<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
de 1,5 à 3% au diamètre correspondant de l'emboîtement du tuyau Tl; c) un diamètre du bord libre de la lèvre interne inférieur de 10 à 15% au diamètre externe du bout du tuyau T2; d) sur les surfaces de contact des lèvres des ner- vures de section triangulairedont les sommets (4) s'ap- puient sur les tuyaux et améliorent le contact des lèvres;
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
vulcanisés directement dans l'emboîtement.
Les anneaux et joints suivant l-'Anvention présentent de nombreux avantages et notanmont loti suivante d'éliminer permet d'éliminer un seul anneau simple ou composite suffit et/les contre-brides, boulons et autres organes d'usage courant., les tuyaux arrivent ..sur le chantier d'emploi avec leur anneau en place, ce qui évite toute possibilité de détériorer ce dernier; le joint est d'une exécution facile ; l'opération d'assemblage extrêmement rapide (quelques minutes) se ré- duit à introduire le bout mâle dans l'emboîtement en em- ployant de préférence un produit qui garantit l'étanchéité (résine synthétique)et sert en même temps de lubrifiant ;
le joint ainsi constitué présente une grande élasti- cité; l'anneau n'étant pas comprimé a refus.- entre les tuyaux les mouvements des tuyaux sont facilités; le joint résiste. aux hautes pressions ; son démontage,est extrêmement rapide; le joint est d'une durée pratiquement illimitée; la suppression des accessoires : boulons, contre- brides etc.., élimine les dangers de casse ou de corrosion de ces pièces et leurs effets désastreux; l'utilisation du joint suivant l'invention n'exige pas de fûmes spéciales do la partie externe de l'emboîte- ment ; les tolérances concernant les dimensions sont plus larges que dans n'importe quel autre type de joint élas- tique; la sécurité de fonctionnement est totale : pas de serrage inégal à craindre;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The present invention relates to a new elastic seal with a V-shaped ring for rigid pipes made of cast iron, steel or other material.
This V-ring joint is applicable to pipes commonly referred to as plug and end joints.
By elastic joint, - is meant a joint which allows a certain relative inclination between two consecutive pipes occurring accidentally or deliberately,
The fact that a gasket uses a rubber or plastic sealing ring is therefore not sufficient to make the gasket "elastic" in the sense defined above.
The interlocking and plain end pipes lend themselves to the production of various types of joints known to be elastic or not. Among the former, there are quantities of seal arrangements, almost all of which use a ring
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
compressed rubber sealing between socket and: bead by means of a screwed or bolted counter flange.
All of these joints are of complicated construction ot require a series of mechanical parts.
The simplest gaskets comprising only one rubber ring, are generally of circular section; are limited by the diameter of the pipe and by its operating pressure.
The seal according to the invention eliminates all these drawbacks, and, although it has only a single sealing ring, is ready for any use and is. adaptable to any type of rigid pipes, metallic or not.
The subject of the invention is in particular an improved ring for a resilient seal intended to join two pipe elements, one of which is interlocking and the other has a male end. This ring of the typo with two lips, of radial, longitudinal section in general form of V, is characterized in that it comprises means of longitudinal stop, in the directions, against the wall of the interlocking of one of the two piping elements to be assembled,
The subject of the invention is also a pipe, the consecutive elements of which are joined by back elastic joints each comprising an improved ring as indicated above.
Some characteristics will result from the description which follows:
In the accompanying drawings, given solely by way of example: FIG. 1 is a radial longitudinal section of a

improved seal ring according to the invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are analogous variant sections; Fig. 4 shows, in a similar manner ot with its separate elements a further variant of a two-part ring .; Fig. 5 is an axial radial section of the ring after assembly of its two elements; Pigees 6 and 7 are similar cuts of gentle other variations of joints;
los Fig. 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are radial longitudinal sections of joints made according to the invention and comprising respectively back rings according to the Pigees.

