Boiler for central heating. The present invention relates to a boiler for central heating, the hearth of which comprises an inclined grate supplied with fuel by a piston driven in a reciprocating motion, the grate placed under a loading hopper.
There are already many types of boilers of this kind, some of which at the same time provide automatic cleaning. The fuel burned in these boilers is small in size, but must be of adequate quality, especially given the work of friction or sliding of the fuel on the inclined grate.
As a result, not all fuels can be used in boilers of this kind, either because they form agglutinating masses, or because their combustion is difficult and gives many unburned fuels, or because they release many distillation gases which escape without having been able to give up their calories. The boiler which is the subject of the invention overcomes this drawback, since it is designed so as to achieve, for any fuel, a complete and perfect combustion thereof, while allowing the use of the fuel. maximum calories released.
For this purpose, the boiler forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that it has, at the vault of the fireplace, a deflector which extends over the path, of the gases, up to 'near the foot of the fuel bank resting on the grid.
This deflector has the effect not only of presenting a reverberation surface which increases the temperature prevailing above the layer of fuel, but also of lowering the flames towards the foot of the fuel bank, in order to burn the last traces of carbon which may be found in the ashes at this location. In addition, as the distillation takes place mainly at the top of the grate, the gases have a tendency to cool directly against the top of the burner and then go directly into the smoke tubes.
This deflector, placed on the gas path, interrupts the direct evacuation path, promotes the in-time mixing of the gases with the secondary air, which allows the distillation gases to burn completely in the high atmosphere. temperature and release their calories before they go to the boiler elements.
Further, in a preferred embodiment of the boiler, in order to ensure a more uniform combustion of the fuel placed on the inclined grate, the latter is constructed in such a way that the intervals between the bars have a continuously increasing width. ment towards the end of the grid where the layer of fuel resting on said grid has its maximum thickness.
Thus the air flow will be maximum where the layer of fuel is thickest and vice versa.
In view of the high temperature prevailing above the fuel resting on the inclined grate, special precautions must be taken to avoid the risk of fire being transmitted to the hopper.
To this end, in a particular embodiment, in order to prevent any circulation of air through the coal leaving the hopper, the latter discharges the fuel through a series of openings forming fuel cones leaving between them free spaces through which air passes entering through the hopper. This cooling air. East. directed above the fuel bank where it completes the secondary air supply for the combustion of the distillation gases and. of C0.
A passage can be provided for this purpose along a flap for adjusting the fuel flow, located at the head of the grid. This shutter can advantageously be constituted by two integral lamellae, spaced apart from one another, the lamella in contact with the fuel protruding downwards from the other lamella which thus is never in contact. with fuel.
Given the high temperature of the burnt gases which, before reaching the chimney, must give up their numerous calories to the elements of the boiler enclosed in a relatively small volume, these elements may comprise a series of tubes for the passage of the gases, grouped together for example so that these gases travel through part of these tubes in one direction,
and the other in reverse.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the boiler forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a section of said embodiment, consisting of a sectional boiler with smoke tubes and inclined grate.
Fig. 2) shows in section, on a large scale, the arrangement of the members arranged under the hopper, at the head of the inclined grid.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the axis of the openings provided at the bottom of the feed hopper.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the inclined grate of this boiler.
In these figures, 1 designates the combustion chamber of the boiler, in which is placed an inclined grate 2 with water cooling, at the head of which is a piston 3 animated by a slow reciprocating movement. by means of a lever 4 pivoting about an axis 5 by the intermediary of a rod 6 and a de-multiplication system shown schematically at 7 and connected to a motor 8.
The piston 3 is surmounted by a hopper 9 in which the fuel is stored. A plate 10, placed simply on an edge 11 and resting by its lower end on the upper surface of the piston 3, brings the fuel to this piston 3, while an adjustable shutter 12, which can be fixed at heights variable, adjusts the thickness of the fuel on the grate.
A deflector 13 is fixed to the vault 14 of the chamber 1 and extends, over the path of the gases, to near the foot 15 of the fuel tank. This deflector, made of ref ractaim material, practically divides the chamber 1 into two parts. Its main effect is to strongly increase, by reverberation, the temperature in the part of this chamber located above the grid 2.
The increase in this temperature constituting a danger of ignition to the fuel reserve in the hopper 9, by the air leaks which can penetrate at the base of the latter by passing between the edge 11 and the plate 10, or through the hopper itself, special means are provided to prevent this air from entering the hopper. For this purpose, the base of the hopper is provided with a number of openings 16 for the passage of fuel, which forms under this hopper a series of collapse cones 17 separated from each other by empty spaces 18.
The air streams coming from the lack of sealing of certain components can thus move towards the combustion chamber 1, passing through these spaces 18: To facilitate their flow along the adjustable shutter 12, the latter is constituted by a strip 1.2 constituting the shutter itself, and by a second strip 19 fixed like the first on a rod 20, but separated from this strip by a space 21 forming a conduit for the flow of air leaks. The strip 12 protrudes towards. the bottom strip 19, so that the latter never comes into contact with the fuel.
The space 21 is thus always free and emerges immediately above the fuel bank resting on the grid 9- At this point, the air leaks mix with secondary air which enters chamber 1 through an opening 22.
