Welding rod, mainly but not exclusively electrode for electric welding. The present invention relates to a welding rod, mainly but not exclusively to an electrode for hard welding with an electric arc, comprising addition materials housed between certain metal elements extending parallel to the axis. of the wand.
Welding rods of this type are known which consist of wires obtained by rolling and drawing and joined together in a to ron, the intervals between these wires being filled with additive materials.
These rods have the drawback of being expensive to produce because the elementary threads which constitute them had to be manufactured by rolling and drawing and are all the more expensive as their cross section is smaller. In addition, these wires contain numerous small pockets of gas, which, when the end of the rod is heated, explode and, therefore, violently project the metal which surrounds them. Finally, the addition materials are in contact with each other. Consequently, they can be altered during the storage of the bars.
Welding rods of the aforementioned type are also known, formed by the ag glomeration of long metal fibers of small cross section extending approximately parallel to the axis of the rod, additive materials being housed between these fibers.
These rods do not have the drawback of having numerous pockets of gas in the fibers which constitute them, but their electrical conductivity, although very satisfactory, is not as perfect as that of a rod made of conducting elements extending seamlessly from one end of the rod to the other. In addition, the adducts lodged between the fibers can react with each other during storage of the rods.
The present invention relates to a welding rod which does not have these drawbacks.
A this effect, in the rod according to the invention, the aforesaid additive materials are housed in channels isolated from each other and formed by the faces of the folds of a thin pleated metal tape .
Preferably, these channels are further isolated from the outside. This isolation can be achieved by a sealed sheath advantageously containing materials which contribute to obtaining a good filler metal. It can also be achieved by welding the faces of the plies to each other at the periphery.
The use of a thin ribbon has the advantage of considerably reducing the thickness of the walls of the gas pockets that it can contain.
As a result, these pockets can be operated under less pressure and they bind only to a small splash of metal. The use of thin threads of a diameter close to that of the thickness of the tape used according to the invention would be practically impossible, because of the very high cost of manufacturing these threads. In addition, the rods formed by such wires would be too flexible to be able to be used normally in welding operations.
According to an advantageous variant embodiment, the additives are kept dry by clamping between the faces of the folds of the tape.
The ribbon of the welding rod according to the invention is preferably Him militia ribbon which has. was obtained by cutting processes, using tools, metal parts of relatively large thickness compared to the thickness of the tape to be obtained. In this case, the division a. as an effect of opening a large number of small pockets that may exist in the room from which the ribbon originates.
The object of the invention is also the method of manufacturing a rod of hard solder and mainly but not exclusively an electrode for electric arc welding.
In the process according to the invention, a metal tape is folded longitudinally, additive materials are introduced between the faces of the folds formed and these faces are brought together in order to clamp the additive materials together.
In order to ensure the precise dosage of the additives. the plies can be calibrated before y introducing additive materials in the form of powder or other small elements, and the height of the additive layer can be adjusted between the faces of the folds before bringing them together., in order to clamp the additives together.
The drawing appended to this specification shows schematically, and by way of example only, two installations for the manufacture of a welding rod according to the invention as well as the variation of the transverse line of this rod in the different phases of the process according to the invention.

Fig. 8 is a plan view of the installation of, FIG. 7.
The fi. 9 is a schematic representation. # 1 tique of the variation of the cross section of a welding rod in the different phases of the process implemented in the installation of fig. 7 and 8.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
The installation shown in fig. 1 to 4 comprises a cylindrical metal part 2 rotating in the direction of the arrow X with regard to a tool 3 which advances radially in the direction of the arrow Y towards the axis of the part 2 as and when a thin ru ban 4 is unrolled from it.
This thin metal tape is hot-rolled between the rolling mill rolls 5, in order to give it back the elasticity which it may have lacked during its cutting. The heating of the tape before it is rolled is carried out by the Joule effect, thanks to the fact that the tape passes after its cutting between wheels 6 joined by rubbers 7 to one of the terminals 8 of a current source, the other terminal 9 of which is joined by rubbers 10 to the rolling rollers 5. Between the knurls 6 and the rollers 5, the tape passes through a heat-insulating sheath 11 intended to prevent it from cooling.