According to the embodiment shown in Fig.l, the seal ring, do in longitudinal section do V comprises, in addition to the lips, outer 1 and inner 2, a bourrolot 3 disposed at the periphery of its solid part .
This bead of semicircular section is intended to be housed in a groove 13 (Pig.8) of the socket 14 of the pipe element to be joined to the male end of another
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
element T2 in order to immobilize longitudinally, in both directions, the ring relative to the element T.
This bead, the .section of which is relatively @m - load-bearing with respect to the thickness of the lips 1, 2 therefore has a certain rigidity which can be increased by the use of a frame 5 of wire mesh. or textiles.
Fig. 8 which is a radial longitudinal section of the joint after assembly shows that the external diameter 6 of the pipe Ta is barely slightly inside that 7 of

the entry of the 1 ° interlocking. This prevents any creep of the ca- outohouo even at high pressures.
The diameter 8 of 1. ' end of the inner lip 2 (fig. 1) is considerably smaller than the diameter axiom 6 of the T2 pipe (difference of 10 to 15%). There is therefore a considerable extension of this internal lip. This extension strongly applies the lip on the pipe T2 and prevents leaks of the fluid transported when the piping is at low pressure. The increase in pressure does indeed

Finally the lips, both external 1 and internal 2

are provided with small ribs.:; cironfé: rentio11os do triangular section 4. on their surface intended to come into contact with the pipe, Cos ribs ensuring a perfect seal even on a pipe surface iaparfaito comlw this is the CI: .6 for the pipes of fonto or a'ecier
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The increased pressure distributed over the lips is concentrated on the ribs ot a more perfect contact is ensured.
The angle at the top of these grooves can vary between 60 ot 90, their base is of the order of 0.5 to 2 mm.
In view of ensuring a better holding of the. joint, it may be advantageous to coat the contact surfaces with an adhesive, which does not dry out, for example synthetic resin, which allows the additional ad @ dsi @ n obtained, a relative longitudinal displacement ot / or / angular back pipes T1, T2.
The bead instead of being of semi-circular section can be of rectangular or trapezoidal section, as shown in the variant of Fig.2. According to this variant, the bead 3a is made of rubber which is harder than that of the lips 1 and 2.
These lips can be made of very elastic rubber (Shore hardness 50) while the bead 3a can be of much harder rubber vulcanized with the lips in the same operation,
The rigidity of the bead 3 (Fig.l) or 3a (Fig.2) is chosen to effectively retain the seal in place and therefore depends on the diameter of the pipe and the section chosen for the sealing ring.
Briefly, the characteristics of the rings of Fig.l and 2 are as follows: a) two V-shaped lips (1,2) integral with a bead '(3 or 3a) semi-rigid reinforced or not so as to ensure the position of the sealing ring in the socket 14; b) an external diameter of the upper external lip)
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
from 1.5 to 3% to the corresponding diameter of the pipe socket Tl; c) a diameter of the free edge of the inner lip 10 to 15% less than the outer diameter of the end of the pipe T2; d) ribs of triangular cross section on the contact surfaces of the lips, the tops (4) of which rest on the pipes and improve the contact of the lips;
e) coating the contact surfaces with a synthetic resin coating.
One can obviously give different shapes to the section of 1 ring.
Thus FIG. 3 represents a ring where the bead 3 or 3a of the rings of the pins 1 and 2 is replaced by a groove 3, the purpose of which is identical, as can be seen in FIG. 9 where the socket 14 comprises a circumferential rib 15 complementary to the groove 3b.
Figs. 4 and 5 show a gasket made up of two parts: on the one hand a soft rubber V-shaped sealing ring 16 which, like the gaskets in the preceding figures, has the following characteristics: internal diameter 8 smaller than 10 to 15 the external diameter of the male pipe; outer diameter 1.5 to 3% greater than that of the socket, triangular ribs 4 on lips 1 and 2; and, on the other hand, a support ring 3 which from all points of view replaces the bead 3 or 3a of FIGS. 1 or 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
or the groove 3 of Fig.3 and further has the advantage of pressing the outer lip 1 on 1 socket.
Fig. 5 shows the complete ring, its two parts glued to each other.
It will be noted that the alder of the bearing 3c comprises, on its lateral face intended to be engaged between the two lips and to come to bear against a flat surface 17 of the ring 16 and / or / this surface 17 of notches 18 or other clearances intended to absorb any variations in the axial length of the groove 19 (Fig.10) provided in the socket of the pipe T1 to receive the seal ring.