To allow any communication between the hopper and the chamber I to be interrupted at will., Under the bottom of the hopper 9, a sliding shutter 29 is provided with holes 29 ', the axes of which are separated from each other by a distance equal to that which separates the axes of the openings 16.
This shutter 29 will preferably be in the form shown in the drawing (it is not shown in FIG. 1 for clarity). To close the openings 16, it suffices to slide the shutter 29 into a position such that its solid parts included between the openings 29 'come to be placed under the openings 16.
On the other hand, to recover all the calories released in chamber 1, smoke tubes 23 allow an upward path of the gases which, arriving at the upper part 24 of the boiler, circulate in other tubes. descendants 25 before escaping to a collector 26 of the fumes. The smoke tubes are thus united in two distinct groups - in which the gases circulate in the opposite direction.
The presence of the deflector 13 in the chamber 1 greatly promotes the distribution of the gases in the first group 23 of the smoke tubes. It also allows a good mixing of the distillation or incompletely burnt gases with the secondary air which enters the upper part of the chamber, at the head of the grid, through the opening 22 and the duct 21.
Finally, in order to make the combustion uniform over the entire extent of the inclined grate 2, provision is still made to construct the latter in such a way that the intervals between the bars have a width which increases continuously as one approaches the grid. top of the grate, where the fuel layer has its greatest thickness.
As shown in fig. 4, the grid comprises hollow fixed bars 27 connected to two water collectors 30, 30 ', so as to allow cooling of these bars. These are constructed in such a way that the faces of two successive bars, facing each other, are parallel. Between the bars 57 are placed removable solid bars 28 whose axes are parallel to the axes of the first bars and whose longitudinal faces turned towards the faces of the other bars are continuously converging towards one end of the grid.
As a result, the gap between the fixed bars 27 and the removable bars 28 increases progressively towards this end. It is therefore sufficient to mount the grid in the boiler as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, so that the gap between the consecutive bars of the grille, and consequently the passage section offered to the primary air, is. the largest at the top of the grate, where, according to the inclination of the latter, the layer of fuel has its maximum thickness.
The boiler described and shown operates as follows: The fuel contained in the hopper 9 is poured, passing through the holes 16, on the plate 10 which brings it in front of the piston 3. With each forward thrust, the piston 3 track on the grid a certain quantity of fuel. This fuel is. ignited by a wood fire, first lit on the grill. The fresh charcoal brought in by each push of the piston is ignited in contact with the incandescent fuel already on the grate as soon as it reaches the part of the grate from which the primary air intake is made.
The fuel supply speed is proportional to the intensity of the blowing and the thickness of the fuel, so that when the fuel arrives at the foot of the grate, it is normally burnt. The inclination given to the grate may be such that each forward thrust of the piston moves the entire mass of the fuel on the grate, so that the ash which is at the bottom of the grate is evacuated as it goes through. the ashtray.
The presence of the deflector 13 which directs the flames towards the foot of the grate ensures that the few carbon grains, which could have escaped with the ashes, will be completely burned and that only ash will fall. In the ashtray.
Part of the secondary air is sucked in through the duct 21. This air, which comes from the leaks, passes between the cones 17 of the fuel flowing through the holes 16, then between the blades 12 and 19. This quantity of However, the air being insufficient, the remainder of secondary air is supplied through the orifice 22, the flow rate of which can be adjusted by any appropriate means. The flames and the combustion gases are sent by the primary air, passing through the fuel, to the vault of the fireplace, where they mix with this air to condare, but the deflector 13 returns them to the bottom of the combustion chamber. combustion, at the foot of the grate.
In this way, the flames and the combustion gases turn round in the combustion chamber and, as a result of the reverberation due to this deflector, in this part of the chamber 1 give off a very high temperature which further favors the combustion of the gases. out of fuel. The burnt gases are then sucked up, thanks to the natural draft, by the ascending tubes 23 at the exit of which they go towards the descending tubes 2.5, then from there to the smoke collector 26 from which they escape directly to the fireplace.
Inspection doors, not shown in the drawing, are located at the top of the chamber and allow easy cleaning of tubes 23 and 25.
The ashes stored in the ashtray are evacuated at very long intervals, by the extraction of this ashtray.
It is easy to see the important role played by the deflector 13 in cooperation with the particular device for channeling air leaks used as secondary air, and the special arrangement of the smoke tubes in two groups extending the length by course. gases to make it possible to recover, in a relatively small space, the numerous calories which they carry in leaving the combustion chamber.
The deflector not only increases the temperature in the first part of the combustion chamber by reverberation, but it forces the gases to mix intimately with the secondary air, which allows the use of fuels with a high carbon content. volatile matter generally giving a large quantity of distillation gas.
These are burnt completely above the grate before escaping to the smoke tubes. In addition, the deflector deflects the high temperature flames towards the foot of the grate, which burns the last traces of fuel that may still be in the ashes at this location.
Finally, it distributes the flames favorably in the second part of the combustion chamber by directing them towards the axis of the ascending tube bundle 23.
Thanks to this set of combined characteristics, the boiler thus constructed is capable of burning any kind of fuels, including lignites which burn with difficulty giving off many volatile gases. Even in this case, the operation of the described boiler takes place automatically and regularly, without manual intervention.