On leaving the laminating rolls 5, the tape is pleated longitudinally. For this purpose, it passes successively between pairs of wheels designated respectively by 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. These wheels are provided with grooves of generally triangular shape. The faces of the splines of the different pairs all have the same width, but the angle that these faces make between them varies from one pair of rolls to the next.
As can easily be seen in FIG. 2, the triangular grooves are all the narrower as the wheel to which they belong is further from the place where the pleating of the ru ban begins. The depth of the grooves obviously varies in the opposite direction to the width of the latter since the two faces of the grooves have the same width for all the carpet. Thanks to this particular way of pleating the ribbon, the pleating is carried out at a constant ply width and one avoids transversely stretching the metal, which prevents it from tearing during pleating, even when the latter is performed cold. By carrying out the pleating in this way, it is even possible with certain tapes to avoid laminating the tape after it has been cut.
After leaving the last pair of rollers 16, the pleated tape passes through a die 17 (fig. 1 to 3) comprising two parts 17a and 17b between which the pleating is calibrated. On leaving this die, the pleated tape enters an enclosure 18, the ceiling 19 of which (FIG. 1) has been assumed to have been removed in FIG. 2, and whose side face 20 (FIG. 2) has been assumed to be removed in FIG. 1.
The various operations which are carried out in this enclosure are protected from air and humidity. One can, for example, for this purpose, introduce dry nitrogen through an opening 21 located at one end of this chamber, this nitrogen escaping through an opening 22 located at the opposite end.
In the enclosure 18 is disposed a receptacle 23 containing, for example, powdered ferro-chromium. This receptacle is crossed by the pleated ribbon. The ferro-chromium powder is introduced between the faces of the plies and the quantity of powder contained in each ply is precisely regulated by the height of the layer in each ply. This height is determined by the position of a comb 24, the teeth of which penetrate between the faces of the folds and whose height position is adjustable. This comb is, for this purpose, provided with a rack 25 in engagement with a pinion 26 which can be rotated by acting from outside the enclosure 18 on a crank 27.
In order to facilitate the descent of the additive materials into the container 23, provision has been made to stir this material in the container by subjecting the latter to vibrations created by an electromagnet 37 (fig. 2 and 4) supplied with power. by a source of alternating current at industrial frequency 3'8. The container 23 is also subjected to the action of a return spring 39.
The descent of the additive material into the container 23 is also facilitated by the downwardly flared shape of the part of this container above the pleated plane.
In the channels formed by the faces of the pleats at the bottom of the pleated tape, addition materials can also be introduced. These can be pushed back in any way between the faces of the plies, for example by means of knurls.
In fi * 1 and?, There is shown a mo lette 28 (fig. 1) pushing back between two of the faces of the folds at the lower part of the tape, a nickel wire 29 coming from a deflector 30.
After the various addition materials have been introduced between the faces of the said tape plies, these faces are tightened by passing the tape between two rollers 31 whose axis is perpendicular to the plane of the non-pleated tape. The passage of the tape between the rolls 31 has the effect of energetically clamping the additives between these faces.
In the case where the powder is only introduced into the channels formed by the faces of the folds at the upper part of the pleated ru ban, the pleating is advantageously carried out, so that the plane passing through the free edges of the faces outer folds do not meet any of the other sides of the folds. As shown schematically at the fi. 5, a pleated tape is thus formed, the free edges 40 and 41 of which of the outer faces of which are located above the others. faces of the folds. After introduction of the various additive materials, these edges are brought close to each other, as indicated in fig. 6, so as to prevent the powder from escaping from between the faces of the folds.
The tape thus treated is then passed between the rollers 31, which has the effect, as indicated above, of tightening the faces of the folds.
The mass obtained at the outlet of the rollers 31 is hot rolled between laminating rolls 32, the profile of which corresponds to that of the desired electrode. The axis of these rollers is perpendicular to the plane of the surfaces in contact. The heating of the mass to be hot-rolled is carried out, for example, electrically by the Joule effect between the rollers 31 and the rolling rolls 32. The rollers 31 are connected by wipers 33 to one of the terminals 34 of a current source whose the other terminal 35 is, connected by rubbers 36 to the laminator rolls 32.
