Cover for fuses. Fuses are known to have a powder core that is enclosed by a sheath. In the past, sheaths made of threads or fibers from hemp or jute were used that were soaked or coated with various substances such as tar or gutta-percha. Such casings do not provide satisfactory protection in terms of impermeability or mechanical strength. They are also more or less flammable, where their use in mines is dangerous.
It has been proposed to gel these defects by impregnating such sheaths made of threads with certain substances based on polyvinyl chloride or by directly applying these substances in the form of a thin layer without a binder on the powder soul; to fix. The latter route, which is very advantageous from an economic point of view, requires the use of elevated temperatures, because a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and plasticizer cannot easily be spun below 135.
But that means there is a certain risk of inflammation for the powder soul, with which one does not usually work at temperatures above 110. In addition, the mechanical strength of casings based on polyvinyl chloride is not very satisfactory, in particular at low temperatures at which such casings become brittle. This brittleness occurs in particular when minerals (talc, kaolin, etc.) are added to polyvinyl chloride, which substances are usually added to make the casing cheaper.
It has now been found that the polyvinyl acetals (condensation products of polyvinyl alcohol with aldehydes) are excellently suited for the production of detonating cord covers.
The present invention therefore relates to a sheath for fuses which consists at least partially of at least one polyvinyl acetal. After the addition of suitable plasticizers, the polyvinyl acetals can be spun in suitable amounts of oil at relatively low temperatures, so that there is no risk of ignition for the powder core.
They tolerate an increased percentage of inert fillers. without losing their mechanical resistance, which is also excellent at low temperatures. They can therefore be used advantageously for the immediate covering of the powder core as well as for impregnating the covering made of threads or fibers.
The materials based on polyvinyl lacetal can also be used, for example, for spinning around a fuse that consists of a powder core and a sheath made of hemp or jute threads. They replace the coatings used up to now in an advantageous manner. In this case, it is recommended to use a thinner layer with the addition of a larger amount of plasticizer.
The polyvinyl lacetal of formaldehyde has proven particularly suitable. The following examples are intended to illustrate the invention without restricting it in any way. The parts given are parts by weight.
