Conformément à l'invention, le tube étant disposé en série avec une bobine d'inductance dans le circuit d'utilisation, il doit être satis fait simultanément aux conditions suivantes: a) l'impédance de ladite bobine est telle qu'elle serait suffisante pour stabiliser le tube à son intensité de fonctionnement, si l'ensemble formé par le tube et la bobine était monté directement aux bornes d'une dis tribution à tension constante, de même fré quence que le courant d'alimentation, la ten sion constante, dont la valeur est celle néces saire pour assurer le fonctionnement du tube dans ces conditions, étant, d'autre part, infé rieure à deux fois la tension du tube en ré gime de fonctionnement;
Device for igniting and supplying under low voltage an electric discharge tube. Assemblies are known which consist of combinations of inductance and capacitance elements and make it possible to transform an energy distribution at constant voltage into an energy distribution at constant intensity.
To define these assemblies in a general way, let us consider an assembly supplied by means of a source of alternating current at constant voltage and constituted by a capacitor in series with an inductor; or between these two elements a point from which starts a branch constituting the utilization circuit, this branch terminating, on the other hand, at a point: any one of a network of conductors to which said assembly belongs; if we assume that the current in the shunt is not zero, we know that it is constant, whatever the impedance of the circuit of use, when the considered inductance and capacitance are matched at resonance on the frequency of the. Power source.
In what follows, the expression "assembly belonging by its form to the constant voltage-constant current type" applies to assemblies corresponding to the definition above, but in which the resonance condition is not satisfied, the current in the operating circuit is not constant.
The object of the invention is the application of these assemblies to the operating power supply of low voltage electric discharge tubes provided with thermo-emissive electrodes heated by the discharge itself, by firing from a source of alternating current supplying a low voltage of constant amplitude, for example a usual low-voltage distribution source, it makes it possible to use in the user circuit only voltages not exceeding the limits authorized by the regulations for low voltage installations.
Without reducing the service life of the tube used, it can achieve a minimum bulk and give rise to a very low energy expenditure in all of the power supply units, at a high power factor at the terminals of the source and to a high operating stability with regard to both voltage variations across the source and the tube, (peak, deformations tending to occur in the form of the current flowing through the tube under the effect of periodic discharges of the capacitor during operation.
In accordance with the invention, the tube being arranged in series with an inductance coil in the circuit of use, it must be satisfied simultaneously with the following conditions: a) the impedance of said coil is such that it would be sufficient to stabilize the tube at its operating current, if the assembly formed by the tube and the coil were mounted directly to the terminals of a constant voltage distribution, of the same frequency as the supply current, the constant voltage , the value of which is that necessary to ensure operation of the tube under these conditions, being, on the other hand, less than twice the voltage of the tube in operating regime;
b) the voltage across the user circuit for zero current in this circuit is greater than the tube ignition voltage, but less than three times the voltage across the distribution source; c) the circuit terminating at the terminals of the distribution source includes an automatic current cut-off device (fuse or circuit breaker relay) set so as to come into action for zero current in the user circuit, but on the other hand, so as not to prevent the realization of ignition.
The impedance as defined above makes it possible to avoid the rapid deterioration of the electrodes either during the priming of the tube or during its operation; it has a much higher value than that which could be advantageous to use for the regular operation of a cold electrode tube. It is remarkable; to note that this impedance value is independent of the constitution of the power supply assembly and of the value of the elements thereof, although these elements intervene for the stabilization of the tube.
Stabilization with the constant voltage distribution envisaged in a) must be considered as ensured when at an: accidental variation of <B> 10% </B> in the constant voltage corresponds a variation between 30 and 18% of the current in the tube. In the case of the invention; given the presence of the elements of the power supply assembly, the stabilization obtained for the entire device will obviously be even better.
As for the voltage at the terminals of the utilization circuit for a zero current in this circuit, it is obtained by a suitable dimensioning of the elements of the assembly which, on the other hand, must have the appropriate values so that in operation the tube is traversed by a normal regime current.
This dimensioning can be determined, outside the experimental method, at least as a first approximation, by applying known mathematical formulas relating to the assembly considered, in which it is expressed that the reactances of said elements satisfy the two preceding conditions, this, also taking into account the value obtained for the reactance of the coil in series with the tube by applying rule a) above.
The low value chosen for the voltage at the terminals of the user circuit corresponding to a zero current in this circuit allows, while avoiding the production of a dangerous overvoltage at the terminals of the latter, if the tube is taken out of use, to reduce the size of the elements of the power supply assembly, this effect is further accentuated by the arrangement of the cut-off device provided, which makes it possible to size these elements only to the extent necessary to withstand the passage of a current equal to that which passes through them at the time of ignition,
while the tube is being put into operation. It has in fact been recognized that the duration of the ignition is sufficiently reduced to thus make it possible to obtain a very small footprint compared to that which would be necessary in the absence of the breaking device, if said elements had been chosen to withstand the current which would flow through them in the event of the tube being taken out of service.
The automatic current cut-off device used may be a delayed-action fuse, set to come into action after the expiration of the time required for the tube to be put into operation, if the tube has not been blown. does not take place. This fuse is, for example, constituted by an electric heating winding, which can be of a metal whose resistance increases sharply with temperature, surrounding a mass of fusible alloy, for example Lipowita alloy (26.3% lead , 13,, 3% tin, 50% bismuth, 10% cadmium, melting temperature <B> 70 '</B> C), with which it is found in, series,
the fuse terminating in a spring under tension, one of the ends of which is embedded in the fusible mass. But in many cases, as has been recognized, it suffices to use an instantaneous current automatic cut-off device, for example an ordinary fuse, this is the case when the difference between the call current at the distribution source corresponding to zero current in the user circuit and that corresponding to the priming period is made sufficient to allow the tube to be primed without actuation of the cut-off member.
However, this difference can be determined by a suitable choice of data intervening in the device (voltage at the terminals of the distribution circuit, starting voltage and characteristic of the tube); in fact, it is all the greater the greater the ratio of the starting voltage to the voltage at the terminals of the tube and the ratios of the current in the supply assembly for a zero current in the circuit. operating current, operating current, on the one hand, and priming current, on the other hand.
Preferably, the coil in series with the tube is dimensioned in such a way that the induction produced by the passage of the starting current in this coil is made sufficiently low to make it possible to avoid saturation thereof by the latter. instantaneous current peaks resulting from sudden discharges of the capacitor during ignition; this induction is, for example, chosen from the order of 6000 to 7500 gauss.
The appended figure provides, by way of non-limiting example, an embodiment of the device according to the invention; in this fi gure, <I> A, B </I> designate the terminals of the constant voltage distribution source, <I> C, D, </I> those of the user circuit, 1 and 3 are the inductors, 2 and 4 the capacities of the power supply assembly, these elements being respectively equal to one another; the bridge assembly thus produced is one of the assemblies designed for the transformation of a constant voltage distribution into a constant current distribution, 5 is the inductance coil in series with the glow discharge tube 6; 7 represents a fuse.
Inductance 5 being chosen as indicated above, the elements of the assembly are dimensioned, taking into account the stated conditions, so as to ensure a sufficient voltage for the initiation of the tube and a current intensity in operation equal to the regime intensity of the latter.