Fig. 10 in fact represents the composite ring of FIGS. 4 and 5 in position between the two pipes T and T to be joined.
It can be seen in this figure that any axial displacement of the ring is practically impossible.
The support ring 3c manufactured with the same excess in diameter as the sealing ring 16 strongly presses the lip 1 against the pipe Tl'ot blocks it in the groove. This ring 3c will be of the hardest possible quality of rubber.
The force of penetration from one pipe to the other is of the order of 1,000 kg. for a 600 mm diameter pipe.
Fig. 6 shows a seal of the same type, but the elongated section of which, in particular of the ring 3d, may be considered more advantageous in certain cases.
Fig. 7 shows the possibility of making the previous rings in a single piece obtained by a well-vulcanized opera. The external lips ot interna 1 ot 2 are relatively soft rubber (Shore hardness 60) whereas the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
portion 39. is hard rubber.
This arrangement has, except for things close, the mettes advantages than the preceding ones with: in addition to the simplification provided by the manufacture in one piece.
All the rings described are introduced into the sockets after having been deformed according to the diagram in FIG. 13, so as to cross the neck, the narrowest part of the socket. Released in front of its housing, the seal will resume its circular shape by compressing against the walls of the socket.
Fig. 14 shows the joint of Fig. 7 and shows the possible deviation between two consecutive pipes. It can easily reach 7 for pipes of 600 mm, 12 for pipes of 250 mm and more, for smaller diameters.
Fig. 15 shows a seal comprising a ring 20 of the type shown in Fig. 2 supplemented by an auxiliary ring 21 also in a v-shape intended to prevent infiltration into a depressed pipe when the difference between the external and internal pressures exceeds 5 kg / cm .
Until this value this auxiliary ring is useless, the rings of the Pig. 5, 6 and 7, perfectly resistant to this contro-prossion.
The rings according to the invention can be used with rigid pipes of any kind: cast iron, fiber-cement, plastics,
In the case of cylindrical pipes without interlocking, an intermediate sleeve and two flexible rings will be used.
Eventually, the seal rings can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
vulcanized directly into the socket.
The rings and gaskets according to the -Anvention have many advantages and the following notanmont loti of eliminating allows to eliminate a single simple or composite ring sufficient and / the counter-flanges, bolts and other members of common use., The pipes arrive ..on the job site with their ring in place, which prevents any possibility of damaging the latter; the joint is easy to make; the extremely rapid assembly operation (a few minutes) is reduced to inserting the male end into the socket, preferably using a product which guarantees sealing (synthetic resin) and at the same time serves as a lubricant;
the seal thus formed exhibits great elasticity; the ring not being compressed to refusal.- between the pipes the movements of the pipes are facilitated; the seal resists. at high pressures; its disassembly is extremely fast; the joint is of practically unlimited duration; the elimination of accessories: bolts, counter flanges, etc., eliminates the danger of breakage or corrosion of these parts and their disastrous effects; the use of the seal according to the invention does not require special shafts of the external part of the socket; dimensional tolerances are wider than in any other type of elastic joint; operating safety is total: no uneven tightening to be feared;
the seal is furthermore suitable for any type of pipeline or liquid transported provided
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
to choose the appropriate quality of the material constituting the sealing ring; lastly, and above all, the seal is of a low cost, the price of the sealing ring is of the order of magnitude of the price of the lead used in the seal; the savings in installation are also the result of the extremely reduced time required for making a joint.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the execution iodines shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example. This is how the radial compression of the outer lip (1) of the ring in the socket of the pipe T, obtained by giving the outer diameter of the lip in the free state a value slightly greater than that of the diameter of the log , if arranged in the socket, can be improved by giving this outer lip a sufficient thickness to prevent any tendency to waving or wrinkling in the circumferential direction which would have the effect of moving it away from the wall of this accommodation.
