Process for the preparation of a water-soluble condensation product. It is known that hydrogylgruppenhalge aromatic compounds by treatment with formaldehyde sulfite in water-soluble BEZW. more easily soluble compounds lead over. This reaction has also found use in the manufacture of tannins.
It is known to convert condensation products of phenols and formaldehyde into water-soluble derivatives after this reaction, and diogydiarylsulfones can also be converted into new compounds by heating with formaldehyde sulfite under pressure, which are water-soluble and have tanning properties.
Attempts to transfer this reac tion to the condensation products of Dio $ ydiarylsulfonen and formaldehyde BEZW. Formaldehyde and aromatic ogysulphonic acids showed that generally no water-soluble products were obtained.
This was also to be expected, since it could be concluded from the behavior of the starting material, the diogydiphenyl sulfone, which only reacts with the use of stronger reaction conditions such as pressure and higher temperature, that the condensation products of diogydiphenyl sulfones with formaldehyde - E- 'sulfites would not convert at all.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that certain condensation products prepared under certain conditions from diogydiarylsulfones and formaldehyde or. Formaldehyde and aromatic ogysulfonic acids,
react with formaldehyde -f- sulfites much more easily than the starting materials - diogydiphenylsulfones - themselves. The condensation conditions are on the one hand dependent on the sulfone used, respectively. of their mixtures, which condense more easily or more difficultly depending on their composition and, on the other hand, of the reaction conditions, in particular the alkalinity and the amount of formaldehyde used,
also on the concentration of the batch and the temperature.
In order to achieve a reaction product suitable for the subsequent reaction with formaldehyde sulfite, it is important to maintain a weakly alkaline reaction in the condensation of oxydiphenyl sulfone with formaldehyde, respectively. Formaldehyde + aromatic oxysulfonic acids,
The upper limit of the alkalinity is approximately when the phenolphthalein-alkaline reaction becomes clear and is most advantageously within such limits that about 1-1.1 mol. NaOH are applied to 2 mol. sulfone.
The amount of aldehyde also influences the course of the condensation; If smaller amounts are used for the precondensation, for example 1 / g mol. to 2 mol. of sulfone, the condensation requires considerably longer heating until it ends than when larger amounts of formaldehyde are used, for example 1,
25 mol. To 2 mol. Sulfone. In the latter case, however, the risk of harmful overcondensation is significantly greater. In addition to the alkalinity and the amount of aldehyde, the condensation time also depends on the concentration of the batch and the temperature.
It is advantageous to work only with the addition of as little water as possible and at the boiling point of the mixture (about 103 to 104 ° C.), which means that practically the optimal conditions are met.
As a result of these numerous decisive factors for the course of the condensation reaction, it is evident that the technically possible conditions cannot be limited by simple information.
In practice, however, it is very easy to determine the appropriate conditions for each dioxydiaryl sulfone BEZW. for their mixtures by determining through preliminary tests whether condensation products are obtained which can then be converted into water-soluble end products with formaldehyde sulfite or not. Using the information above, it is easy to find the best procedural conditions for each case.
Usually about 1 mole of sulfite and formaldehyde per mole of the sulfone originally applied is used for the second condensation, but soluble products can be achieved with smaller amounts.
It is often of advantage to use a mixture of bisulphite and neutral sulphite, which is combined in such a way that no separation takes place when it is added to the condensation mixture. Bisulfite alone is too strongly acidic, neutral sulfite is generally too sparingly soluble in the concentrated batch.
The new products are to be used as aids in the tannery or textile industry.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of a water-soluble condensation product, according to which p-Diogyydiphenylsulfon alkaline precondensed with formaldehyde and then condensed with a mixture of neutral and acidic sulfite and formaldehyde until the resin, which precipitates on acidification, in Water is clearly soluble,
whereupon the condensate is treated with dilute mineral acid and the precipitated resin is separated.
The new compound is a light-colored powder that is very soluble in water and, in an acidic solution, transforms nakedness into a white, well-filled leather of very good lightfastness.
Example: 100 parts of p-diocydiphenyl sulfone. 25 parts of sodium hydroxide solution 30% and 15 parts of water are heated for 5 hours at 100 ° C. with 16 parts of 30% formaldehyde. After adding 2.6 parts of anhydrous sodium sulfite and a solution of 35 parts of sodium bisulfite (25% SO,) and 38 parts of formaldehyde 30, the mixture is heated to 100 ° C for a long time (approx. 5 hours), until the resin that precipitates out on acidification is clearly soluble in water again.
Then the whole batch is treated with dilute mineral acid, the precipitated resin is separated off, dried or redissolved by stirring with water. Before being used as a tanning stock, schwaeh is made acidic.
