Process for the preparation of an azo dye. Valuable water-soluble Konoazo dyes with excellent drawability on acetate silk are, as has been found, obtained in very good yield if diazo compounds which contain at least one nitro group, no carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid group, but possibly also other substituents,
with the sulphated 3-arylamino-l-butanols of the general formula according to known work

couples, in which X can be hydrogen or alkyl and which must not have any substituents in the 4-position of the benzene ring. Instead of introducing the sulfato group into the coupling component, the finished sulfato-free monoazo dye can also be sulfated afterwards.
The coupling components which are free of sulfate groups can be obtained by condensation of 3-halobutanol with primary bezw. secondary amines of the benzene series obtained according to the known method of preparation of oxethylated bases with the aid of halohydrins.
With the new dyes, acetate silk can be dyed and printed in strong, rich shades with good fastness properties. They can also be used for animal materials such as natural silk and leather. The dyes known from British Patent 237739 with Alkylsulfatoäthylanilinen as coupling components they are particularly superior due to their light, sulfur and acid fastness.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of an azo dye, which is characterized in that 4-nitro-2-chloro-1-aminobenzene is diazotized and treated with the acidic sulfuric acid ester of 3 - (N-ethylphenylamino - ) butanols - (1) couples.
Example: A diazole solution prepared in the usual way from 17.3 parts of 4-nitro-2-chloro-1-amino-benzene is allowed to stir in an ice-cold solution of \ 2.7 .:
3 parts of the sulfuric acid ester of 3- (N- Ätliyl-plienylainino-) butanols- (1) (obtained by condensation of 3-clilorbutanol with monoäthy1- aniline, Kps = 140-145 ", and conversion of the base thus obtained due to the subsequent action of chlorosulfonic acid in the sulfatoester)
run in and add a more than sufficient amount of Na acetate to complete the coupling. After the coupling is complete, the mixture is heated to 70-80 ", the dye goes into solution, and salted out with sodium chloride. The dye obtained is a red powder when dry, which dissolves in water with a ruby red color.
It has an excellent affinity for acetate silk and dyes it in blue-red tones that correspond to those with the dye, which contains ethyl stilfatoätliylaiii-lin as a coupling component (according to EP 237739), in light, sulfur - and are superior to authenticity. The dye is also used to dye animal fabrics such as wool, leather, natural silk and the like. useful.
