Joint device for pipes. This invention relates to a joint device for pipes.
It is known that the tight assembly of interlocking pipes connected by means of flanges and bolts, is produced by the compression of a ring made of an elastic substance such as rubber, between bearing faces which are made of on the one hand, by the circular walls of the movable flange and of the nested pipe and, on the other hand, by the plane annular walls of the movable flange and of the end of the nested.
An essential condition for obtaining a suitable seal is that the annular flat bearing faces have a sufficient width so as not to damage the elastic seal, the relative play of the various members being sufficiently small so that this seal cannot leak or leak. flow out of the compression chamber.
The device, according to the invention which aims to achieve these desiderata, comprises, in combination with the usual elastic sealing gasket, made of rubber or similar material, plastic shields forming bearing faces of this gasket by sealed bearing. , respectively on the edge of the fitting end of the pipe and on the bottom of the cavity formed in the clamping flange by replacing these elements in this function, and thus constituting, for this elastic gasket, between the flange mo bile and the pipe on which it slides, a sealing chamber, the side walls of which have sufficient support for the gasket to prevent any free leakage of the latter, in order to allow uniform compression of its entire mass and thus ensure tightness.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of this joint device applied to steel interlocking pipes. 1 is a longitudinal axial section of the pipe showing the prepared joint; lyig. 2 is a detail showing the position taken by the lining after tightening.
The pipe 1 which comprises, at its end, a part 2 of larger diameter, in which the end of the pipe 3 fits, receives a fixed flange 4, of suitable construction, bearing on the shoulder 5, and in which are engaged bolts 6 intended to pull towards the flange 4 a movable flange 7 having a chamber or cavity 8 allowing it to engage on the socket 2. This cavity is limited by a base 9 which engages , with suitable clearance, on the nested pipe 3.
There are inside) a cavity 8, respectively against the wall or bottom of the base 9 and against the edge of the socket 2, rings 10, 11 of a suitable malleable material, of suitable hardness, by example of lead, the outside diameter of which coincides with the inside diameter of the cavity 8, the inside diameter of these rings embracing exactly the nested pipe 3. Between the rings 10, 11 is formed an elastic lining 12, for example of rubber .
The three members 10, 11, 12 are entirely contained inside the cavity 8 of the flange 7, so that the tightening of the bolts such as 6 pulls the flange 7 and presses the ring 11 against the edge 13 of the socket 2. The rings 10, 11 preferably have chamfers 14, 15.
There has thus been determined outside the section 13, and independently of the clearance which separates the pipe 3 from the socket 2, a jointing chamber or cavity, the initial volume of which is liable to be reduced by traction. bolts 6 and the elastic deformation of the lining 12 until the latter has completely filled the spaces open to its deformation.
Each plastic shield, and more particularly the one placed against the fitting portion 13 of the pipe 2, is strongly applied against this portion 13, to the point of becoming integral with it, and of replacing it entirely in its function as a face. support for the seal 12.
The seal is thus obtained 1 Between the elastic and plastic seal (rubber for example) and the external surface of the male end, along a leakage surface parallel to the axis of the tubes, by the pressure exerted perpendicular to this axis, by this rubber ring clamped in its housing in the direction of the generators, and exerting, as would a real fluid, the same unitary thrust especially on the walls of the enclosure which encloses it, especially on the internal face of the plastic ring. that interposed between said seal and the interlocking game.
2 Between one of the two plastic rings and the edge 13 of the socket, in a direction of leakage perpendicular to the axis of the piping, by the fact of a sealed bearing formed by the imprint of said edge in this ring under the pressure developed by the clamping bolts.
Finally, in the event of a slight displacement of one relative. to the other, of the various parts of the assembly, the seal is maintained by the elastic tendency of the seal to resume its original shape, said seal thereby continuing to exert a thrust in the various directions concerned even when it would come to no longer strictly fill, like a perfect fluid, the enclosure in which it is enclosed.
The member blinding the gap between the minimum diameter 9 of the flange 7 and the external surface of the male end is a ring 10 made of metal or other plastic substance, but quite hard identical to that 17 which is clamped between the elastic seal 12 and the edge of the interlocking 13.
The plastic and elastic seal (rubber ring for example), has a thickness, measured parallel to the axis of the terie pipe, notably greater than the distance between the external generatrices of the male end 3 and the internal wall of the recessed flange 7 so as to exercise over a large area; in the centripetal direction, the constant unit pressure which the elastic seal receives, in the longitudinal direction, from the two end rings 10, 11 and which it transmits in a substantially equal magnitude to all the walls which contain it; this in order to increase as much as possible the adhesion by friction of the male end 3 and of this seal 12, that is to say the resistance to dislocation of the assembly produced.
The plastic and elastic seal 12, made of rubber or other substance, may be in one piece or be constituted by the superposition, in the recess of the flange, of several seals of less unitary thickness.
The internal diameter of the plastic but resistant rings 10, 11 is slightly less than the minimum tolerance diameter of the external surface of the male end, 3, so that these rings must always be fitted by forcing on said male ends, bevelled entry surfaces which can moreover be provided to facilitate their penetration by flaring, both on the male end and in the recess of the flange 7.
The internal diameter of the elastic and plastic seal 12 (rubber for example) is, apart from any tension, a little less than the external diameter, of minimum tolerance, of the male end 3, so that, according to a known principle which is combined here with a new application, this seal, after installation, is always tight on the male end 3 by its own tension.
An ancillary advantage of the device described is that the material of the elastic and plastic seal is protected over its entire surface against contact with both the atmosphere or the external environment (pipes entered) and the fluid that the pipe is called. to convey.
The invention applies to interlocking pipe assemblies, and more particularly to drawn pipes made of steel or other material.
