"DISPOSITIF DE COMPOUNDAGE ET DE PROTECTION DES APPAREILS A
DECHARGE ELECTRIQUE"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
sistance 7.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"DEVICE FOR COMPOUNDING AND PROTECTING APPLIANCES
SHOCK"
The present invention carries out the control of electrical discharge devices provided with grids by bringing them to a negative potential with respect to the cathode, with a view to blocking these devices, in the event of either an internal short-circuit, or a short-circuit in the direct current network. It also makes it possible to carry out, by means of a simple assembly, the compounding of the DC voltage according to the current delivered by the device.
It is known that a short-circuit in an electric discharge device fitted with grids can be stifled quickly by bringing these grids to a negative potential with respect to the cathode, the arc then not being able to ignite on any of the anodes. , turns off naturally.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention, the potential/of the gates is controlled by a special transformer.
This transformer, schematically represented by way of example in FIG. 1 of the appended drawings, consists of a mechanical part, with three different cores, on which are arranged three separate windings.
The primary winding of this transformer carries the primary current of the supply transformer of the electric shock device; this winding can be reduced to a bar surrounded by the magnetic circuit, as shown at I in said FIG. 1. A second winding II, acting as a secondary, is placed entirely on one of the end cores. The middle core carries no winding, while the third winding III is placed entirely on the last core of the transformer.
The section of the core carrying the secondary winding II is determined so that, for the normal values of the primary current, the iron is not saturated; a small air gap can be provided for this purpose. The middle core has a section of the same order of magnitude as the previous one and has a larger air gap. The section of the third core is notably smaller than that of the first two.
FIG. 2 shows another embodiment of the special tramformer controlling the potential of the gates, in accordance with the invention.
According to this variant, the transformer has four cores and three separate windings.
Winding I, constituting the primary winding, can also be reduced to a bar surrounded by the magnetic circuit. Winding II is split and placed on the two end cores, while winding III is split and placed on the two middle cores. The section of the extreme cores is determined so that, as long as the primary current does not exceed a certain value, fixed in advance, the iron is not
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
not saturated; on the contrary, the section of the middle nuclei is only a fraction of the section of the extreme nuclei so as to rapidly reach iron saturation there.
It follows from these arrangements that, for increasing values of the primary current, the voltage across the terminals of winding III will first increase linearly to rapidly assume the saturation value. On the contrary, the voltage at the terminals of winding II will vary linearly according to the primary current and will not reach its saturation value until much later.
Figure 3 shows, as a function of the primary current, the variation laws of the voltages taken from the terminals of windings II and III. Vn represents the voltage of winding II and Vp that of winding III. If the two windings II and III are mounted in opposition, the resulting voltage varies according to the primary current following the curve V: it is first positive, then 7n increasing more rapidly than Vp, it goes through zero to then increase in negative value.
FIG. 4 gives an embodiment of the invention.
The electric discharge device 1, powered by the transformer 2, comprises six anodes 3 provided with grids 4.
In order to facilitate understanding of the invention and to simplify the figure, only the control circuit of one of the gates has been shown in bold lines. This arrangement is therefore found as many times as there are grids 4.
The windings represented at 5, in figure 4, constitute the secondaries of three special transformers similar to those described above with regard to figures 1 and 2.
The primaries I of these, not shown in the figure, and the primary of the main transformer 2 are placed in series. The secondary windings II and III of the three special transformers are star-connected respectively.
Windings II supply three current rectifiers 6 which deliver on an equalization choke 8 and a re-
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
resistance 7. There is thus born across the terminals of the latter a potential difference which was previously called Vn. The positive terminal of resistor 7 is connected directly to the cathode of electric discharge device 1, while the negative terminal is connected, via a choke 10, to the common point of windings 5. choke 10 and capacitor 9, shunting resistor 7, are intended to increase the time constant of the circuit defined above, in order to ensure, in the event of a short-circuit, sufficient persistence of the negative polarization giving the main circuit breaker time to trip.
Windings III of group 5 supply six current rectifiers 11 which deliver on resistors 12. Each of these is placed in series in the control circuit of one of the grids 4. At the terminals of each resistor 12 appears, during the flow period of the corresponding rectifier ii, a potential difference, previously called Vp. The negative terminal of this resistor 12 is connected to the negative terminal of resistor 7, while the positive terminal of resistor 12 is connected to gate 4 via a resistor 13.
The secondary of a transformer 15 supplies a current rectifier 14 creating at the terminals of the resistor 13 placed in the gate circuit considered, a potential difference Vr.
Each of the gates 4 therefore receives a potential resulting from the superposition of a negative DC voltage Vn created in the resistor 7, of an interrupted positive unidirectional voltage Vp taken from the terminals of the resistor 12 and of a negative half-wave Vr taken across resistor 13.
The potential of the grid 4 with respect to the cathode, thus determined, is represented by the curves of figure 5.
The voltages Vn, Vp, Vr generated at the terminals of the resistors 7, 12 and 13 have magnitudes such that, for the normal current, the voltage at the terminals of the discharge device is that required. The potential applied to the gate considered is '@ then represented by the curve 1' which intersects the potential of
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
cathode, assumed to coincide with the ignition characteristic, at point a. When the current of the electric discharge device increases, the negative voltage Vn and the positive voltage Vp also increase, although unequally. The bias voltage of gate 4 is, in this case, represented by curve 2'. As seen in Figure 5, the ignition of the anode occurs at b and is therefore advanced.
In other words, the average value of the rectified voltage is increased.
If the current increases in a dangerous way, for example under the action of a short circuit in the network, the voltage Vn increases much more than Vp, as shown in figure 3, and the potential applied to grid 4 becomes that represented by curve 3'. All the gates 4 are then biased negative; tively with respect to the cathode, blocking the electric shock apparatus 1.
It is understood that the devices described above are given for information only and are not limiting and that, consequently, any variants made to these devices do not depart from the scope of the present invention. .