By their passage to. hot between the laminator rolls 32, the outer portions of the ply faces are welded to each other and isolate the additive from the outside. These adducts are properly held in place although at no time have they been found in paste form. Their incorporation into the electrode can be carried out completely dry. The electrode thus obtained can leave the enclosure 18 through the opening 21 without the additive materials being able to react with each other or with the outside. Hygroscopic materials or oxidizable substances can therefore be employed as additives.
The electrode obtained in this way exhibits an excellent distribution of adducts throughout the mass. It contains very little occluded gas and therefore gives rise to less spatter during welding than solid electrodes. The good distribution of the adducts throughout the mass makes it possible to obtain alloys with a high content of various metals.
Further, the precise metering of additive materials can be easily achieved by calibrating the plies of the tape and adjusting the height of these materials between the faces of the plies.
It is even possible to easily make an electrode, the amount of additive material for which varies from one cross section to another. It is enough for that. to vary the height of the comb 24 during the advancement of the pleated ru ban in the container 23. An electrode of this type is of interest when it is desired, for example, to cover a metal part having a certain composition, of a metal or alloy layer having a different composition.
In this case, it may be advantageous to start the deposition of this layer by means of an electrode whose composition is close to that of the part to be covered and to continue the deposition by means of a metal whose composition is similar more and more of that which one wishes to obtain at the periphery of the cover layer.
It is also possible to make a weld rod conforming to the intention by pleating the tape in a manner other than that indicated above. Thus, in the installation shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, and which comprises certain parts identical to corresponding parts of the installation of FIGS. 1 to 4, the ru ban 4, at its exit from the rolling rollers 5, is folded longitudinally, so that its cross section, after having passed through the shape shown at b in FIG. 9, affects the shape of a U as shown in c.
For this purpose, it passes successively between rollers 42 and 52. The upper rolls have projections 48 and 53 of trapezoidal and rectangular shape, respectively, while grooves 44 and 54 of corresponding shapes are made in the lower rolls.
The tape then enters the enclosure 18, the ceiling 19 of which (FIG. 7) was supposed to have been removed in FIG. S, and the side face 20 (fig. 8) of which was supposed to have been removed in fig. 7.
In the enclosure 18 is disposed a receptacle 23 containing powder and identical to that of FIGS. 1, 2 and 4. The powder fills the bottom of the channel formed by the U-shaped ribbon and the height of the powder layer 45 (fig. 9) is determined by the position of a slat 46 whose position is adjustable like that of comb 24.
The tape then passes between rollers 47. The lower roll is smooth and a groove 48 of trapezoidal section is formed in the upper roll. The cross section of the strip then takes the shape indicated at e in FIG. 9, then that shown at f, at the exit of the smooth rollers 49. A nickel wire 2.9 coming from the unwinder 30 is then brought against the tape which is rolled in the form of an angle (see g, fig. 9) by grooved rollers. 50 and 51 which drive the wire 29 into the bottom of the angle of the angle. The two wings of the angle iron are then brought into contact with one another by passing the tape between the rollers 31 with a vertical axis.
The manufacture of the electrode is then completed in the same way as in the installation of FIGS. 1 to 4.
In order to insulate from the outside the adducts which are between the faces of the plies, these faces need not necessarily be welded at the periphery. It is possible, for example, to cover the electrode obtained by the dry clamping of the additive materials in the folds, with a sealed sheath constituted by a varnish. This prevents oxidation of the electrode. It is also possible, when an iron ribbon is used, to anneal it so as to pass it through the bluing zone. In this way, as oxidation is no longer possible, the varnish becomes superfluous. It is also possible to use a sealed sheath containing materials which contribute to obtaining a good filler metal.
Among these materials, mention may be made not only of those which are involved in the composition of the weld metal deposited but also those which, in the case of an electrode for arc welding, serve to direct the arc. The sealed sheath in question may also contain materials which are electrical insulators and which prevent the formation of short circuits when the electrode comes into contact with the workpiece at a point other than its end where: the arc should shoot out.
The powder material added to the ru ban does not have to be metallic. It is possible, moreover, instead of powder, to add materials in the form of fibers, shavings, etc. Instead of an electromagnet supplied with alternating current to vibrate the receptacle 23, one could obviously use other means. The adducts contained in vessel 23 could also be agitated other than by vibrating the latter. A stirrer could in particular be placed within the mass of the additive materials in the receptacle 23.
