Spark plug. On the previously known spark plugs, the device for generating the igniting sparks is made so that they can jump from a central electrode to one or more lateral ones, which in turn are attached to the edge of the mass of the spark plug and are directed against the central electrode. The latter usually consists of a simple pin with a maximum diameter of two millimeters, the side electrodes only made of wire with a smaller thickness. The arrangement is then made in such a way that one or more small spark gaps are formed between these two types of electrodes.
In practice, there is sometimes the disadvantage that in this small spark gap area, which is limited to only a small zone in the vicinity of the candle axis, a build-up of oil, soot or coal forms, which is at least an unsafe function or even a complete failure of the Spark plug. In addition, when the engine is under high stress, especially when the number of revolutions is high, the named side electrode tends to glow and thus causes the inflowing gas to ignite prematurely.
Furthermore, the spark plugs of the previous type have a cavity between the mass body and the insulator located in its center, which encloses the pin-shaped shaft of the center electrode. In this there is also very often a coating of soot or coal, because here the replacement of the; explosive gas mixtures cannot occur quickly enough, and therefore the complete combustion of the same in this cavity is prevented.
The mentioned coating of soot or carbon in the mentioned cavity sintered as a result of the high temperatures during the rapidly successive explosions and becomes conductive for the high-voltage ignition current, so that a short circuit occurs and the spark plug fails.
The spark plug of the present invention eliminates these shortcomings. First of all, it lacks electrical electrodes protruding from the lower edge of the body, which acts as a ground electrode.
Above all, the center electrode is not, as previously known and described at the outset, just a simple pin whose lower end directed into the cylinder chamber acts as an active center electrode, but the insulator penetrating pin forming the shaft of the center electrode serves only as a Carrier for the specially designed actual active part of the center electrode located at its lower end.
According to the present invention, the outermost points of the inner end part of the center electrode acting as the active electrode part, lying in a plane perpendicular to the candle axis, lie on a circle whose center is on the candle axis and whose diameter is at least five times the diameter of the electrode shaft is, the length of the spark gap area extending on the circle mentioned is at least 30 percent of the length of the circular line.
This active part can be implemented in various forms, but always with the aim of obtaining a coarser area for the spark gaps. A simple disk can be used for this. The edge of this disk, which acts as an active part of the third electrode, can be toothed or run on the sides of a polygon. This active part can also be formed in a star shape instead of a disk shape or composed of individual segments.
The principle of all these embodiments is always to achieve a spark gap area that is larger than that of the known spark plugs between the active part of the center electrode and the hollow body - unless this is provided with gaps or openings.
Another new feature of the present spark plug is that the lower edge of the Alasse body is not, as before, simply smooth, but with recesses, e.g. B. in the form of fully any shaped incisions or lateral openings is provided. The purpose of these is to prevent deposits full of soot or carbon from forming in the cavity between the insulator and the liner body, and to ensure that the exchange and combustion of the explosive gases in this cavity take place completely.
The accompanying drawing shows four exemplary embodiments of the new spark plug.
In all figures 1 to 8, J1 is the mass body, E is the shaft of the central electrode, 1 is the insulator, S is the active part of the central electrode, R is the edge of the mass body and H is the cavity between the insulator and the mass body.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 1 and? the edge R is provided with gaps L. The active part of the center electrode, which is disk-shaped here, is toothed by means of recesses on its edge. The parts of the mass body edge that have remained between the gaps are used here as "side electrodes".
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 3 and 4, the edge R of the mass body M is provided with circular openings, and the disk-shaped active part of the center electrode here is also perforated by openings. Opposite this center electrode, the edge R of the mass body .1l also plays the role of the side electrode in this embodiment.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 5 and G, the edge R of the mass body @ll is provided with square openings and the active part of the center electrode is formed star-shaped. The edge R of the mass body M also functions as a side electrode.
7 and 8, the edge R of the mass body is smooth on the outside, but provided with notches on the inside, but the active part of the center electrode is composed of individual segments to form a star-shaped body, and the edge R of the mass body 111 also serves here as a side electrode.
