is not too high, easily insoluble, infusible, crystal-clear and bubble-free, as well as very hard, tough products that cannot be indented with the fingernail can be obtained with block polymerization.

Particularly beautiful and highly refractive polymers are obtained, for example, by mixed polymerisation of vinyl benzoate and divinyl esters. When heated, these products do not show any cold flow, but rather they become elastic.

The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of a mixed polymer of vinyl esters, which is characterized in that vinyl acetate is reacted in mixed polymerization with succinic acid di-vinyl ester.

\ Example: 97 parts by weight of vinyl acetate -I- 3 parts of divinyl succinate are polymerized with 2/00 benzoyl superoxide to a maximum of 50-60. It became a. bubble-free, crystal-clear and very tough product obtained. It can be used for optical purposes.
